The longest I played an MMO for was EverQuest for 5+ years - not sure how long in all, if anyone can calculate it for me, go ahead. I started a few months before the release of Kunark, when I had a level 46 Bard (back when level 50 was the highest you could go!) with full Lambent and 2 Short Swords of the Ykesha! Wow! Uber!
A hint: When you quit a game (or move to a new server, in my case), never ever ever annouce you're giving away all your uber stuff in the middle of the auction area. No no no. Baaaad idea. I was so swamped by people when I did that, I couldn't move in any direction. Literally. I jumped up and got caught in mid air by the press of people around me!
Moved to a new server just after Kunark and started playing all sorts of characters, but finally ended with a Monk which reached 65th with all sorts of AA's, Cloak of Flames (rolled for and won at a Nagafen raid! woot!), raided PoP and generally kicked butt. But then I quit and deleted the character.. for 9 months.. then came back and made another character (Shadowknight) up to 65th.. and quit and deleted.. and came back again.. Arrghh! Never again! No no no. Last time I quit, GoD was just released and people were flocking in that direction.
Before that though, I played a MUSH for 8 years! Shadowrun Seattle - the best MUSH around. Its still alive today, though with like 1/10th of the playerbase it used to have.
AC1 lasted me 3 years, 8 months. AC2, 6 months. DAoC, 8 months AO, 2 months. PS, 1 year 5 months and rising WoW, 1 months and rising (not including OB) Shadowbane, 6 months. Horizons, 1 week. Allegiance, 1 year, 6 months. Counterstrike, Day of Defeat, and other half-life mods, 6 months CS, over a year on alllll the rest.
And, the longest lasting game (for me) is! *drumroll* EQ1, 2 days. I couldn't STAND EQ1, overhyped game if you ask me.
Hmm. 9 months of Earth & Beyond, from July '03 through March '04, I left angrily after they announced sunset but came back for the last two days. I'd still be playing it today if it hadn't been shut down. I had plans.
I've been playing AO for about 5 months now, dunno how much longer I'll be playing it. Great game but life keeps getting busier.
over a year of eve (though took one break), quit it this month

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

Longest game?
Star Wars Galaxies - One year
Still looking around for a new game to waste my money on.
Meridian 59 almost 4 years I think
AC1 2 years
Lineage 2 (8 months now since open beta)
and about 400 dollars on the countless of other games I've tried and didn't stay for more then the free trial month.
EQ for 3 years and 2 months.
