As a fisherman

Can you only fish if you pick a fisherman as your class? :S

I see this more of a proffession than a class.

I fought mobs by throwing a rock and dealing 1 damage... is this for real? o_O

Throw a fish and you deal more damage. Plus if you use fish, you also have increased crit chance.

Any gatherer or crafter or melee or mage is a class.  They all advance seperately and rank up.  Gatherers and crafters have Throw Stone as their attack.  You have to be a fisherman to fish, but you simply change your equipment to a lance/sword and voila you are now a lancer/gladiator.

It is advised that you fight with a combat weapon, and fish with a fishing pole.

Yea pretty much... Fish and throw rocks at the mobs... DoW and DoM Classes are the only one that can attack with anything other the rock throw

Technically all of the "classes" are called professions

Yeah classes are defined by weapon type.  Just go into passive mode and equip any weapon type and you will be that class.  This goes for harvesting as well.

A good way to start the game is pick any class and follow the main story line, or pick up your first set of leves.  The main story line will reward you with 2k gil after a few quests, and the leves will give you 600-1k.  Then each starting weapon/harvesting tool/crafting tool is roughly 140 gil.  Then you can grab another weapon and work on that a bit.  The market npc's should sell the first rank (140 gil) of every weapon/harvest/craft type.  You have to go to another shop for a shield.
