I'm posting most of these on behalf of someone else as I also don't know the answers. It's just a few things that we were wondering.
1. I started as a Thaumaturge and once I got to around rank 6, I tried out conjurer for 5 minutes. When I changed back, I decided to keep the Conjurer spell of Fire for use on my Thaumaturge. This spell continued to do over 200 damage even after I'd changed my class to Thaumaturge, whereas my Thaumaturge offensive spells such as Banish only do around 100. This seemed really weird that an outside ability is so much more effective than one of the class that I'm using. Is there a reason for this? It made me feel like my chosen class was worthless. I tried casting it on different things to make sure it wasn't just a resistance difference.
2. Is there a way to move the position of the map? It was really annoying that I was in Ul'dur but couldn't move the map position down to see the bottom end of the city without having to actually run there first.
3. I wandered in to the Gladiators guild and got unwillingly pulled in to an event and ended up having to fight one of them in an arena on a 5 min timer. I got his health down to 0 but he didn't die and just kept attacking me. When the timer finally reached 0, I got told that I lost. That was really annoying. What was the point in this? And how can I fight in the arena and earn gil like they were talking about? There's so many intractable characters with useless information that it makes it hard to find the ones that are actually useful.
4. Would I end up gimping myself if I just put every single skill point that I have in to Intelligence? I'm not interested in trying out any melee classes at the moment.
5. How necessary is it to have access to the guild of a class that you want to level? I've started botany but the guild is in a different city. I got a couple of leves from the adventures place, but am I missing out on more by not having access to the guild?
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

1) The skills you get from each class serve their purpose. Thaumaturge is a buffer mainly, so their attacks do not do much damage, while the conjurer does focus on damage.
2)Don't know how to move the map around yet.
3) This game doesn't hold hands and tells you what character will do what. Just read what everyone has to say and learn the lore. You will find the useful information as you talk to all the NPCs, and on top of that, their dialog changes as you level up as well. So what at one point might have been a "useless" character, might eventually be very beneficial to you.
4) Put the skills anyway you want. Remember, you have a "reassign" button that you can use once every.... so often, to reset your skills. I think its once every half hour. This is so that you can have a gladiator, or a thaumaturge, and not be gimped by the skill points of one class over the other.
5) its very good to have access to the guild you want to level up, because they will sell you some really good abilities and skills you can't get any other way, and you can only get these things with Guild Rank Points. 5000 a skill is ussually the price.
