We've seen it happen all over the gaming world, extra content becomes available for more and more games..... In console speech its named DLC and downloadable for a small ammount of money........
In my P2P MMO's these content patches they come for free and good games add some new content every month.
Personall i wouldn't mind Arenanet joining the first trail, if that would give us more new content to play (or even choose from) as long as they don't become a must have. additional content could come in :
- New area's
- New dungeon's
- New story packs, like your personal story
I don't mind paying a few dollars for extra content, you can't expect Anet to add as much free content then a P2P game. But max level players will be begging for new content when they reach max level.
Mind, that i am talking content patches and not fix patches....
So whats your opinion, would you pay for DLC if that way there would come more content after release on a very regular base?

DLC is just a fancy way of saying 'Expansions'. So I don't know why anyone who likes GW2 wouldn't buy coming expansion, besides ofcourse the financial reasons. I would buy them in any case, I bought all the GW expansions as well and never regretted it.
They don't charge a sub, so yeah, it would make sense to have to give them some money, somehwere down the line, for the work they do on extra content...anyone who wants them to expand the game for free needs to put down the crack pipe.
DLC should come in a form that they are not essential for the in-game experience. For instance; GW1 Mission packs where you get to play out some of the old lore stories like the defeat of Palawa Joko and the rise of the white mantle which were all instanced areas seperate from and not essential to the game's main story. In the case of GW2, I think a playable form of the story of Dougal Keane infiltrating Ascalon would be cool.
This is not a game.
DLC is a scaled down version of expansion
For DLC, I would pay extra for the chance to play as a Tengu. It even fits the world lore, there were highly intelligent Tengu in Cantha, even a henchman. There were also lots of tengu in the tyrian continent.
i think that should be left for an expansion. it adds too much that people would litterally have to get their hands on to understand how to proporly fight.

Only new area's dungeons and quests/storylines should be downloadable. Classes races and other features that change gameplay should either be free or belong in an expansion pack.

Keep the "DLC" for consoles and shithouses like Cryptic.
Paying for a FULL expansion is fine, just like in GW1. Paying for scraps and pieces of content isn't.
Unless GW2 becomes a true F2P game and not a B2P game, then they can itemshop all the content they want.
Just my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.-
-And on the 8th day, man created God.-
well there could be things like the bonus missions from GW1. they could call them "the loast missions"
I don't mind DLC in general, depending on its nature. I think there can be a fine line between paying for expected content and true DLC.
The way I want to see it is:
If an area recieves an update, anyone who has access to that are is allowed to use the content. I don't want some dungeon in the middle of Lion's Arch only accessable to someone who has purchased the DLC for it.
DLC should be designed as non-essential/extra. The BMP is a perfect example. It should also be designed to tell a different story if it does, not continue the current one (I disliked the DLC for Assassin's Creed 2 for that reason, they left a fairly large chunk out of the story for DLC)
Expansions can be used to continue the story and provide large ammounts of new content. But certain updates should also be made retroactively upon the base and previose expansions. I don't want anything like what happened to prophecies drops to happen again by not implimenting the inscription system.
Don't add levels! Levels do not equal content. If you must progress the gear don't make the previose area's entirely obsolete compared to more common drops.
These are all things I feel DLC and expansions should be like. I've been irked, angry, and a little depressed by some things in the past that really turns me off to the hole idea.
Disagreement Heirarchy
I would really love some DLC to explain what happened to all of the heroes from GW, and a few of the henchmen. I grew a little attatched to a few of them. The Annals of the Heroes, Grimoire of the Heroes, The Shadows of Heroes. Brainstorming naming ideas...
I think these are stories worth telling, and there is enough people who played GW who would love to know what happened to them. I know I would at least, and a few other people.
Disagreement Heirarchy
I hope they just give free updates and then release expansions. It's more exciting that way in my opinion to see a new box saying Guild Wars 2: [expansion] ect... so that's my preference.
I don't think DLC for GW2 will be necessary for that since we are already getting GW: beyond content in the first game.
Another idea might be for a long-form video that details what they've already said in the "Movement of the World" blog entry. I would love to see the awakening of the dragons, the unification of Cantha, the flood of Lions Arch, and the building of Divinity's Reach in their hybrid-style cinematic.
And I don't really see the issue with adding a new race via a paid DLC... one way or another, people who paid for the expansion/dlc will have the new race and others who didn't pay will not. The only difference would be be that the expansion should have more playable content.
Yep, it has been "patch" or "content patch" for 20 years, nowadays even bugfixes seem to be "DLCs"...
Btw the approach the OP is suggesting is more like Turbine's one (micro-pay-per-micro-content) rather than the usual b2p + big expansions (the usual ANet approach)...
Actually Arenanet have added a ton of "DLC' for free. They only charge for the full game expansion.
Some are rewards for players with all campaigns and some are just for everyone.
Some of the free stuff
Sorrows Furnace and Deldrimor War Camp
Bonus Mission Packs (Was free to people that pre-ordered Nightfall from the NcSoft site)
Zaishen Menagerie
Codex Arena
The Underworld and Fissure of Woe (To be honest I seriously can't remember if this was here on release)
Mox Hero quest chains
Nicholas the Traveller (Pre-Searing)
Nicholas the Traveller (Post Searing)
Zaishen Missions and Chest
Renewed Hell's Precepice Mission with new end game rewards
Multiple Events each with unique activities (Most people would consider these part of the game but they were not there on release. They are all actually free updates).
Free Xunlai storage pane
Guild Wars Beyond
War in Kryta
More to come on this one
I am almost certain I have missed some but I think I made my point
Expansions you had to buy to play
Prophecies
Factions
Nightfall
Eye of the North
If Arenanet keep the same model which they stated they are I don't think it unreasonable to expect more of the same.
Also as a side note I believe that in the last five years that Guild Wars has had a total of 24hours or thereabouts downtime. Most of which was a few weeks ago when they migrated to a new datacenter. Thats extrordinary by any standards. They can do this because the servers update live made easier by instancing and they have also said they are aiming to do the same for Guild Wars 2.
Lol, "DLC".
Reminds me of when people first starting using terms like "synergies", "networking" and "interfacing" to describe simplier things like just talking to one another or combining something.
"TO MICHAEL!"
I still can't understand why people who pay monthly fees look at updates as "free." Nothing is free, that "free" breakfast you just ate at [big hotel] was factored into the price of your room. NOTHING IS FREE if you are already paying.
so many noobs around here lately who just spout shit and generalize, go read a book on the subject first.
GW1 has 2 expansion and 2 games, why would anything be different, they are in the business of many money off of games.
Nice listing..
But rather small for an MMO that released 5 years ago..
I hope that GW2 gets much much more additional content patches (or DLC) even if we need to pay for them......

I don't mind paying for them, in fact I prefer them over an item mall (paying to skip mechanics, change them, or get ripped off for a single equipment or pet skin) or a monthly subscription, as long as it is properly priced.
A full scale expansion costing $40 is fine, a single new area with dynamic events isn't.
I would love it, I was ready to pay for 2 campaigns per year as they originally proposed with GW1, it would be cheaper than a monthly subscription and it could mean more content being pumped.
I hope ANet focus on this as the revenue model instead of selling shiny stuff or unlocks, too much content is never a bad thing, it actually means you won't get out of things to do. Except if it breaks PvP balance.
Remember this is a real MMO, it's not a single-player game with multiplayer trying to make a monthly fee out of DLCs, it's going to need money to keep a development team active working on it, and as I mentioned, this would be the way I'd prefer to fund it.
it is alot for free though.
I dont give anyone money for crap,if GW2s expansion is crap i won't pay for it and they can go to hell. If the expansion is good then i will pay for it and play a really goood game.
HAVE? no thanks.
they will most likely go with purchasable expansions. Not like in gw1 when we had factions and nightfall as a stand-alone clinets (which were connected in one or played separately), but like eye of the north which has been a pure expansion (it required any other client - proh, fact or nightfall..).

Hmmm actually I would say that they are copying the first GW content plan. They release an expansion every 6 months - 1year until complete and then they build another bridge to GW3.
There are 5 dragons in GW2.
We know that Jormag holds the northern shiverpeaks near Gunnars Hold
Zhaitan controls Orr at Arah
Kralkatorrick controls the crystal desert near the Tombs of the Primeval Kings
Primordus controls the depths of Tyria but that could mean anywhere
The Deep Sea Dragon is unknown
GW2 is currently about Zhaitan but there will be spoilers for the other dragons. It would be reasonable to say that each dragon will get its own expansion. So there is a minimum of 4 to come.
We haven't even touched on the other 2 known continents of Cantha and Elona. They have bothered to update the movement of the worlld story to encompass the plotlines into the futiure of these continents. Also the next Guild Wars Beyond content is going to be on resolving the Kieren Thackery story as well as an introduction to the future events in Cantha. They have also said that there will be a Guild Wars Beyond content update in Elona.
There is another 2 expansions worth here too. Or perhaps these could be a GW3 thing.
Plus there is a fourth continent that was to be the setting for Utopia but was abandoned in favour of Eye of the North. It could still be used but is very unlikely.
with the amount of content their unloading in just the game alone, I think I'll be fine waiting for the next campagn. though they might release it in DLC form instead of making a box you never know. But I would prefer content in the ways they did it in guild wars 1. besides, with W v W and pvp we'll prob be set for quite a while even if we become tired of pve (which I finf unlikely, the demo at pax ruled! o: )
Anything that doesn't give the other player an edge is good in my book.
Things like skins, spell effects, cool armor/weapon models, etc etc.
