I think people who are putting their eggs in the "it's more solo friendly" basket are going to be sad about their loss of eggs.
The "solo" content is Guildleves, which are restricted to X number per X days. Square had the cahones to say "well, you should do your solo leves with a group. Do one person's and then the next. Then do the group leves."
Um. No thanks.
I found soloing in this game MUCH harder than in FFXI, even with the "improved" controls in FFXIV (which they still won't let you re-map, by the way). Once you're done with leve's you're SOL unless you want to join a group or grind on solo mobs for hours and hours (while competing with others to grind on them). There aren't nearly enough of them to go around.
There is a severe lack of direction and explanation of anything in the game, making the experience that much more frustrating.
I guess some people like the pain.. I'll wait for something better.
Sorry fanbois. I'm thinking the majority of people who didnt like FFXI, won't like this game either. I've been trying really hard to make myself like this game but the PC UI is stupid, the fighting is incredibly slow, I never liked the idea of being able to be any class with FFXI, and I don't like it with this game either. Yes its great because you don't have to re-roll, but I like more defined class roles, and feeling like I stand out. Levequests seem so far to be go kill x number of x mob then insta port back to the levequest crystal and do the next one until youre done. Thats as far as I've gotten, not quite sure what to do after I've finished the battle levequests, I don't craft, I hardly ever craft in any MMOs, I let other people do that. This game definitely doesn't appeal to the masses. Everquest and Everquest 2 were my main MMOs growing up, since 99, and I've played most every other MMO at some point during the last 11-12 years. This game makes me want to fall asleep. It's rare that I take on a brand new game and find myself wanting to play something else after about 4-5 hours. Square Enix should stick to single player games, I'm afraid they don't have much talent when it comes to the MMO space.
At best this beta was a nice benchmark for my new PC parts! My EVGA 470 looks great with graphics maxed out on 1900x1080. Unfortunately I will not be pre-ordering the game now. I'll check back in a few months to see what the progress of the game is, and what people are saying about mid to end game content. Maybe it gets more fun then. But I've never been more bored in my life in the lower levels of an MMO, especially a brand spankin new one with such great graphics, cut scenes, and music.
I tryed this out for a bit and graphics are very nice, but thats about it, the feel of the game just makes me think they should spend alot more time working on it and do not release it for a few more months.
I was hoping they whould just take ffxi and polish it up but its just so bad that I lost all hope in this replacing anyones current mmorpg game they are playing, it might kill some time till GW2 or KOTR or even Cata comes out.
My final thoughts is I will not be buying this game and really makes me wanna go back to playing ffxi a game I really loved.
Rating: 5/10 <- and only 5 because of the graphics.

Just for fun, care to embellish upon your point/argument? You say the graphics are nice but the game is not good. That's all you've got?
For the sake of debate, I love this game. It is exactly the non-wow clone I was/have been hoping for. I have played sooo many mmos since leaving FFXI and they all fell flat for me (WOW, LOTRO, GW, AOC, COH/COV, WAR, D&DO, EVE). The only one that I enjoyed was EVE.
The level of challenge was not high enough for my taste and the stories felt cliche. I feel that the systems for this mmo are unique and a great start to pushing a new direction away from wow clones. Yes they are not mainstream and unlike the button grids and trays from other mmos.
It's ok for this to exist! If you don't like it, it's ok to not play! I know there is a game that you play that others might not enjoy for the same reasons they enjoy this particular game.
We need new directions in this genre.
I'm not saying you're wrong for not liking the game....it's your prerogative! I am saying that you should put up a decent objective argument for this instead of trying to just join in the hate parade that this game has going for it. (trust me, there is a love parade for it as well)
If GW and WOW are your kinds of games, then go play! I and others like me may not enjoy those games, but if you do then I applaud you! Seriously, it's ok.
We all love different games and we all hate them...but the constant foul posts about this game without any kind of good objectivism is dissolving this forum into a pit of hate.
Misery loves company...and man...there is a lot of company here this week!
Not everyone will make it into open beta, and those who did are filling the boards with this smaktalk without giving balanced arguments and following up everything with an emphasis that this is their opinion.
I mean this in a very good natured way...just trying to quell the hate with some honest mature debate.

I think it's really funny seeing all the people who are freaking out over things like the UI not being like every other UI out there. So much for American PC gamers being able to learn quickly and adapt to new things. Apparently they can only handle new versions of old things. Maybe they just don't have the attention span to deal with something new?
I've never played any FF game before but I really like this. I very much like that it isn't another clone of WoW, LoTRO, WAR, etc., etc., etc!
It was obviously designed to not function like those. For those of you who aren't freaked out about the idea of having a game that functions a little different than all the other games and isn't meant to be played in exactly the same style, you might want to give this a try. For the rest of you there are lots & lots of games out there for you. lol
Im just waiting until i can get an open beta key to really decide if im going to cancel me and my wifes pre-ordered CE's. From what im reading i am REALLY down about this game now. And i just bought all new hardware for both me and my wife to be able to run this game adequately. Im hoping they start issuing beta keys again so i can give it a whirl. I don't think my wife will enjoy the game now even though she is so hyped. She didn't like ffxi and if the ui is the same with menu's and needing a gamepad to play i think SE can count 2 more canceled pre-orders and add that to the mass number.
Hopefully i'll get to play the open beta and really enjoy it so i can actually have something to play. Nothing good out atm, and i've been waiting for this game for a LONG time.
No Gamepad needed, works fine with Mouse and Keyboard, the whole interface is slow, but well configured, just not the same as most Other MMO's out there, set up to work well with a Console when they release it.
3) Movement in this game is a joke- yes I understand they want to make it differnt but there is differnt then there is this. Ok fine if 45 percent like it one way then give us the option to choose so then everyone can enjoy it but this is the main killer so far. Just do not force one way on all the masses especially if I am going to pay for it.
4) The whole non tutorial is a joke trying to figure out what the hay is going on is a joke.
5) Very dissapointed was really looking forward to this game.
Will keep plugging away to see if it gets better but so far I already cancled my pre-order.

Just because it's not a WoW clone doesn't mean it's great... The UI could indeed use some touch ups. There is no reason not to make the UI as smooth as possible. No one is freaking out because it fuctions differently people are freaking out because it could so obviously be better.
I played FFXI and had no problems whatsoever with the controls but lets be real, this could use some fixing. It sounds to be that you are so desperate for anything that isn't like WoW that you have fooled yourself into believing that that this is great.
My point is: Even with a more effective UI it still wouldn't feel or play like WoW at all.

I don't freak out because it's different. I like complex UIs that contain useful information but this one is the exact opposite.
What annoys me is that it's almost completely useless and gives no feedback on anything. The UI feels like a step backwards in gaming. Good luck finding anything quickly if you don't know where to look. You shouldn't have to go to game websites to figure out how to use a UI in a video game.
EVE's UI was complex but useful. If you looked at it long enough you could understand where things were or where they might be. FFXIV's UI is just.. there. Things are in locations that don't make sense. Equipping items is a chore in itself.
There is nothing intuitive about the UI, it's complete trash. Games shouldn't be devolving they should be evolving, including UIs and gameplay.

The sad thing is that the core game hasn't changed a lot since alpha/closed beta. Square listens to very little of the feedback from the community (with posts of changes players want going on for hundreds of pages).
The game needs another year, not a few more months, before a larger majority of players will find it a good choice in the MMO market. Unfortunately it seems Square is catering to FFXI players who will play anything so it's not likely to change that much.
My prediction is that after 6 months, the only people left playing this will be those who played and loved FF11.
funny thought maybe that is the target audience.
I doubt that they were their only target. How many of those that play FFXI are going to pay to play both? If FFXIV is basically a graphical upgrade over FFXI then I imagine eventually those that do sub to both will drop FFXI. So, if they have 500,000 subs for FFXI half of those stay subbed to both and all of those same 500,000 sub to FFXIV, they may get 6 mos of say 750,000 combined subs, but after that 6 mos lets say it drops to 50,000 subs to FFXI and 500,000 to FFXIV, for a total of 550,000 . If something like this holds up, then they haven't really gained a whole hell of a lot with FFXIV only targetting FFXI fans. They might as well just given FFXI a complete graphical overhaul, add more content and not have bothered with FXIV if their intention was to only reach out to the fans already playing FFXI.
Just played for 30 min and very unimpressed with the game.
#1 The game simply does not run well. My PC is not high end but its ok and this game runs like crap.
#2 No tutorial to get a player started. I dont need my hand held but just a little help getting started should be included. I just spent 30 min running around trying to figure out what to do and who to talk to. When I play a game I want to actually play from login and not scratch my head trying to figure out what to do.
#3 If I have to talk to every NPC and read through the boring chat text then forget about it. I dont need quest markers on the npc heads but it could be like Everquest 2 where if you pass by a NPC they will say something to you letting you know they have something for you to do.
If this game releases in this current state then it will fail faster than any AAA mmo ever made. I am not done with this game yet and will try it some more but as of right now its not looking good for me and Final Fantasy XIV.
I never played any FF before and I must say that im very impressed with this game.
I got my xbox360 controller on the pc and started playing. Reading the damn dialogs was more than enough for me to know where to go and what to do. The gameplay is excellent, graphics superb and the story is engaging so far. A great game.
Im led to believe that people are just not even trying to read the quests and come to FF thinking this is a click click click, get quest, look map and deliver game, and its not. Really, just read the damn dialogs and its all there

This guy hits it right on the head, I got into beta yesterday. And well, I may be a great fan of the FF series. But I for one adore this game without a controller even. This game its reward for effort factor works different than for example wows quick quest system. Its completely different, and that is why I think alot of players wine. I also think the tutorial is sufficient for a Beta, and that the game its quitte solid already. Some buggy dialogs, and maybe some enhancement to the way the world map works. but it doesnt break the game at all. A lot of players are addicted to the fast reward for little effort factor alot of new games have ( its proven by tests, Just like a Lab mouse in a box, pressing a button for a snack. they learn really quick how the easy system works and keep on pressing because the effort/reward ratio is so satisfying.) FFXIV takes a different approach, and I like it.
but a good thing is, all the QQ-boys leave during beta, so we don't got a mass of retarded people downgrading the game after release due to its requirement for effort.
(sorry for the messed up grammar/spelling, its 2:38am and I had a long day ;x)

Darn near every time devs listen to the pissing and moaning of players it always seems to result in screwing something up far beyond repair. Then you get players backpeddling and sayin: "Ummm that's not exactly what we wanted." I saw it happen plenty of times:
UO shard spilt
DAoC class inbalances
SWG jedi unlocking
LoTRO and endgame gear restrictions
WoW and shamans vs paladins
Just to name a few off the top of my head. Please try to put two things in perspective when wondering why SE does not appear to be listening to US whiners:
FFXIV core target is japanese players
SE is following the same strategy that it has with ALL it's FF IPs (consoles first mentality)
Seriously if you do not like not like what's being developed for a different market, which happens to be also available for US/EUR players if they choose to play then wait for GW2 and TOR. I mean all this pissing and moaning about change reminds me of trying to take someone to a japanese restaurant, ordering them a bowl of miso soup and when they get it they don't like the taste so they ask to add noodles, chicken broth and pieces of chicken to it for taste.........well grats moron. You just made yourself a bowl of chicken noodle soup! I wanted you to try something different.........oh well.

I'm sorry, I thought that this forum was for discussion. I'll let you get back to your blind acceptance of any crap a game company throws at you.
But good luck with that and remember next time you see a feature you don't like.. just shut up and take it like a man, since that's what you are calling people morons.
Ok per haps a few months is wrong perhaps a year or more would be best, to seriously iron out the bugs more, I just hope they not rushing it out just to beat a WoW Expansion because honestly WoW is nothing special anymore. I did in 2 years playing WoW which took me 6 years in FFXI to do...which was become so bored of leveling alts/classes and doing end game conent.
I was hoping this new edition of Final Fantasy whould bring me back to my roots of mmo gaming experience, but the OB was a very sad thing, I just sure hope over the release and the first 6 months of it going live they will do some major changes and then perhaps then I will rejoin Final Fantasy world and be a master healer once more
As for why I said the game was bad....
The controls are very clunky, you have NO IDEA what to do at the beginning of the game, hell it took me awhile to get out of the starting town, and I know its a little thing but when I hit M for map I would love to be able to move it around to see exits and such. Lacking in hotkeys built in sucks also, having to use the UI all the time is silly. Perhaps they just want to make it custom to you so you just make your own hotkeys/macros which is nice in a way just wish they gave you a base to start.
They need to switch the cursor to hardware or make some new coding for it in the game it jumps all over, and god forbide you do not have a solid system(I do) but I feel sorry for the people that will have to fork out the big bucks just to play this game because not all of us NON Asia players do not gold farm for an income
Altough the landscapes and everything were amazing looking my character was looking not so hot either they need to work on the moving mechanics of the Taru's(Yes I know they are no longer tarus but forgot there new names) but my little guys legs were moving a mile a minute and looked like a road runner cartoon.
Also Casting is very odd/slow hitting 2 Fire a guy...no wait I have to see if I wanna be an aoe or not....I miss my Firaga III!
In closing I know the game will do well just because the huge following over seas(from me) and they will play anything that is by Square Enix, but as a former hardcore gamer of FFXI I will not be making the move to this game till they fix it up and make it more use friendly, because we are lazy American's(Altough I'm Canadian but you get the idea" we do not real Instructions! we need online in game tutorials to help us out and yes I know its a WoW thing to have ! above peoples heads to see if they are a quest giver but you know what...it works!
Ok all done now, let the flaming begin
Canada Forever!
Edited because my spelling/grammer sucks...and now...Flame on!

A discussion is usually when banter is exchanged between parties where the persons involves usually leave open-ended remarks that invite the equally weighted responses of others into the ongoing discussion. I didn't get any of that from your first response nor your rebuttal to my response to you.
What I did gather from your post was a judgement that if SE doesn't listen to US players, the game will fail. And my response was pretty much: Try something different. If you don't like it, move on. But don't go calling for it to conform to a dried out US standard for MMO practices and then under the same breath ask for companies to try something different (maybe not you personally).
I may try FFXIV somewhere down the line for my PS3. But for now I'll wait. By the way, I do play a ton of mmos and I definitely played a lot of crap out there. But where we differ is that my experience broadens my viewpoint and your viewpoint narrows your experience.
P.S. I didn't call you nor anyone else a moron. I simply gave a colorful analogy.
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
At first I was dissapointed and nervous and didn't really like what I was seeing. (I started in the foresty area.) Then I restarted changed from a Tartumage to a Conjuerer and started in the dunes/desert area and I'm having a much better experience. Perhaps its the way everything is laid out, I'm not sure... but I feel a lot more confident about this game now than I did about 4 hours ago. Plus once you figure out where everything is and how it all works (which is frustrating at first) it because much more enjoyable.

Well to answer your questions,
1. XIV is a next gen mmo, sadly that will mean some old PeeCees won't cope...but their is a PS3 version coming next year. 2. The early part of the game is a tutorial actually...clearly you managed to miss that. 3. Yeash is your attention span so short you cannot follow the game plot, or can you not use quest journal, if you even got to guildleve hard to see how that could mess up on you early on. I think perhaps XIV has a learning curve that puts it beyond some, so I would suggest head to WoW.

Dude get serious. I have been a Lineage 2 player for 5 years and that game is more hard core and unforgiving than any of these little Fantasy PVE games will ever be. Stop being a blind fool and look at what people are saying. If all these post are comming up about the same issues then something is wrong. I have been reading thread afther thread on this game and there are much more complaints than praises. People have opinions just like you have yours. If you like the game than go and play it but the go to WoW line is old. And telling somebody to go to a better game makes you look like a total idiot.
I want to like the game, but i just cant.... clunky ui like many others have stated and rehashed allready, I played every final fantasy series starting with the original nintendo, there was a reason i never got into ff11 and it clearly shows here.

Good luck in your endeavors!!
I am sorry but the game stinks.
1) Graphics is great we all agree.
2) Character Creations is to funny.
Oh good god shut up already, the game is fine.
My .02
Just played for 30 min and very unimpressed with the game.

I will say this: My opinion is starting to shift.
So I'm being much more happy with the game.
PS. How is this a Next Gen MMO?
I want to like the game, but i just cant.... clunky ui like many others have stated and rehashed allready, I played every final fantasy series starting with the original nintendo, there was a reason i never got into ff11 and it clearly shows here.
