I am curious how many potential customers here that SE has lost solely due to the Surplus XP system.
So many posts and threads on the matter, the results should be interesting.
Please do not vote if your reasoning to play or not play FFXIV has nothing to do with Surplus XP specifically.
Personally, it does not apply to me as I will not have that much time to play each week. So I will vote to still play. However, I can see how it might tick off people who could play more than me.

Internet polls arnt useful for anything, and i doubt SE cares whether people dont like it, its going to happen no matter what they do, if it isnt this then it will be something else for the mmorpg.comers to rage about.

Sounds like it sucks but I wasn't planning on playing in the first place. If I was going to play, this would probably change my mind.
If you think they don't have someone watching these sites for news on how people are feeling about their game, you are higher than the sky.
Now, if they actually give a shit after they read it....lol you might be right there.

Well I'm still planning on playing it. but I don't fully understand the surplus XP thing. I have heard too many different things. Like it stops the exp after 8 hours, or it stops double exp after 8 hours. I just can't figure it out.
No, because in beta the exp earned was extremely high, and the exp needed was extremely low. The leveling I got done before fatigue kicked in was insane, I was physical level 10 after about an hour, give some. I got to level 20 within three days, really not bad. Then you can still level class rank, which is fine, and you can level multiple classes to keep up with your physical level. I was able to get Puglist and Marauder near my physical level, and blacksmith to rank 10. That was real nice, the leveling is actually a little faster than I would like, from what I could tell.
The clarification post SE supplied makes surplus system just a set of bonus exp stacked on top of the base exp. Its just that, a bonus. For FF11 players this is pretty much like the exp rings. Does it change things? No. Most ppl who feel this will make/break a system are those familiar and happy with how WoW's game progression is with low and early level leveling. Do I agree with the system. Yes I do actually. I believe it can't hurt to have some grind to either get players adjusted to their jobs, learn more and perfect their skills.
Its not a "omg its takes forever" either but I think players are getting really spoiled with wanting to be able to get to hit endgame as fast as possible without learning as much or doing their jobs right. Had this crap with WoW, with FF11 and even EQ. Couldn't encounter this crap in EVE however which was really nice.
gonna have to correct you here, they want to speed to endgame so then they can complain thats theres no content to play, because they sped past it all.

Can you site a link to this, please?
The explaination I read on FFXIV Core, which they translated, indicated that it was 100% to start, and for the first 8 hours, then over the next 7 hours, it gradually decreased to Zero. That site is usually quite reliable with regard to informaiton, but I am certain a lot of people would be happy to learn otherwise in this case.

No, those boring combat videos are what killed it for me.
"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
"Surplus experience is currently not being used. However, we have received many comments suggesting some sort of reward be put into effect regarding it, and we think that’s a pretty interesting idea. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, though, and we’re currently investigating the possibilities." not the info he got this from, but this phrase right here is what suggests that there will be more to the surplus system than they currently have. Everyone stop being silly nannies, you are ridiculous.
Within the first eight hours of play, you can earn 100% experience. The seven hour period following will see your possible experience gradually approach zero.
This system is on a weekly timer. After a week has passed since you began skilling that particular weapon, the timer will reset. It will start anew when you skill up again.
I could be wrong, but I think its the quotes above that most people have a problem with. /shrug
However, the section below is pretty confusing to me:
Any experience earned past that point is saved as “surplus.” There is surplus for each class, and if you begin to see it please consider playing another class and adjust accordingly.
However, experience points are not specific to any class and therefore the decrease in experience points is not affected by changing classes.
The red and green text seem to contradict each other. I was only in Beta for a few days, so I really dodn't get a chance to see what this was all about.

I was beta testing the game. After this news hit I uninstalled it. No thanks, I will pass. I think they are doing it because a) no content or b) get more money since it will take more time. It's a joke, in my opinion. I won't be playing, ever, and I am a casual gamer that doesn't have time.
Did you play closed beta? There are two types of levels, Physical Level, and Class Level. The Physical level is the one that is constrained after 15 hours, class rank is not affected though, you can still level that. He was talking about that, they don't contradict each other.
I tend to want to progress fast in mmorpgs but even so, I don't think this is a bad idea and it will probably improve gameplay. In all honesty, most mmorpg players don't know what they want in games it seems since they change their minds rather quickly. A dev could only listen to player demands and yet they'd still hate the game. In order to take full advantage of the class system, they need this fatigue system in place. There'd be no point in trying out other classes, which is part of the reason the game is fun. The option to customize abilities is surprizingly fun imo. No matter what kind of player you are, most will be constantly looking at the exp bar in any game, but with it being limited people will slow down a bit and actually be in the world.
So the Class XP is what becomes surplus? I guess I am glad they are thinking of letting it do something for us, otherwise why bother accruing surplus anything.

Besides debating over the validity of the initial rumors it didn't effect me one way or the other about this game.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Well...I don't know how to put it..

Xp. "surplus xp" to be precise. Planned "playtime" is implied. "they" want us to play a certain amount of hours per week to get their "entertainment value" (read drugged brains looking for escape - aka "brain time") for our "value" (sub money).
This game is so wrong on so many levels... It's not like I'm bashing it or anything, I'm sure the FF lore and franchise has sooo many beautiful people working on it over it and so many fond player memories. But frankly. Wtf.
It's so... dunno. Past ages I suppose. xp? XP? Who the f**** cares about XP anymore lol? It's dead Jim. It's dead.. the xp grind treadmill is DEAD, thank god, except in Farmville (god forgive them). They're pushing the same old ANCIENT model on the shoulders of giants AGAIN. It is sad. I couldn't care less basically since I never was into FF but I can understand the pain. XP. XP!?!? Tis is the story of hamburger all over again. Commodity hell ftw.
Soz for the ramble. I'm too old and too drunk obviously to make sense anymore.
Let's keep the chat on this topic to a single thread. Thanks.
