Negative posts scaring me away............

First off let me say I have NEVER played a FF based game but I had high hopes as I followed this game that it could be interesting.  I have been balking on pre-ordering based on all the reading I have done here and am really leaning towards not wasting the money on this game...even though money is no issue for me its just the principle.

First off I will say the only "fantasy" type game I have played was WOW and really have played no other fantasy game so I cant really compare WOW to anything.  I liked WOW but after 2-3 years it just got boring and repetitive and I quit about 2 months after ICC came out and we downed the LK.  I went so far as to completely deleting it from my system as I do NOT want to go back to it.

To be honest Im waiting for GW2 to come out as it seems more my speed but I really wanted to play FF XIV in the interim but a lot of the complaints seem to be on the UI and its console feel not being fluid and its a better experience with a controller.  Well Im 44 and never used a controller on a PC game and dont think I want to start and dont think I should have to.  There are other issues people seem to be complaining about but the main sticking point for me would the the UI issues as im sure gameplay and graphics are fine.

If there is ANYONE out there with any objectivity on the game that can give me a reason to try it?  remember I have never played a FF based game so keep this in mind.

If you're looking for some particular feature, story element, or somesuch reason to play, i doubt that it'll be exceptionally compelling.  The best reason I can offer to try it is simply to try it.  If you don't, you'll wonder, and expanding your horizons isn't a bad thing.  My advice however is to try and snag a spot in the open beta while its going on.  I was really looking forward to this game until I got a chance in the open beta, pretty much convinced this game is not for me after all.

I pre-ordered collector's edition for myself and my girlfriend. If the game is not great, well then we lost 2 trips to the movies or dinner.

    Its not a big deal.

However, if the game is fun, its only $15 a month and gives you how many hundreds of hours of entertainment?

So think of it as small risk, big reward.

Everyone needs to realize that this game is in *BETA* whether its open or not there is a reason it isn't released yet. Do not create an opinion about this game before launch. Expect bugs and things when you are playing a beta version of anything. If you are the type who get turned off easily by these kinds of things do not play the Beta. I know everyone keeps saying that it is a "stress test" what ever there is still a chunk of the game missing. This is not the release version, remember that. Do not take everyones negative comments about this game too seriously and do not judge this game till launch.

Was thinking about the open beta but i really dont have the patience for the troubles that have plagued others trying to DL and get in the OB.  I am probably going just keep an eye on this for about a month after release and take notice of the comments.

I like the fantasy concepts but if gameplay is an issue based on the UI even after a while then i will probably pass but I hate to just not give it a whirl.  I always try and give everything the benefit of the doubt but it just seems to be a major bone of contention with people.  It may not be with people who have played FF before but keep in mind Im one of the "new" ones they are potentialy targeting.

Serioulsy anyone who complains about UI in a beta shouldnt be in a beta. They need to go back to playing a finished product and leave the testing to people who understand what 'Beta' means. UI can easily be fixed/changed especially witha company like SOE behind it. As for controller use, pfft. I honestly cant see an mmo being better utilized with a console controller. But then again who knows. Im downloading the beta as i speak so ill see for myself.

Well, for one WoW is "steampunk", not fantasy. Second, the game hasn't even been released, and the open beta uses what is nearly the original "in house testers only" beta client, meaning they still haven't updated the UI. People who's first "online game" was WoW will probably want to stay away from anything that lacks an autoattack feature, as FFXIV has done away with that. In addition, things tend to survive more than 1 hit unless you are a caster dealing damage, which, to be honest, is about 500% longer than mobs in WOW last (before I quit I was killing 2-4 mobs in 1 ability as a paladin.) If you can get beyond the initial shock of not being a god compared to the enemies you face, it is actually a great game. The story is quite immersive, the music is simply divine, and the combat is fast-paced, even if the fights last longer than 10 seconds. Keep in mind that this is from the Open Beta only, and the world of the open beta is already as large as Azeroth was, minus the bugged areas of Azeroth that were completely devoid of any sort of life whatsoever.

Keep in mind that if you weren't able to run WoW on max settings, you are probably going to have to make a better PC or wait for the PS3 version. You'll want at least a top end dual core processor (I suggest an AMD Phenom instead, quad core works better) and a decent video card. No integrated  chips, they fail hardcore.

In short, if your first MMO was WoW, and you only like WoW-type games, you may not like FFXIV. If you are the type who enjoyed Everquest, Age of Conan, and Vanguard, you will likely fall in love with FFXIV. I am sure you didn't play FFXI, otherwise you wouldn't be paying attention to all the WoW fans who bash ANY new game ever released.

try it, if you don't like it then nothing is really wasted

If you like it, does it really matter what everyone else thinks? It's your time and money...if you like it, then that's all that matters.

I am currently playing in the open beta and have experienced some of the UI issues. Things that are different from WOW. But nothing to panic about, as long as you aren't a power gamer who has to have every piece of the UI optimized, basically forcing your will onto the UI.

I will not quit the game because of UI issues. These things tend to go away with time or you get used to it. Sometimes I wonder why MMO programmers need to make the same stupid mistakes over and over again, but eventually it becomes a minor annoyance. (Example: Why do they insist on catching the alt/contol/shift keys to switch the hotkey bar? Makes my G15 keyboard almost unusable since i have the keys programmed as alt-F10 etc. Now I am using it instead of the WASD keys, which i usually hate for movement.)

Actually my first MMO was Battleground Europe (formally WW2 online) back in 2003.

Tried WOW and thought it was pretty cool as it was something different.  I dont like to compare games as they are not supposed to be the same.  I will never say WOW was the best because I have nothing else to compare it to. Besides it best to always be objective when going into anything new.  Still keeping my mind open to trying it.

Making sure the UI is responsive and doesn't come with a 3 second lag is also part of a Beta.Testing hundreds of players in any given area interacting in a trillion different ways with the UI is valuable information.  Really anything can be addressed and fixed. Though this is SoE and they struggled with that in FFXI. So I think they need my constant complaints and bug reports.

Beta testing is all about gathering information big or small and then adressing that information in the correct order. Besides this will hopefully lead to a smoother release date for the Ps3 and then the Pc versions.

I also hope all major patches are on the disc instead of me having to download forever  lol.

I find it very hard to belive that they will change the ui or controls at this state. Contents maybe yes, quests, xp et cetera. But not the core of the game as it plays.

OP : Read the above. And More

So lets get this right , you are 44 and negative posts are scaring you away. Please please please give me a break, you can play this fine with a keyboard no mouse required. If you fail to realise that these forums are like a black hole , comprised of bitter and twisted nobodies whose sole purpose is to hate and suck the lifeblood out of MMO players.

Get a backbone and give this a try you won't be dissapointed.

Any MMO is value for money they pay for themselves, you can't really be that picky WoW is an easy MMO, try the game and ignore the negativity.

    This.

The game is in open beta, which is pretty much the end product.  There are only minor tweaks and bug fixes between now and release.  Every beta I've been in has seen no significant change from OB to Release and there is no reason to think this case will be any different.

Ive been on these forums for years and i can say in all honesty... ive never seen a positive post about any game, its a known fact that the MMORPG community hates every game.

Every MMO I have ever played has significantly continued to change after release.  There is really no such thing as an end product in these kind of games.

Also most games like MMOs, especially at launch, offer 30 free days when you buy the game. So I would also suggest trying it for the 30 days, if you don't like it by say day 25, cancel your sub so you don't get charged and then just give your account to a friend you know who does like the game but doesn't have the money to buy the retail.

The problem is the devs aren't listen to the players the ui and controls will not change on release and  it will kill this game. There are 300 plus pages of things that people are telling them to change and guess what not one dev has posted about anything since the start of closed beta. I am not a troll i wantd this game to be the best more then anyone but the controls and ui are going to be the death of this game and that is a shame.

It launches in less than three weeks, professor. This is it. And this is awful.

I wouldn't even play it if it were free. It's the opposite of fun. It's like a black hole of entertainment, from which no enjoyment can escape.

  • RenoakuRenoaku Member EpicPosts: 3,157

Well honestly I dont know how the game play is going to be at all, all I know is that personally I am not going to buy the new final fantasy until I hear some good words from someone. I had preorder but I cancel until I am sure, I learned my mistake of purchase of mortal 2, which was a waste of $40 USD, and everyone was right it totally sucked worse than darkfall.

I know that final fantasy the XIV looks pretty good with the graphics and everything, but many other games like AOC, Dark Fall, and City OF Heroes are advertised with CGI graphics not actual gameplay. Until Launch I personally wont make comments on game play as I have not tried it, and it is up to each users who wants to risk the loss of money if they dont like it, but I will say that unless I get confirmation that they remove the Fatigue system upon launch, or restrict it to some servers where you get no EXP at all if you play past 8 hours a week, I will not purchase this game. Period. It would have to go free to play for me to even download or try it then.
