I mean those thing are cheap as chips and it would be nice if they wanted everyone’s account to be secure rather than just people who buy CE.
I have the CE pre-ordered for myself so this really does not affect me but wanted to see what you guys think?

Not everyone wants to go through the hassle of using one, as great as they are.
It still cuts away from profit and sence this development in the millions. Im sure they need every penny.
It cost aorund 5 bucks for WoW. It must not be that cheap. Also, Why would everyone need it? Im sure most are smart enough to stay away from "those" sites and atleast understand not to download anything from emails or click on an email link.

I would certainly prefer it, even if they simply added the price onto the box. Heck I would go so far as to say make them mandatory, I would certainly prefer to remove the account stealing income to the bloody spammers. At least they would be significantly harder to bypass, not to mention it would make other services like power leveling and account buying/trading more difficult.
I think a better question would be, would our old security tokens be the ones we use or the new ones?
After all its all linked to square-enix account and thats the one time password is for.
Why do people think the only way to get hacked is through phising attempts or downloading a keylogger? Ever heard of brute force programs?
No. Every other mmo makes you buy them seperate so wht shouldn't they?
My theme song.
What other mmo uses them? Only one I know is Blizzard and you can get one for free if you have an iPhone.
Anyway A little customer care would be nice... that is all I was saying.

Then this decive wouldn't help at all. It'll just increase the time to do it. also, most programs lock you out after so many failed attempts.

E-mail accounts don't usually lock you out on secret question attempts. The device would help too, you can't brute force something that changes everyday, especially since the game probably locks you out after so many attempts. Authenicator makes it extremely difficult for any hacker to permentantly take over your account.
Ok so SE can give us a security app for our phones. But WoW does make you pay for the same security token that SE uses.
My theme song.
99% of all game accounts hacking is from someone sharing his password with someone he shouldnt have.
99% of all statistics are made up.

I just saw the CE as a more convenient way of obtaining it, along with some other decent bonus swag. However if they provided it with every account I probably wouldn't have bothered with the CE.
As it stands though you will be able to buy them directly from SE.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Wait, I get an authenticator with me CE edition??? Hmm, imagine that, musta missed that part.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)

im all about the swag, you know you want that onion helmet. everyone knows how impossible good helmets are to get till like half way through leveling in all mmos hehe.
Me to Square Enix: "You give good helmet!"
All you young whipper snappers out there won't understand the reference I'm eluding to.
Brute forcing doesn't work on any MMO that wasn't designed in the stone ages. Do you really think that developers are dumb enough these days to allow people to attempt to log in using random passwords indefinitely? Most force you to wait for 20 or so minutes after a certain number of failed attempts.
If people weren't dumb enough to make their password easy to guess or access, hacking would be a non issue. I can't see why I would possibly need this authenticator program since there is no way a "hacker" could possibly gain access to my account.
You have to remember that it looks like we'll have to be constantly looking shit up on the internet like crafting recipe's and quest info again, since SE's failed to incorporate these things into the game again. This is where the majority of the keyoggers come into play. I wonder how many peopele were logged just by visiting sites like Somepage and FFXIAH a few years back. Granted that could be prevented by using Firefox, but it should be something we shouldn't have to worry about.
It sounds like an optional thing since it would rise the retailer price of the game. But I think they should make them available at the stores.
I can easily afford one myself but some people have really tight budgets and the rest of us have to respect that.
"No way" is a pretty high standard, one that no game company can meet. Hell, governments can't even meet the "no way anyone could hack my account" standard. Databases go missing or get stolen, companys fuck up and send out passwords in clear-text (Even mf'ing Kaspersky labs does this. Frequently.) And, lots of people use the same password for most of their web accounts and don't change them for years (not sayin you do this, ofc)
Its a good idea to assume, however, that somewhere along the line you WILL do something that compromises a password or two. We all like to think of ourselves as experienced enough to know how to protect ourselves, and it's a point of pride to think you'll never do something dumb. But the upside of being vain is zero. The downside is identity theft. As a value proposition, assume you'll occasionally have a brainfade.
OTOH I suspect that people who are (for lack of a better way of putting it) SMART enough to want one are also smart enough to not need one.

Read my other post. Someone can easily brute force your e-mail account (Battle-net e-mails were linked quickly) if you use a free e-mail service through the secret question which usually isn't a full on password itself. It's a nasty security hole people don't realize. Your e-mail is much harder to protect than your MMO account, and once they have your e-mail account if your MMO account is the same name as your e-mail account's they are just a "request" password away from getting your MMO accounts, better hope you don't have the same secret question and answer to that account.
I've been hacked through this method before, not phising and a keylogger (used the leaked B-net e-mails to get my e-mail account name, then brute forced my secret answer and changed it on an e-mail account that was inactive for 2 years). Nowadays I keep my e-mail and MMO accounts seperate and use a password for my secret answers rather than the actual answer, but still an authenticator would make you virtually hack proof.
The internet is a crazy place anymore. Just really have to be smart, keep your security software updated and use it and still bad things happen. I am a firm believer in the authenticator too. I got one for my FFXI account long ago and have the iPhone app for my WoW account. Which brings me to your question, No, I don't think SE should have shipped one with every boxed game package. If you don't have one, it's a good perk reason to order the CE version (other than the Onion Helm he he) but for many many of us, we don't need another and don't want to pay for another. Even though inexpensive, they still bump up the cost.
SE offering it in the CE is really a nice touch though. It and the advance entry into game are not bad marketing ideas to boost pre sales either.
Yeah I bought CE, I fell for the marketing ploy of SE. :P But honestly, I do agree with this, it's one of the perks that comes with paying 30 dollars more. And 30 dollars...that's a lot of money for just an onion helm and some books.
