Just thinking out loud

I know many of us have played the betas.   My question is, do you believe this game is truly innovative and unique compared too all the other "clones" out there at the moment?  Does anyone feel it is truly a FFXI clone just made to look better?   I'm excited about a new world to explore even if it IS like FFXI.   Just would like people's opinions.

There are swords , bows, lances , wands ..

There are Mage , Gladiator , Crafting skill ...

There are monsters , there are towns , cities ...

Pretty much make it a clone ... or pretty much every MMORPGs are clones of each others ... nothing is original ... if you truly want an original game you may have to come to a totally different world than the world we live in ...

All I can say is FFXIV is an improved version of those clones , not so innovative but kind of different

The more things change the more they stay the same, eh?    I'm actually not too worried about it being "totally different" compared to what we have.    More or less and IMPROVEMENT on what I like in a game.    Thanks for the response.

ff14 is a successor to ff11, both are JRPG, neither one can be accused of being remotely similar to wow.

Completely innovative? No. At it's core it's still an mmo about leveling up, exploring, questing, and such things. These are things rarely, if ever changed in gaming.

But it is different, or a change of pace. It's obviously changed many aspects of an mmo, for example the class system, combat, retainer system, and so on.

It has it's similarities with XI, but not enough that I would consider it a clone of it.

It is an MMO, therefor it still exists within the plane of the genre. MMOs are evolutionary, not revolutionary, I view the selective group of MMO developers like this,  very few are going to be brazen enough to come out with something COMPLETELY different because that would involve taking a chance. FFXIV is in all senses an MMO, but I would definitely say it strives to be something beyond what is available in the current market. It has an intuitive design that requires a learning curve for certain, but it's not so drastically different that you have to re-learn how to walk. In no sense would I call this a clone, not even of FFXI. My experience in Beta 3 was that SE wanted to bring the familiar, and chance it up completely to make it something new.  I actually found myself learning new things, and never once did I say, "I've played something like this before." Because I haven't really, the art style is unique, the combat is unique, the class system is unique, the crafting system is far superior to any crafting I've seen before, unfortunately the leveling system is also unique....and some see it is a downside. I personally like the surplus/fatigue system, I think it adds an interesting new dynamic. This game is really different yet still manages to be an MMO in every way.

Ever have a dream at night where things looked/felt/seemed familiar but they had enough of a twist on it to make you confused and go "Huh.. that's weird/neat/strange"? That's kind of the feel you get from FFXIV.

There was an area in beta that I hit with all these little bridges that crossed to a myriad of smaller islands. The vista was that you were very high up and near the ocean and I could clearly see somethings weren't in place there. (maybe some warp zones). Plenty of bird type mobs there (fire crystals!) and some other apaluks or penguins.

There were also areas I hit where there were what looked like airship pads out in the middle of fields that you could be taking from land to land. They didn't have any activity or npcs around, but you could see it was some kind of staging point. Both of these areas and more were VERY different and in some cases, areas looked as if they had taken parts of one zone from FFXI and mixed it with parts of another.

The way they did it was not at all stale and gave a feeling of being in a totally renovated building where they knocked down walls and gutted things while adding others. Quite refreshing actually being lost a bit, but sort of feeling you know the way.

The feel you get is not clone at all and the guildleve system is not wholly unique, but it's different enough of spin for FF fans to have to adjust to.

The groundbreaking innovative in MMOs simply isn't done much anymore. Most ideas have been pretty stretched out and changed up already only to rehash in some new form. The best/only thing FFXIV has going from it that makes it stand out from all those other "clones" as you say, is that it's a PvE based game. Everyone and their mom is making a PvPvE game nowadays and for the next couple years.

As many ppl has already said, alot of things you find it only @ FFXIV :)

    * Surplus system unique : No more grind. Even if you want, you can't

    * Class system unique : Where you create a unique class, the way you want it be, and with skills you want
