Questions about group mechanics

an anyone enlighten me about the party member selection? I mean, I sometimes enter in a group and I have a harder time actually selecting the members than actually healing or buffing, it just seems way to hard to tabbing and waiting till out target passes by.
Is there any way to select directly a member without clicking in it with the mouse? I use a gamepad and its hard to click with a screen full of players and mobs.
