will final fantasy XIV be worth my wallet?

surstromingsurstroming Member UncommonPosts: 151

Hey, I'm a heavy mmorpg player who enjoy PvE the most and I pretty much ignore PvP

and I've noticed that when I'm having the most fun on mmorpgs its during instances or other group forced challenges.

I like fast paced games A.K.A action/mmorpgs like ddo, tabula rasa, phantasy star. etc etc, I can only enjoy normal mmorpgs by being a healer or tank.

I was thinking of giving the new FF a try but before that I  would wanna ask the beta testers of their point of view of this game.

but the thing that bothers me is it I'm gonna make the same mistake I made on Aion.

so will FF be worth the weight of my wallet or should I wait for the other upcoming mmos?

Well first I would recommend doing a Google search for the FFXIV Benchmark and see how well your computer does.  If you can get better then a 1500 then I would say there's a pretty good chance of you enjoying FFXIV.  I would enjoy the beta more if my computer could handle it better.  But my computer isn't that great so I wasn't really expecting much out of it.

Here's what I'm running if you want to compare

AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition (which I can't seem to O.C. computer locks up every time I try =)

    MSi NF750-G55 Motherboard

XFX GeForce 210 (needs to be upgraded)

    G.SKILL ECO Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Model F3-10666CL7D-4GBECO

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (I think this needs to be replaced as well... would be nice to get a RAID 0 setup or SSD to replace it)

    1) go to the dedicated FFXIV forum:

    http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/forum/932/General-Discussion.html

    2) start reading all open threads about opinions, reviews and mechanic discussions on the beta

    3) disregard all opinions from those that fail to even name a bad point about the game, and seem more focused on tearing a new one to posters who critic the game (also known as fanbois)

    4) disregard all opinions from those that fail to even name a good point about the game and seem more focused on tearing a new one to posters who like the game (also known as haters)

    5) ????

    6)  wait for it....

I haven't played the game but just based on some of the forum posts on the FFXIV forums, I would definitely wait until some reviews come out before buying it.  There is a lot of negative opinion about the game floating around right now.  I have serious doubts that it will be worth it at launch.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

  • AIMonsterAIMonster Member UncommonPosts: 2,059

I'd go with no, based off a few things you said.

First, you mentioned you have the most fun doing instances or group encounters.  FFXIV at the moment doesn't have huge benefit for party members or group level encounters.  You'll find yourself soloing through most of the game unless you have a steady linkshell who wants to group just for the sake of grouping.  This may change later down the line in both level and in later content patches, but for now it's a very solo oriented game.

Second, you like fast paced games, which FFXIV is anything but.  The combat is significantly slower than most MMOs (though faster than FFXIV) and the UI is cumbersome and will slow you down further.

You mentioned that you also like to play a healer or tank.  While FFXIV does kind of have healer and tank roles, a lot of classes can fill them and there isn't really a set job for either.  The closest thing I could think of is a Gladiator for tanking.  Right now enmity is borked (it may be fixed) and it's difficult to actually tank and you'll find it difficult to heal for the same reason (casting a single heal pulls everything on you, with almost no means of a tank being able to pull it off you).  Most classes are self sufficient and don't require heavy healing to be successful either.

You also mentioned Aion as a mistake.  Well, FFXIV currently has a lot of problems Aion had (it's grindy, doesn't really appear to be much to do outside of crafting and grinding).

A few reasons you may want to play FFXIV:

    1.  If you are a fan of Final Fantasy series (especially FFXI).

    2.  If you want to play many classes without having to reroll a new character everytime.

    3.  If you love crafting.  Crafting is a big part of the game.

    4.  If you have a powerful system and want to enjoy the graphics, environments, and animations.

    5.  If you are willing to wait for content updates and bug fixes that will likely improve the game greatly (as early content updates and fixes did for FFXI).

    6.  If you want to play something new.  (FFXIV is different than most traditional MMOs)

    7.  If you enjoy a set storyline for your character and well written dialogue.

FFXIV isn't a very fast paced game, in my opinion. At all, really.

And yes, make sure your system can run it by testing a benchmark, because that game is HEA. VY.

Otherwise just read up on some reviews, see if you can find a free trial or something, and go from there.

If you don't care about whether or not PvP is included then your set there, XIV is PvE oriented

Lots of group content, SE's trying to give players even more of an incenitive to group from what I hear.

Not sure if i'd say its fast paced, no autoattacking, attacks are used with 1-9, but fights are longer than DDO/TR/Lotro/etc.

I'd say you should try open beta yourself and see what you think, right now the main concern I have for the game is the UI lag, which has been improved since OB started, but still exists somewhat. Some don't like the guild leve system as it is atm, but that comes down to personal tastes.

If your really unsure just wait until the game comes out and see what professional reviewers think of it, and so we have full access to the content they've removed from beta.

try open beta and see for your self.

Just find another source to download the game eg hotfile

    cause ffxiv patcher takes forever

If your wallet has nothing in it then yes it is worth it.

  • xuitonxuiton Member Posts: 133

From playing the beta, i find hardly any good points to this game. If some could inform me that would be great. There are plently of negatives i could paint. But i don't want to be seen as a hater, when i'm not.

I waited for this game since it was announced. Mainly i'm sick and bored of the solo friendly games. I want to group, however this game punishes you for grouping currently. How on earth they could not fix this simple XP issue so late is beyond me. I doubt it will be fixed by launch. So will be forced to play solo as most players.

I find the combat too boring to grind mobs solo. The leves are ok but we all know you are limited with those, so grinding mobs is a must to level. So if you could grind these mobs in a group such as you can in FF11, this would making leveling more enjoyable, yet nobody will want to do that since groupins is broken.

Someone please point out the pros of this game as i'm struggling to find any. Besides good gfx.

Sounds like you're saying to "disregard" the opinions of people who have played the game.

c'mon, there must be some honest and open minded people amongs the crowd of haters and fanbois...I mean....at least one, right?

  • SnoepieSnoepie Member UncommonPosts: 485

well to be honest im playing/trying almost every mmorpg on the market.

The grafhics of this game are reallty nice.. but the combat is really and i mean really dull.. if you like fast action mmorpg this is defenetly not the game for..

I fall asleep during combat.. if you like pve i suggest that you keep your money and start playing LOTR online.

Lotr is the best pve online game atm.. according to me. everything just fits and the lore is great.. also lotr have nice community.. downside is its not fast paste.. but compare to Final it is...

I am not playing lotr online because i am big fan of pvp and the best hardcore pvp you find is in darkfall. but with the f2p coming up i will go and play lotr for the pve..

Again keep your money in your pocket.. only the fans of Final will play this.. and not the casual looking for the best exprience mmo players

Fast paste mmorpg --> google kindom under fire 2.. tip!

I think it is worth playing at launch as you get that special launch atmosphere and grouping will occur as people look to make game friends and achieve game goals. More content will be available and will be patched in post-launch. There is an argument lets wait till PS3 launch, and it can be valid as it will be a great way to play XIV, and there will be more content, but you miss the launch atmosphere. Cannot lose really, the game will have two launches, and will be peachy to play no matter what your choice.

  • UldahUldah Member Posts: 162

If you really like PVE only games as much as i do, ffxi is the best pve game out there atm, content based. The problem with ffxi is that is old,and is not friendly with people with lite time and lacks solo play.

FFXIV at start will not have a lot to do but exp, just like ffxi did at start but way before you reach cap there will be tons of content pve based, but the MAIN diference between 11 and 14 is that you can exp solo at a very high pace. On 11 you couldnt , they added some FoV crap that was supoused to help but never as fast as a party.

My advice if you really like strong pve games is to definetly get the game and come with open mind about controls etc, you will learn to love it, and most of all be patient.FF´s MMos arent for the impatient or weak of mind.Find a good linkshell, start growing up together. You will definetly have the best PvE experience you could ever ask for.

Also , plese take note theres nothin coming for heavy group PvErs in the rest of AAA games coming up.GW2 looks like a solo pvp orientated game.Terra got frogster involved , so that means cash shops down the road.what else, star wars  wont be here for like 2-3 years down the road, so nobady really know whats is gonna be like, idk what else is there atm ?Not much for heavy group Pvers, so you should definetly give this game a chance.

it is a fact that they will not be updating the game after release until the ps3 a launch. The cheap bastards even said this update would be free.. wow.

  • ProfRedProfRed Member UncommonPosts: 3,495

I am an avid MMORPG player and I have found that almost every AAA and many non AAA mmorpg's are all worth the box price.  There is something fun in each one, and maybe I just love launches, but I believe almost every MMO is easily worth the box price alone.  If devs didn't lie I wouldn't regret spending money on any of them either.

If you have no preconceptions or hype and you go into an MMO trying to find the fun and just see how long it lasts any one of them will be worth your wallet.

xuiton - They will be updating and patching it constantly.  They just won't be releasing a major content patch.  5-6 months is not unreasonable for releasing a large content patch after launch.  1-2 of them per year is pretty standard with most MMO's.

updates/patches = / = expansions, and that is at what they are refering by "free", a "free expansion".

best advice right there, it's still in open beta not a better time than now to try the game out without having to dedicate 60 bucks. Mind you I personally still haven't decided if i'll play and i've been playing for a few days now.

  • YauchyYauchy Member UncommonPosts: 298

Yes, it is worth it (if you have a good rig, love PVE, and enjoy a great story/game world).

It has its faults like any game, but it is quite fun (even in beta).

As long as your pc can run the game then you'll get yourself a great story and a ton of pve goodness here.

how is adding a action house 6 months later a free expansion? Oh dear please go red up before you post. No updates for 6 months on a new mmo? the PC players are just paying for beta. GO play the current open beta and see for yourself. If more than 1000 players on the server, horrible lag.

what is there to do in beta, please explain to me. Apart from doing some leve's every 2 days that take a few minutes to complete. Go solo grind some mobs?

You obviously haven't bothered with the open beta either. You can't report bugs or problems. We're 2 weeks from launch and their is 0 content.

  • ProfRedProfRed Member UncommonPosts: 3,495

Plenty of people can still post bugs and issues, and I guarantee you 100% of the problems in the game are known and on their feedback or bug forums.  There is plenty of content I guess you just haven't been looking?  It seems to me like you just don't like the game.  Why not move along and avoid pointless internet emotions.
