Unfortunately it is true. So many put their hopes on game "X" then that game ends up being not quite what was hoped. Yes, it can be demoralizing and can affect ratings.
We have to be able to see the game as it is and not compare it to what it is not. The game is decent, I love the graphics, but I didn't like the last FF online game, I knew I wouldn't like this one. I tried it because I needed something new. Its just not for me, others may love it.
For me, it felt too much like a console game. But, so far, ALL the Final Fantasy games that have been put out on the PC felt the same way, I knew what I was getting into so I refuse to rank the game on that aspect. If it was a console game, it would be a beauty indeed, nonetheless, it is beautiful. The gameplay is where I fell off.
The problem with hype is that it is a hard thing to live up to. Player A likes B, C, and D and the game looks to satisfy that want, but player X likes Y, Z, B and player P likes Z, B, I aspects. The variables could go on forever. The game, when it finally goes live, may cover some of all or non of all. The hype drops, dreams are crushed and the players have to face reality and judge the game for what it actually is and not what they wanted it to be.
I am still in "La La" land in what JGE will be, I know parts of my wishes for it will be crushed, but nonetheless, I would give it a fair shake when it comes out...if ever, and will judge it on what it claims to be, not what I declared it should be. Because hey, I didn't program it.
I'm thrilled the hype dropped, it was like watching two retarded monkeys fling poo at each other for weeks on end for a while there. Perhaps now the people that post about this game are like those of us that plan on playing for the long haul and not the give me something for nothing crowd.

would like to think so but it doesnt happen like that here on mmorpg.com, theres going to be trolls here for months to come, if you want real FFXIV discussion you will have to leave this site and go to a dedicated ffxiv site.
The correct answer is if you want a FFXIV discussion with people that have the same opinion as you on the game you will have to leave this site and go to a dedicated ffxiv site.
round you? You dont because your eyes was on the arrow. That my friend this is not exploration.
What are you talking about, what arrow? On other MMOs I take a quest, see where I have to go (possibly the game will tell me without having to read the quest) and complete it. On this game I take a quest, see where I have to go (game does tell me where to go through the location info from the quest log) and complete it with the disadvantage that 90% of this game is based on strict paths you have to take and not based on an open world, which is exactly the opposite of what you are trying to say.
Lol this is useless talk, what arrow? in wow by exemple. When you take a quest you got this arrow in from of your character, so you just have to follow. You got the same thing in lotro. And im sure a lots of other game have this feature. This is call quest helper.... In FXIV you got mark on your map for the guildleves, but that all. The newbie quest where this is in fact some sort of a city visit, you have to read the quest to know where to go.

Lol this is funny reminds me of ppl talking about Secret World having puzzle quests, yeah right lol until a thottbot or some other website comes along that everyone just tabs to see where to pickup all the quests and where to go exactly without reading anything doesnt matter how you slice the games quests will be exactly the same as every other mmo ppl will know where to pick them and where to go and it will be all on some DB.
Until SE decides to add the quest markers because its pointless not having them.
Let me see, how have the threads by the masses gone....

Anyways, I am actually having a good time with FFXIV, the game looks amazing, and the gameplay is very very different than anything I have played before so its been alot of fun for me.
Well said. I don't think I have anything to add. But yeah, soon SWTOR hype will go up, and then at release, same thing happens as the last 10 times. And same with guild wars 2, i'm certain.

So you said.. this is just a matter of opinion, i prefer a game who dont have this. For the thottbot argument i dont care since if they do create a bot for this i will not use it. And third party plug in dosent work well with SE.
Now I need to know, what is the next MMORPG in development to start following and get excited about?
That right there is the issue. You (and many people that use these forums) get themselves all excited when a game is announced. People start imagining how the game will play, how revolutinary the combat will be, how full of depth the crafting will be etc etc etc. Then the information comes out and they initially read the text how they want. People who aren't all hyped up can read what the notes actually mean but those who are all excited twist them to mean something amazing.
Then the inevitable. Those who are all jazzed up get to play the game for the first time. They are SHOCKED that this isn't the game they imagined and believed in. They do not realize the developers never promised them the game they built up in their minds but it doesn't matter, they are now angry and bitter. So what should they do now?
Repeat the process on the next announced game of course! Why learn from that experience and start being realistic about the expectations of new MMOs and wait until all the information is out before even thinking about trying it. No, it is far better to get overly excited by prospects that have never even been hinted at then to be realistic and not suffer the giant let down that no game will ever match your imagination.
Do not get hyped about games before anyone has played it. Do not think the next MMO will be "innovative". Do not preorder the game, EVER. Wait for the free trial to start instead of jumping on and buying a boxed copy right away. That way you know exactly what you are getting into, they have had time to fix all the major launch bugs, and you save yourself a lot of money and headaches. Do not be the guy who keeps latching onto games before they have even been played.
My apologies for getting excited about something new coming out. That being said, stfu
No one here was fantasizing about what the game was going to be like; speak for yourself. I was open to whatever but I will admit that the bar has been set by other MMOs and at minimum any new game that comes out from a big developer MUST IMO at least meet the bar, and really should be raising the bar with their new offering.
Lowering the bar is no way to release a new game unless you desire this kind of publicity.
Games are the same as they always were, and like always the VAST MAJORITY of players are happy with them.
It's the people who are incapable of actually thinking and realizing what games will be like that are the problem, you seem to be one of those people.
And no, I will never stfu as you so elegantly put it.

Exactly, I hadn't have the need to read any quest at ffxiv from few hours of gameplay except one. Just press location info and boom a mark on your map that tells you where to go. And trust me if there are ANY quests that you actually have to look into, there will be this site a month after the release of the game that tells you where to go without EVER having to read anything again. Quest helper was ALSO a plugin for WoW until some months ago blizzard decided to inject a similar system in their game. And Silok, you said that you won't ever read a site that tells you were to go or use a similar plugin on your other post. Well, guess what, you won't need to, because the game already has a system that says exactly where you have to go.

arghh mate it has nothing to do with bots, thottbot is just an information DB that was created for WoW, its just a place where you can find all sorts of info pretty much every MMO has a website where you can go to find stuff out FF wont be any different, no one will read quest texts and barely anyone even likes them, I believe I saw an interview some time ago where they talked about how long the average MMO gamer spends reading quest text and it was around 3-5 seconds, games should invest in chats, voice acting and events where you see the story unfold instead of having to read some static text about how the NPC is so sad and crying while he is standing there like a statue.
"Whoa! This game has such incredible quests and puzzle to solve. I am dying to play it, let me just grab the walkthrough"... /cry

Except not. Guild Wars 2 is ACTUALLY polished, and will be ready for release, unlike so many MMORPGs have failed to do before them. The first Guild Wars had a ... just about flawless release, and was a rather large success. Taking that into account, and considering how much more well-funded ArenaNet is this time around...and, well, the videos we've seen, you can bet your ass Guild Wars 2 will be quite a hit, as if it already wasn't at Gamescom and PAX.
I've been in FFXIV's beta since July 12th and have extensively tested it for myself. Square Enix has convinced me that they're completely unwilling to listen to the feedback given to them by, not only western beta testers, but their own Japanese testers as well. They just do what they want to do, without regards to the players; you know, the people who make the game successful in the first place. Final Fantasy XIV will flop even harder than Star Trek Online, and gives Age of Conan a good name. Anyone failing to understand why -- especially after playing the beta for themselves -- can go right ahead and waste their money. You'll find out soon enough. Just promise me you'll learn the difference between a polished and unpolished game.
Whilst your predicting the future, can you let us know the lottery numbers for next week? Thanks

You know, while he may be exaggerating a bit, his prediction isn't really unjustified / absurd. I know a lot of people want this game to do well (myself included), but if you've played through the betas it's really hard to believe that. You have to be borderline delusional to think this game is doing just fine.

You must have missed the fact that ffxiv has a "where-to-go" system integrated in their quests.
Everyone notice how FF XIV's score here has dramatically dropped since OB? It is disappointing that this game didn't turn out to be what many of us hoped it would be.
Now I need to know, what is the next MMORPG in development to start following and get excited about?
It is just logical. No MMO works for everyone and when an open beta starts the people who the game really isn't for realize that.
Before a game enters beta many people hope for something the game isn't, happens all the time. People tend to not research as well as they should and sometimes the devs are a lot more fuxxy than they should have been.
Also they notice bugs and similar issues that they fear will be in the released game and might take a while to iron out, like client crashes to mention one thing.
Besides, remember how the evening before X-mas felt like a kid, in some cases that were better than any gifts in themselves. MMO players tend to a be a bit the same.
I am pretty sure that the same thing happens to most MMOs. Better than what happened to WAR which most people loved for 3 weeks and started to hate after that.
I tried the open beta and I was disappointed. Graphics were great, even the beginning cutscenes were very cool. But it felt like a console to pc port. The game was floaty, felt like there was NO responsiveness at all. Plus after the cutscenes it kind of just drops you into the "adventuring" room. Then you kind of just walk around aimlessly. I cannot stand games that just leave you completely aimless... give me something to grab onto and at least get started with...

I am pretty sure that the same thing happens to most MMOs. Better than what happened to WAR which most people loved for 3 weeks and started to hate after that.
The only thing people were hoping for was a good, well-thought out, polished game. Client crashes, server issues and bugs are one thing, but if mechanically or fundamentally the game is not ready, then the players will notice. I'm sure if people used their noggin, they could easily determine the feeling of a cheap game, and the feeling of a well-funded game.
Most players know that WAR wasn't a very polished game at all. If you install and play now, it still feels like you're playing Alpha. When it released, the animations were still incredibly choppy, and there were even entire maps that were missing from cities. Literally, when you opened your map, it gave a message to the extent of, "Not available yet." Really? Is that what a finished product is supposed to look like?
I haven't given up hope. But most developers have absolutely no clue how to make an MMORPG. They figure, "Oh, well...two years should be fine." For a quick buck. If that, maybe. You'd end up losing more than you make for profit. Square Enix just disgusts me, and they deserve to go bankrupt.
How do you think the crafting and combat should be? What are your ideas?
Good point. How much better it would be if we could limit our comments to things that are actually substantive rather than just trading insults. This goes both directions.
I am still trying to get into it. Still not sure if I will cancel my preorder or not. I have a friend who is a 3 year vet of FFXI advocating valiantly for it. I do want to enjoy the game with him.
That said, If I could have SE change only one thing it would be to simply use a mouse click on inert environment to move much as is done with L2, PWI or Aion if you have it turned on. Mouse clicks on the environment simply do nothing. It would require no other changes in the interface design to pull off. Controller and keyboard users would never even know about it. This one small thing would go a long way to saving the mouse users out there. To go along with that, though not quite as essential, I would also have double clicks on npcs and mobs do an auto approach simply because this appears to be standard for mouse movement in Asian MMOs along with the click to move in the environment.
I would add more help and tutorial elements. I know that it is beta so these may simply be missing for now. I also know that the game is designed for exploration but you shouldn't have to explore to figure out how to play the game. You should be exploring for the story elements. I understand that this goes to design philosophy but I think they may be taking it to an unreasonable extreme. An example might be fishing. No explaination given for what that little meter means and what depth does. I want to figure out how best to use these tools not simply how to use them by guessing. A little tutorial from the vendor would be nice. How do we learn how to really fish. From out dads, or possibly from an experienced friend. Why can't they have an old fisherman down by the river to help you with this? Why wouldn't the shop owner know about that old man?
At the very least they need a tutorial on how to control the interface. What keyboard or controller buttons do what.
They also need a default gamepad layout for a ps3 and for a 360 controller. Having the gamepads do nothing by default is absolutely rediculously stupid for a game that is so obviously based on the console interface.
The last thing I would change would be to have the guildleves run on a 24 hr basis rather than 48. I find 48 to be too long but that is just a preference.
As for those complaining about there not being enough content, I am going to give SE the benefit of the doubt. I think it is a matter of understanding where they come from. Most of the FF titles are console adventure games. They are based on exploring a storyline. I guess I can understand Squenix not wanting to let that out with the beta. That is, after all, their bread and butter. It is also why the game is so heavy on exploring without being given any direction. I guess the question to be asked is if such a manner of story telling fits well with MMOs. In this regard the game is definitly designed to be played by FFXI vets. That is fine but those vets are already a lock to play this game. Putting some thought into where a FF nub may be coming from might have been a good idea.
But on the other hand, Squenix cannot rightly complain if people walk away from this beta thinking that they game will be so limited at release. They have given no indication that more stuff will be there in the future. Given how the industry uses open betas it is not unreasonable for people to assume they are essentially a dress rehearsal. You basically release the game as it is at the time it went gold and will show up in people's boxes. If you want to do it differently, that is fine, but the responsiblity lies with you to at least issue a press release if you don't want people to make bad assumptions. Squenix needs to learn to communicate.
I personally think people are leaving and hate it due to the stupidly high PC reqs. I hear people bashing them all the time saying,"Oh just buy a new computer wow noob." Some people cant afford to spend $1300 to build (not buy from a store/ website, otherwise you can double that price) a pc that would run it very well. Add a patcher that takes 4 days to download the client and patches. I know," well why don't you just torrent it?" Yes you can, but you shouldn't HAVE too. it hurts the company because people see this and have to do that just to get the game in a timely manner. I know it's beta but people that are trying this see the patcher and rank low scores. It puts a bad taste in player's mouth. Don't get me wrong I like what i have played so far, just speaking for one of the reasons why IN MY OPINION, it's droping.
Let me see, how have the threads by the masses gone....

Of course you could look at those games populatiosn today and realize that yes they under preformed their expectations (Not mine other than WAR but i knew months b4 gold that it would be rather poor). The Issue is dev.s are making bad /weak games. Sure they talk a good game (aion) but they rarely deliver.
And many people still like aoc, war, etc., etc. Still they desireve they drop in hype/rating.
All the drop in hype means is that the haters on the ff14 forums had somethign correct; or at least in the eyes of the "masses".
At that point do they stop being haters and move on to realists (at least the rational ones)?
PS. more people have issues playing sc2 custom games (not the fault of clinet i think) that ff14 from my circle of game buddies (and some don't have great comps). They do get fps spikes and jumps but its still plyable.

Despite the criticisms about Vanguard and AoC when they came out both of them had incredibly satisfying PvE play throughout the player's advancement and it was really their endgame or pvp imbalance issues that hurt their population. FF XIV, however, seems lacking from level one. I think that's the cause of the immediate plunge. And this game is not in beta form as we all know that this experience is 99% of what we will see our first 10-20 levels at launch.
the cause of the immediate plunge is obviously due to the keyboar/mouse issues and people not willing to use a controller.
I admit If i didnt have a gamepad to play with, I would have quit after those first 20 minutes of fumbling with my keyboard and mouse. Luckily I decided to try it with a gamepad before I quit. The game was in no doubt made for a gamepad.
This is simply not true in my experience. Keyboard + mouse is the BESt way to play. If you don't think so then you (a) have not been in a big group fighting strong monsters or (b) have not been in a middle sized group fighting multiple monsters.
They only thing the keyboard + mouse does poorly is open menus (its just much easier on the controller). AS for targeting, combat, selecting abilities , etc the K+M dominates the controller. Solo the controller is quite nice however.
I am telling you gusy , wait until you actually have to select targets.. keyboard + mouse is the way to go.

Quests are shallow, you collect them from one guy, and hand them over to a big giant crystal, how entertaining.
If quest where given by NPC's in town of difrent needs I might care doing them, like a fisherman in need of wood for his boat or something.
Now its just one dude on a counter, collect some grind quest repeat add nausium.
It fucking blows.
Do yourself a favour and read the open Beta Guide.
Have you not noticed the text of some NPC - like they DO want you to do something - but guess what its BETA.
Also alot of these posters seem to forget that the game will come with a thing called a "manual" . I ask you where is the In-game tutorial for all the FF console games????
Core i5 13600KF, BeQuiet Pure Loop FX 360, 32gb DDR5-6000 XPG, WD SN850 NVMe ,PNY 3090 XLR8, Asus Prime Z790-A, Lian-Li O11 PCMR case (limited ed 1045/2000), 32" LG Ultragear 4k Monitor, Logitech G560 LightSync Sound, Razer Deathadder V2 and Razer Blackwidow V3 Keyboard
I, too, had really high hopes for this game.. I've been following it for a while, finally got into the beta when OB came around. The game looks and feels like it has potential, but I just see too many problems at the moment. SE is notorious for ignoring their customers, they feel as though they know what's best for their game.. Now, I believe they have to draw the line at some things, but one of the biggest killing features for me was when I found out about the 48 hour guild leve restriction and the exp cap per week.
About the exp penalty, I've yet to figure out how it works exactly, I've read some places that say it's pretty much you start the week with rested exp, then by hour 15, you're down to normal exp.. Most, however, seem to be saying it's you have 8 hours of normal exp, then 7 hours of gradually reducing exp down to 0% which means regardless of efforts, you will be unable to advance at all.
The latter is what I believe SE is doing and that, coupled with the leve restrictions, is really what did it in for me. If i'm going to be paying close to $15 a month, I expect to get entertainment that I paid for. If I enjoy playing my conjurer and feel as though I could party on it more than 30 hours in 1 week, then that should be a viable option. I understand SE wants us to switch classes because the abilities might be useful, but honestly, for the beginning of the game, I want to pick one class, play that, and then offer info about the class and recieve info about the other classes. After finding out which abilities seem tempting, maybe I'll spend 30 hours or so the next week playing Thaumaturge to get said abilities.
This is what I expect out of every game, the ability to play to my hearts content. I don't need SE trying to act like my mommy and telling me that I've been levelling a specific character for too long, I'm grown up and I can decide what my limitation are. After all, I'm paying them, it's not the other way around.
Another problem I've just recently seen was that the DoM classes are levelling at about half the speed as the DoM classes while in a party. They are recieving less SP towards their class level because they can't perform enough actions. This, right here, could pose another problem. DoW classes are going to outlevel DoM classes and the top DoW classes are going to wind up stuck soloing because no healers are within their level range. This, imho, is just poor design. In every other mmo, whilst in a group, everyone advances at practically the same speed, save rested exp or something of those sorts.
I really think SE favors melee classes after seeing what happened to all mages in FFXI. With their new MP management system, I believe they solved the problem of resting mp for mages, but for SP to be determined upon how much damage you do, how many actions you perform, etc, the stronger classes are going to advance faster than the weaker classes.
I really did have high hopes for this game, but other than the graphics and music, the game has nothing really new to offer. The menu system, I think, is worse than it's predeccors. The chat box is much more basic than it's predecessor. Hell, everything just seems like it's worse off than FFXI at this point in time.
Before casting final judgement upon this game, I am going to wait a few weeks after launch to see if things have cleared up, how things are after launch day, and then make my final decision on whether to purchase the game or not. Like I said in the beginning, I believe it has potential to be a great game, but right now, it just feels like it's lacking.

The correct answer is if you want a FFXIV discussion with people that have the same opinion as you on the game you will have to leave this site and go to a dedicated ffxiv site.
/cry
Do you get a walkthrough on every game you play? , no.
Is your choice to do or not to in SE mmo´s, i meet people on ffxi who didnt even had a pc to begin with. No really. How they did thins ? exploring , try and error. fun times.
Hell even the SE official guides were nothin more than vague maps and spawn points for mobs, nothin else, so you get an idea XD.
Uldah, comon... was my post looking like a serious post to you ? Should I have put <sarcasm></sarcasm> around it or would that have been too obvious? lol
Thanks
"When people don't know much about something, they tend to fill in the blanks the way they want them to be filled in. They are almost always disappointed." - Will Wright
All die, so die well.
