The fact that you cant use left+right mouse keys to move is not normal.
It's normal if you followed the beta a bit. All the controls were made with gamepads in mind.
You notice if you push up in FFXIV that you actually don't go forward but just go up on your screen? If you push back you don't run backwards but you go down on your screen. That's how gamepads move characters.
Gamepads don't have click to move so they didn't map it.
Holding down right mouse button + running does move you in any direction. Why? Because it's a map from the gamepad D-pad.
They mapped they keys from the controller to the keyboard. Which is why the controls seem to so alien if you're a PC user (as I am) and not used to gamepads.
I was reading this from some random link to this site (I could care less).
I got so frustrated that no one knew this that I registered to post this.
You can map in the game in the menu option.
BUT, the keys that are already mapped need to be unmapped first to be used.
Anyway.
For the topic at hand. Yes the controls with mouse and keyboard are terrible, this is something which will kill the game from the get go I believe. It's super laggy and clunky because they used console controls and the mouse is not hardware mapped. A hardware mapped mouse is independent from lag, every game has a hardware mapped mouse, except FFXIV apparently. Newbee mistake that will cost them dearly.
Well that would explain why I had no success with remapping. Is it just me or does the UI and contorls remind you of something out of the 90's?
It does. It's even worse than what good software did in the 90s actually.
Plus I'm working on FFXIV Guides currently, that which I have several posted already, but I've yet to get the in-game config complete due to worlds down for maintence atm!
Morning Khrymson, where are you posting guides? Checked MMORPG profile but didn't see them. I would be interested in reading them.
Thank you,
They are on our Linkshell Forums, near the top in the FFXIV Guides Section, its for public use too!

I was responding to the OP that said he had played many other mmo's and found FF14 normal. Sorry for not quoting him in my post. My point is that FF14 is not normal for the genre as it does not allow movement using just the mouse. And yes it does matter.

I wasnt in any of the previous betas, but keyboard + mouse movement is exactly like any other mmo in open beta!
I assume this is a recent change, as it seems completely normal to me.

Oh, I agree that it matters. I think the controls in FFXIV are absolute garbage for a PC game. The character doesn't even move back but jerks around like a controller character, which is why it's completely alien to any PC player I talk to.
I just meant, "it's normal if you knew how they implemented the controls". From what I understand they started with gamepads controls and then mapped those to a keyboard.

Its mostly normal :P I did notice that after I made my post.
I didnt realize that most people claiming mouse + keyboard to be unplayable were talking about mouse lag. I thought that the controls were going to actually be "different".

And that is where they fail. That is the most absurd method ive ever heard of. If your going to launch a pc game, you configure the controls for pc users, not for console users. I know they are planning a ps3 release but so was aoc for 360 and that was total fail. If its a pc launch, it should be intuitive to pc users. When or if they decide to go with the ps3 launch, then at THAT time they should worry about console configured controls.
Whoever thinks FF 14 movements controls are abnormal hasn't played many mmos. The only thing abnormal about it is that the keyboard keys for rotating the camera are IJKL , but most people will probably use the mouse anyway. I think the main feeling of strangeness may originate from the fact that the camera doesnt rotate with your character, its always manual, but the actual controls are pretty standard (The UI is pretty completely non-standard though).

I run the game at 1680 x 1050. Will have to try both ways with AA and without and see how performance is.
