They walked the walk WHILE chewing gum.

    Thumbs up from me Anet.

  • randomtrandomt Member UncommonPosts: 1,220

It was a demo showing what they wanted to show.. We'll see, once the thing actually comes out and people see how it is at that point.

As for people having played it.. we'll see how it holds up with a real population base in a live server setting heh.

My verdict:  Still wait and see.

The Gamescom footage was very revealing, especially the 50 minute uncut Hunter video. The game looks like it's standing on some solid legs, and has good footing. With the level of polish that was shown in the demos I am very much looking forward to GW2. Compared to some of the footage I have seen of SWTOR and Rifts, GW2 is light years ahead of the competition.

If ANet keeps this up, I will be playing on launch day.

But let's back away from the "everyone's too defensive" bull**** first.  Criticism of the game at this point is GOOD.  I can't think of a better time to criticize it than when most of it's fundamental systems are still being polished.   But just Saying "I watched the footage" and leaving it there isn't enough.  You need some kind of detail to point to in order to substantiate your overreaching judgment.  Example:  I personally hate the inefficacy of the Ranger Traps & the 720s recharge on Elite skills.  This is called articulating.   People who say your opinion is invalid b/c you fail to articulate are expressing not an opinion but a Mathematical Theorem.  In other words you arrive at Conclusion "F" by only stringing Sentence "A" together with sentence "B".  In laymen's term:  "I don't like it" only leads to more questions... for instance "why don't you like it?"   ...if your reflex is then to get defensive, then you just lost ...or worse... revealed your real motive:  trolling.

trolling response Example:  if I concluded this message with:  "Have fun playing WoW"

What I generally dislike about, I would say a good 90% or so on this site, it that people just can't seem to take the fact that some things just don't interest other people. Thats a personally choice, nothing much more then that.

Take me for instance, TERA, RIFT, and DCUO hold nothing on me, I just don't like them. No reason when it comes to game style and what not I just have no interest in the things like IP and Developer.

I don't care about innovation I care about fun.

  • illeriller Member UncommonPosts: 518

Yeah that's good reasoning too.  Saying you just don't like the genre or demographic is something I can get behind.  I'll never play anything finalfantasy or starwars related. (however I'd also never go to their forums and rub that in their faces either).

I think what drives some people to be defensive though and then mistakenly labeled "fanboys" is this closed-minded "It sucks, It'll fail, I'm not even going to try it" insurgency.  If this was just another copy-pasta MMO, that would be justified.  But with something this new, there's just no way to prove that judgment credible without having already played & listing every game that has a mechanic & class even remotely similar to this new game.  ...the old addage:  "well how do you know you'll hate it if you never try it?".

I don't like that the hype level keeps going up. LOL image

Seriously, I dread seeing that number go up up up.. LOL I was mad when it was 8.22.. now LOOK at this..  I have been following this game for years, I Have confidence in Arena Net to really pull this off. When they asked me to fill out a survey years ago, and then they actually included most of that in the game.. I was excited to see what they would do with it.. But I didn;t want anyone else to know what they were doing.. because with hype comes an insane flow of spammers in chat.. Kinda like to find good games that not many people know about for that reason- but NOO everyone had to get in on this.. Anet couldn;t keep it quiet.. and the numbers just keep rising. LOL My sister was making fun of me because I was complaining last week about it. It is like every day now- who is doing this? MAke it stop!! LOL

Of course they are walking the walk- this is Arena Net we are talking about. Ya know the guys who left Blizzard over the way they treated players. The guys who wanted to give players what they wanted and had the tools to do it. I love these guys- they are all that and a bag of chips. image

I`m really happy about everything I`ve heard so far. Dynamic content sounds like a breath of fresh air. Arena Net is getting flack from a lot of people who like traditional MMO mechanics and I pray to the digital gods that they ignore those people and stay the course with what they know is right. I think it`s brilliant, and we have already seen thousands of identical MMO`s. We don`t need another one. It blows my mind how static the mmo market has been for over a decade. I`ll enjoy this game for years just as I am still enjoying Guild Wars 1 and all of it`s expansions today. I have no regrets about purchasing any of them.

This site is kinda over reacting. Well not kinda it is. Its post like this that make me wanna bash my head up against a wall.

I believe the hype of a game/movie/any type of media is better estimated by the number of people interested in said product. For example, The hype for WoW:Cata is higher then that of GW2. It is more popular and it is more well known.  Keep in mind that the numbers GW2 is displaying is out of about 1.4kish vote, as opposed to say, (WARNING FLAME BAIT) ToR that is based off twice that.

My question to you is not whether or not GW2 "Walked the Walk", but maybe just maybe you may be inflating this to something that its not(In terms of people hyped for this game and in terms of the MMO gaming commuinity)?

I don't care about innovation I care about fun.

It is true that GW2 is the most hyped game here. It is also true that Cata might get more players and Tor might too, we really don't know this yet but I don't see GW2 sell worse than the first GW (just under 7 million copies but that includes that some people bought 4 boxes to get all expansions while other bought a pack or just a single game).

Both Cata and Tor are aimed on regular mainstream players, the type that love Wow. GW2 is more aimed to the other type of players like MMO veterans and people who want something a little tougher all the time instead of just in the endgame. This site is full of MMO veterans and they see something different made by someone that is actually competent, that is why the hype is for this game.

I think many players who havn't done their research won't like the game, there are no raids, you just can't fill your quest journal to the max and do a whole bunch at the time, when someone asks you to save them from a bunch of bandits you do it fast or the bandits will kill the npc ending the quest and maybe messing up part of the world.

But for the MMO player that are getting tired of the same old it is hopefully a blessing, I have been playing the same old game since Meridian 59, very little has changed besides graphics.

Not in many long years have an experienced dev tried to change the MMO genre and even if the game actually fail it will add a lot of new features to the genre. TOR and Cata will add very little that hasn't already been done 'cept adding the Neverwinter nights/Dragon age dialog and a lot more cut scenes. And that is why GW2 is more interesting even if Tor and Cata will get more players.

Why would that make you want to bash your head? Don't you think that is a bit emo over a game? LOL Why do you even care?

When I played Guild wars 1 the first time, I gave it a bad review.. next thing I know ANet sends me a survery about what I like dislike in a game- so I fill it out, and I thought that was pretty cool for them to check up on players like that to see what is goin on. So I give guild wars another chance, then I realized I really loved it's PVP. I am an fps pvp kind of girl, I really have no interest in NPCs or AI in a game- but that is just me. Back when I started guild wars, I wanted full loot pvp anything goes massive scale combat and really wasn;t ready to give anything else a chance- My oldschool ways were burnt in. Then I played it for what it was and realized I was having fun- I really enjoyed the interrupts and the player skill it focused on rather than levels.

I tried out multiple classes and realized any class could be played well, and was impressed. I was even more impressed when I found out they were putting all that crap from the surveys in their next game- yea That is impressive, considering most devs these days really don;t care about veering from the cookie cutter molds. I commend them on that, they deserve the respect they have earned through their treatment of players. They made me come back because of the actions they took. I would have never given them another look, but they gave me something to look at.

Then i found out more about them, why they left Blizzard, these guys created Battlenet, they helped make Blizzard what they are today, and they disagreed with a games focus being on easy money, but rather on what the players have to say. They stepped outside the box  and put players first. How could I not love them for this? They ROCK! Not only did these guys have no monthly fee- they gave out video cards, ipods, and computers.. FREE STUFF PL0x! LOL

I am serious about that hype meter though- that needs to stop. Yes it really does bother me. Yes, I have really complained. I was ranting about it earlier this evening as well.. Someone is out to bring the spammers to the game. AHHH!!image

Why does hype and, consequently, a hype meter matter so much to people? Really, it's not that big of a deal. Either the game is good or it's not. Either you enjoy the game or you don't. That is all that should matter. What other people think of it or what kind of hype it gets shouldn't matter to you in the least.

The walked the walk just fine and the frightening thing is that they have not shown us pvp yet. The original game had one of the best pvp and I don't see them failing at this at all.

Devilicious, I get what you are saying. When I started following the game it was mostly the GW crowd. I loved that. It was a game for us, with every complaint we had about the first one fixed and in a persistant world. We loved the promises and the idea that it was ours. Now Its getting a ton of mainstream attention and that is a bit... unnerving for me. Do I really want all these people who think games are about Phat lewtz in game? Do I want these people who feel entitled because they spend more time? Do I  want the griefers and the trolls to wander up and start staring at the female char models and saying Will strip for goldz!!!111

I suppose it is a good thing others are interested as well though, maybe we will see a definite change in the market after this instead of the same old ideas pounded in different ways.

Yes, they walked the walk, and they walked it damned good.

yea, it is great for Arena Net and all - they deserve it. But it kinda worries me it will be "stolen" from us. LOL

I guess that is what they get for listening to players.. now we want to take it and hide it from them so they can't bring their pixel fondling ways into " our" world. ROFL! image

And in the end it's just a game. It's not the prophet of the New Aeon.

GW2 might be good, tho I must say most people I know are very skeptical based in GW1. GW1, at least here in Germany, had the MOST TERRIBLE community EVER. All trash, porn, aggro talk like you were cast in the most uneducated, aggressive and childish group of people you can imagine. I say it clear: everyone I talked to about GW2, said OMG no, GW had such a horrible community, I can hardly imagine to play GW2. It was the only western F2P MMO at the time, and so it gathered all the freeloaders of the world. I too found the community of GW1 absymal. That is my personal biggest skepticism.

I played GW2 at Gamescon, it looked great, esp. the combat system. But still, it is "just a game". Nothing I noted made it justify seeing it as "the big breakthrough", but of course I had only seen a small portion. So I guess we have to see. I still think Rift is a bit more innovative than GW2, tbh, but again, I know only so much about each title, and being a big Star Wars nerd, of course TOR holds yet greater a interest for me.

all the right to you.  and GW's community has always been a mixed bag, but from germany aparently. it seems that when a few bad movied in everyone who could have made it good fled.  part of community problems is the fact that  the community as a whole lets it happen. such as how your community just kind of said "im not even going to touch that."

HELL YEAH, they walked the walk.

Also, MMORPG, how about SENDING someone to Germany next year instead of pressing your noses to the glass? It's not that far. There are things called "direct flights", you know. We come here for information, not second hand guesswork.

    Wow, you really hate when people think something has better hype than your favourite game(s?). Let me give you a small lo'down;

ToR was rated by 3k people and the fact that it is not higher than GW2 (rated by 1.4k people) means most of the people who hyped ToR, hyped it....wait for it... DOWN and what does that say about GW2? Most people who hyped it, hyped it...wait for it... UP.

We can only really compare hype when the amount of people are the same, but for now that's the conclusion I derived.

    This is not a game.

I have yet to see anything beyond combat.   Thats one step.  String that together with the rest of the steps that make a good mmorpg and i'll say they walked the walk.
