I am starting to get worried, From what I been hearing after the 8 leve quests are you bascally forced to grind for the next 40 or so hours? I ask this because although I like the style of FF14, I can get that kind of gameplay in any f2p game and not cost me a penny. Is there other quests to do for exp and rewards besides leve and the main storyline? Or even just for monetary/item rewards are fine, just something to distract me from the grind is all I want. I also hear crafting is a royal pain in the ass as well from various people. Anyone wanna dispel these rumors/feelings? Even my best friend says the game feels to much like a grinder.
"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

If you really think that FFXIV sounds like a korean grinder, then you've never seen one :P
There's also a lot more than 8 leves (about 7-8 combat leve, 3 harvesting leve, and 20+? crafting leve). This exclude the ability to help others in their leve quests, etc. Leve rewards a lot more XP than I had expected, the trick is not to complete all the leve in a day and rather balance between a couple of leve quests, then a bit of storyline quests. Add a bit of crafting/harvesting if you're into that, otherwise you can help other players in their leve quest.
I'd also expect more Leve quest to appear when the game launches.
But yeah, leveling is far from being on the same level as a korean grinder.
Edit: Just remember that SE went for a little more casual-friendly game. If you play like an hardcore player and focus too much on leveling, you will feel grind and the gap between casual and hardcore won't be so large from what I've seen so far. Something to think about.
Its been said that the developers are holding back quest content prior to the actual release of the game.
That said, I think it would be a fair bet to say that FFXIV will have more grinding than a game such as WOW, as quest based character progression has not traditionally been a characteristic of its predecessor.
If you don't like grinding exp with a group (which is a different style of game play for most folks these days) this probably isn't the game for you.

FFXI and probrably FFXIV will end up as mostly a grinding game, but certainly not in the context as you put it.
Korean MMOs such as Lineage 2 and Aion bare little to no resemblance to the FF MMOs, since storytelling is the backbone to the series.
theyre deffinitely holding back quests. ive ventured just outside of the newbie areas and have been one shotted 3400 hp over my lvl 8 character. Pretty sure they dont want us to explore more than the bare essentials of the starter areas.
Crafting can be time consuming and tedious at times. Also known as synthesizing. You equip w/e tools you need to craft and whip out a table and start hammering away. There currently arent any official recipes for anything so its guess work on what materials to use for what you desire to make. After you get your materials correct it'll give you an option of what you can make with those materials, you choose what you want to create and it ask you to confirm the recipe and tells you it will cost a certain amount of crystals to do the crafting. Im not exactly sure where to get crystals ive found some randomly walking throught the game and after killing mobs i do know i dont have many of them at lvl 8. If you have enough crystals it will start the crafting process and youll be given 4 options on how you should craft your item, standard synth, rapid synth(focus on efficientcy), quality synth(focus on quality), or wait. There seems to be no real order to this part and seems like pure guess work. a flash and a ding means you succeeded and the percentage of being done goes up the durability goes down and the quality goes up(hopefully). If you choose wrong sparks shoot out of your potential new creation and if you guess wrong too many times u fail. you fail when the durability runs out. Ive failed about 50/50.
I can see how specializations would come into play. One guy mines, sells to the blacksmith, blacksmith smelts, sells to the armorer, he makes armor, sells to the miner. And so on and so forth. They allow everyone to do anything but its so tedious i dont see why anyone would want to or have time to level more than a few crafts to max level.
Gathering was fun at first until i realized i wouldnt be able to craft much for the amount i was getting when compared to the time it took to get the mats. Fishing kinda sucked, i could never get a fish to bite. Thats not much different from real life though.
yes it is somewhat like a korean grinder, anyone that tells you differently is just fooling themselves.
If they think group grinding is different? I guess they never played lineage 2?
Anyways yes it will be a grinder, but at the same time it also has a good story. I mean every single mmo is a grinder... I don't think the leveling/grinding will be as boring and linear as it was in say Aion.
People keep on not understanding...
Yes 8 leaves per 48 hours but the time is of the server not yours!
If the server's day starts at 2 am in your time and you do all your leaves at 8:00 pm you don't have to wait for 48 hours but 28 hours.
I know it doesn't solve it but it's NOT 48 hours unless you get them up all exactly when it turns the day.
Hello there,
Concerning the levequests i have some info.
You can do a maximum of 20(or 15) levequests per 2 days. After 2 days passed, all levequests will reset (info not tested by myself yet). So the 20 leves you have done will be available again. News leves are available every 10 levels and there are many Disciple of Hand/Lands quests.
You cannot grind more than 15 hours per class. 8 hours of full exp, then 7 hours how degrading exp (100% to 0%). Each class have 15 hours. Many spells and abilities from 1 class will be usable for another class.
Exemple : if you have a lvl 6 Conjurer, and then change to Pugilist. The Cure ability will be available for the Pugilist. I wont go indepth (restrictions and such) in the cross-class system but leveling more than 1 class is generally beneficial.
Now for the korean grinder : I have started yesterday in the beta. ive played 5 hours and i am lvl 12, and i think lvl 50 is the cap so i doubt it will be much of a grinder...
Now concerning the crafting system
No instructions is given from square enix but if take the time to try it, it make sense : easy items are easy to make, hard items are hard to make, gaining level in crafting will make hard items easier to make, etc. ive tried pretty much all professions but weaver more in depth.
I have to go, sorry i cant give more information atm.
btw: im french (and in a rush) so yeah... pardon my english.
From what I have experienced you can do 8 regional (battle + harvest) levs and 8 local (crafting) levs every 2 days. There are also factional levs but none have opened up for me. Plus you can share battle levs with other players.
There are also behests that seems to be every hour, from an npc that shows up at the camps and asks for helps, but leaves onces they have enough volunteers.
