Let's keep all the negativity away from this thread. My idea is that you would give an aspect or a feature of the game that you think makes it either good or special, but more importantly you have to tell us why!
I have seen many arguments in this forum that claim FFXIV is good because it is harder or more complex than some other MMOs. I did not understand those views, as I never did feel them during my time with the game. More often than not arguments or views aren't justified with any sort of descriptions or comparisions. The main point of this thread is answer the following questions:
What is a GOOD feature in FFXIV? or What makes FFXIV special?
and more importantly...
Why is it good or special?
---------------------------------------------
Character Animations
Player Character's animations were perhaps the most positive aspect of my experience with FFXIV during the closed beta.
Movement animations are both smooth and realistic. The combat animations are also fairly well done and there is a good variety in them. Some might find the added flashing effects and sounds a bit too much. If you are familiar with JapanRPGs, you feel right at home. The combination of animations, sounds and flash effects is approriate to the setting and do have the classic Final Fantasy feel.
In the beginning, you might feel rather bored seeing the same animation repeated all the time due to few skills that are in your arsenal. Like with most MMOs, this does improve later on in the game.
SE has clearly spend a lot of time to make sure that characters have a lot of detail in them. There is also a long list of emotes giving more social players a lot to tinker with. In fact, the list of emotes is pretty extensive in comparison to many other titles out there.

For me? It felt like a final fantasy game.
Immersive not your number 10005 hero in our game now go lvl to raid dungeons.
Lighting Effects
Not only is there an amazing burst effect when you go from a dark area to a lighted area, but strong light sources show on your character, such as in this picture where the campfire "glows" off of people around it.
Why are new and advanced lighting effects good? Like so many things in this game, it conributes towards greater immersion in the game world.
just the fact we know SE always update constantly and that FFXI is already 8-9 years and running give me the confidence that FFXIV will be better in the long run.
but it probably wont be smooth at the start.but will confirm get better and better along the way.
i also miss the train for starting ffxi at the beginning and i do not intend to skip it this time around ^^
The thing I like most about this game is that it allows you to explore. It allows you to figure things out on your own. It doesn't tell you exactly where everything is.
Also, it's player character models aren't horrid like in many other new games. Aion and FFXIV did it right, WoW LOTRO AOC EQ2 etc did not.
It's a PVE based game for a change, thank god. And it will be majorly group based. ATM in beta it's more soloing, but that's because it's a beta.
This game will succeed whether people think it will or not. Will it have 12 million players? No, but it will have a solid fanbase that won't be rotating in and out every month.
It also contributes to slow framerates on all but the most up to date machines if badly programmed, which unfortunatly is the case here. Sure it looks great on screenshots, but most players will be in for a nasty surprise, as soon as they want to move around.
The Animations are top notch though, gotta agree with that.
Thanks op for the positive and infomative reivew. It's good to see for a change.
This thread is meant for positive things. Lacking the money to buy a good gaming machine isn't the problem of SE. I have a year old system and I can run things near maximum graphics with no problems.
Well done with keeping the negativity out Clubmaster. /sigh well you won't be missed.
Holden that picture is amazing! Ill be playing on PS3 so I won't even have light burst thingy, cause I don't think its something the PS3 can do, but hey in a few years time, like SE said, when a moderate computer can play FF14, Ill be loving such a crisp and beautiful view.
What do I like? I have already said that I like how SE keeps their games aesthetically pleasing. The character models are controlled and I like that.
But most of all, Id have to say I like that its on PS3, I love console MMOs I can play on my couch with a keyboard and controller.
I love snails.
I love every kinda snail.
I just want to hug them all, but I cant.
Cant hug every snail.
I didn't talk about my computer just the majority of computers out there. And even for the most delusional elitist it should be clear that it actually is a problem for square when 90% of their target audience can't run the game properly.
x2 lol
OP is unimpressed.
I love snails.

The reason it is considered "hard" is because for the Hardcore player after they finish their quests for the day they would have to grind mobs in order to keep on leveling. For the casual gamer it is great because you do not feel the need to do tedious questing and you are able to enjoy the main story line. Being freed up from questing also allows you to go mine and do other skills. Yes I will agree it does seem like a regular final fantasy game but how is that a bad thing (I know there are haters) some of the console final fantasy's have been the best storyline's I have ever played. I have played more MMOs than I could care to count and I have been looking for the game that is going to actually grab my attention and after playing beta for this I believe that FF14 has a ton of potential. You can love it or hate it but it is still going to be a great game.

I like that SE stays true to their vision of the game and doesn't change things based on forum whining(Also like that they don't have an official forum beyond the beta boards)..
They build their games within their vision and you can take it or leave it and they don't care. They design games for their fans and stay true to their fans not what garners them the most pennies.
With that said I like the most that I can go from my PC > my 47" HDTV @ 1920x1080 and it looks and plays BEAUTIFULLY! I bought a wireless keyboard so I can sit in my recliner with my feet up and play FFXIV(Controller + KB 4tw! get with the program kiddies).. just like I did with FFXI.. it rocks and I love it and look forward to launch.
As a FFXI player I was actually worried it was gonna be to commercialized from all the talks, and the more videos that came out the less excited I got. But once I was able to get into game I realized it plays like FFXI in a new world, and I'm really ok with that . It is a new game for us. I'll keep my $7 ffxi sub, get my cool shoes and play both games..
No question you will probably see the same positives from most everyone and they are related to graphics.
Also the cutscenes are great, both that and graphics i expected to be very good and they are.
I will say the characters are nice looking and the clothing realism is nice as wel las mentioned lighting efects,i just figured that would be grouped into graphics. If i could think of one good thing that stood out for me in actual game play, aside from graphics i would spill it but i just can't think of anything.Well maybe i can think of one,i actually love the keypad setup, you get everything you need in a compact area, got the in/out camera, movement, the auto run, auto lock, targeting ,yep everything all in the key pad it works great.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
It is indeed VERY pretty.

I'd say it's just a lack of hardware support and optimization. My laptop which has a Radeon 4670, 4gb ram and a i3-350M does OK on the game. My Desktop with a Nvidia GTX 480, i7 950, 6gb of tri-channel Ram, has stuttering issues to the max. It's really frustrating.
He who keeps his cool best wins.
Actually, lighting itself doesn't affect the framerate so much. Shadow calculations and rendering definitely do.
That said, I agree, the lighting is fantastic in this game. It's really just a "small" thing, but the simulation of your eyes adjusting to indoor/outdoor dark/light settings is awesome. It's almost like a "reveal" every time you enter or leave a cave or building.

So far, I really liked the first bit of storyline+cutscene that you find during the tutorial and the first few quests that comes with it. It felt like I was playing an RPG, my character was there chatting with the same clothes and all, unlike games that put up pre-programmed characters in cut-scene that have nothing to do with your character. It's also one of the few MMOs where I'm actually reading the quest text, they clearly put some effort into it.
I also liked the amount of information you can learn about various features by talking to NPCs, it was really well detailed, very helpfull. Gradually finding new NPCs, learning about their guild, what does "x" thing means and how to use it, etc.
Monsters are pretty strong for newbie monsters. SE had claimed that FFXIV would be solo-friendly, but it seems to appeal more to groups instead and I think that's great. Group-friendly games have great communities.
I'll leave it at that and update as I keep playing.
On a side note, can't believe there's a gold spammer in Camp Bead Rock, east of Limsa Lominsa!
thankfully, a positive topic about the final "fucking georgeous" fantasy.
except graphical and audial qualities that everyboby mentioned before, I made my list in light of my personal thoughts:
it's epic because;
- it's hard. no guides, no labels, no pointers, no auto-routes... if you find and finish something, you feel yourself really successful,
- there's a story and if you want to win you have to read and understand the story,
- it's already very detailed, even in beta. there are many things to explore, to exprerience, to try,
- it's different. theres nothing like your old-school mmos. this is the time of revolution,
- you cannot smoke or drink during play, you need your both hands. good for your health,
- gears are only made by crafters. production and economy make you involve in the game,
- sometimes you feel the spirit of adventure games from amiga days (yeah I'm old),
- this is not "free-to-play&pay-to-win" game (I played dozens of them). you need your brain and your effort,
- combat is slow. you can't defeat a monster by typing 1,2,3,1,3,1,3,1,3... you need a strategy.
- it's not child's play, community is mature enough.
- it's Final Fantasy!

The good:
It looks pretty.
The armory system is a good idea, basically changing jobs on the fly instead of at your mog house.
The gathering is pretty spiffy.
Aetherite travel stuff is nice.
The bad:
Durability system is complete shit
Cities are huge, so you spend tons of time moving between places
The game is unresponsive, be it after you enter the command to execute an attack or try to move your mouse.
The UI is a copy/paste job of FFXI and is designed with consoles entirely in mind, they don't give a fuck about PC gamers for some reason, even though they're the ones who have made FFXI a success.
Poor implementation of armory system, you have to use the macro system to accomplish anything.

The thing that I think is most worth mentioning is the animation of the characters. The way that you adjust your feet as you slow to a stop, the way you shift your weight slightly as you make a quick turn, the way you hold your arm motionless as you reverse direction so that your right arm syncs back up with your left leg. It is positively gorgeous. I understand that there are still people who feel that jumping contributes more to gameplay and/or immersion than fluid animations, and that's a fine stance to have... but I think it's clear now that having both would have been difficult if not impossible. Leaping three feet into the air from a standing start with no start-up time isn't just unrealistic; it wouldn't look right.
I would have to call the priority of fluid movement animation over freedom of movement a positive feature.
Thank you for this thread.
What I love about the game is that it's closer to reality than most. what I mean by that is that yo have to talk to NPC's that may not be clearly defined. You will never find an NPC that has a "?" or "!" over their head. I love the dialogue in the game. It is extremely well written. Unlike other games, you HAVE TO read the dialogue to know where to go and what to do.
I also really like the fact that somethings that are so easy in other mmos are harder in FFXIV. For example, traveling. It takes a really long time to get from one place ot another, whether in a city or open area and especially from city to city. Why you ask? Because it adds to the immersion. The world will never seem big if you can jump from region to region in 1 second. Yes, I know we have return and teleport, but that requires Anima, which is finite.
I love the complexity of the crafting system. I love that there are no loot drops from regular mobs. I love that the economy is entirely based on crafting, thus making crafting jobs on par with fighting classes. I love that you have to interact with people to find the item you're looking for, thus contributing to player interaction and developing community.
There are so many more, but that's just what came to the top of my head.
One more bad thing which absolutely must be resolved prior to launch: the downloader. It's the worst thing I've seen since the blizzard downloader.
Edit: As I typed this, the patcher literally just froze at 94.6%. Now I have to use utorrent to download 3.4% of a patch.

What century we're in has nothing to do with whether a game has jumping or swimming. There's nothing "21st Century' about either mechanic. Donkey Kong had jumping in 1983.
It's a design decision based on the needs of the game in question.
There is no "rule" that states jumping and swimming are "requirements" of any MMO, in any century. There is no rule that a MMORPG "must" have anything, other than to be online and support thousands of people simultaneously logged in sharing the same world.
It's the same as people saying "A MMORPG must have PvP or it's not a real MMO". Again.. No.. it's personal preference. There is no rule that states a MMORPG must have PvP, and there is no rule stating that a MMO must have jumping or swimming.
And no, there is no "standard" either.
It's all about personal preference, and personal preference is not a mandate.
