LF help/linkshell (EU)

in Final Fantasy XIV

Well, I'm new to this FF universe and I feel quite lost. So far I've tried out 2 servers, Palamecia and Kashuan and I must say this game has a horrid community, noone talking or bothering to say anything in chat, except for the occasional gold spammer.

 

I'm undecided as to whether I will purchase the game or not, since many things are yet unclear to me. Anyone from EU playing and doesn't mind if I join him or someone who got a linkshell willing to take members on probation?
