Question for seasoned beta testers

I want to love this game and for the first 4 hours I do, but I went exploring today around Ul'dah for quite sometime covering most of the two large first parts of the map and never noticed a single village, monument, life-form other than the recycled list of monsters (and a few drakes) and the same desert landscape over and over and over and over again.

Is our primary focus in the game to do do Guildleves (which are nothing but simple repeatable kill quests that are capped at 8 for 48 hours nonetheless) and to grind, or is there more to it?  Im looking for life, Im looking for immersion and story, but outside the short-lived city quest at the beginning, there seems to be none of that.

Now I understand that SE said they were holding some content back, but this game, as it stands right now, is nothing more than a sandbox with no castles in it.  There are 4 cities (including the higher level one) and other than that, nothing but repeating scenary and creatures-a-plenty to grind on.

I've got to be missing something...there must be something Im not seeing, not doing or maybe I havent talked to the right NPC's, but there must be something else to do other than guildleves and grinding?

If not, then this game is gonna fall flat on it's face...it can't even hold it's own against WAR at this point...

when you say seasoned, are you thinking a light salt and peppering?  only in house paid testers have had full access, and i dont htink they hang out here.

    LOL...seasoning is good...lol.

Nah, I mean someone that has been able to get to physical level 15/class level 15 or above...someone that's been playing for more than just a few days off and on...

We only have the beginning like.. 3 main story quests to work with in the beta.   It's SE and they are pretty much always good for a great storyline.   As of right now, as beta testers, they are using us to stress test the servers, try guildleves, and mess around with combat/ui, I believe.

Oh...ok, well that makes me feel much better...Im fine with the mechanics, pace of combat, graphics, lag (none), and all the other things...was just worried that this game would not have any story to it after that first story, although it was hard to believe seeing as the first story in, I believe, both areas led you to believe that it would be continued.  If this is the case, then I still believe it's a pretty darn good game....

At the moment (open beta) the economy (harvesting, crafting, selling) is 90% of the game. Kinda like it but it'll definitely change at launch when we will be able to continue the story quests.

    Playing: Starcraft II.
Played: Tibia, Ragnarok Online, Ultima Online, Guild Wars, World of Warcraft.
Wanna play: Guild Wars 2, SW:TOR, Final Fantasy XIV, Diablo III.

Not sure about your definition of seasoned, but I've been in a number of betas (6 so far).  In my experience, the beta is pretty close to how the game will be when released.  The only restrictions on the MMO betas that I've seen are some higher level content, but I would be surprised to learn if there was content hidden that you would normally get to in 4 hours of play.

None of my past beta experience extends to SOE, so they could be running things differently.  However, usually game vendors want to expose all the beginning and most of the mid-game content so that the bugs in them can be reported and, ideally, resolved prior to official launch.  They usually figure they have time to catch the late-game content and fix before the majority of players reach those areas.
