WoW has become a reflection of American society in general.....
Pretty much this. God I hate being American sometimes...
But it's not just Warcraft that gets asshats, it's all games. They're only getting more popular, and with more players comes more dumbasses. Warcraft isn't the worst though. Call of Duty has to have the worst community of people ever assembled. It really is filled to the brim with racist, homophobic, sexist 12 year olds.
Parents these days just need to sit down with their kids, and beat them.
I would have switched to the Latin American servers and struggled along in my bad spanish if Blizzard would have let me, just to get away from my fellow Americans.
I will pay $20 a month for an enforced Adults Only server or game rating, if a game company ever figures out how to really enforce it.
Any parent who doesn't want to sit down with their kids, and beat them, can pay me $20 to do it!
Oh, and parents, you slobbering morons, don't let your kids watch Southpark! (I happen to love Southpark, but I told my kid long ago that he can't watch it until he's old enough to know when that sort of humor is and is not appropriate. Hint: It almost never is, especially online!)
Unfortunately, it isn't *just* the kids that are wrecking the game. There are plenty of adults that are just as racist, homophobic and sexist. One of the bigger headaches running a guild in WoW is dealing with the people and their outright scary ideas of what is and is not acceptable behavior. At least I could rationalize some of the kids behavior (had a couple in my guild)...but some of the worst people I dealt with were well into their 30s (don't worry, plenty of 20-somethings have their issues too).
It's not like 90% of the players have issues. But when the population is 11 million, even 10% means more than a million of them pulling their stunts, poor behavior, or simple rudeness. The problems occur because the 9 well-behaved, quiet ones sit in the background while the 1 problem-child (figurative not literal) goes to town...and guess where your attention will go?
The same problems occur in real life. The difference is that we, as a society, decided to pay for a police force to keep the nonsense down a notch. As several others have pointed out, Blizzard has no such incentive...as long as the money rolls in, who cares how many people get hurt. Hmm, sounds a lot like the tobacco industry, doesn't it?
Really it is a problem of there being no consequences, and a major contributing factor of that is anonymity, people do and say things in games and just on the net in general that they would never say in real life.
and comments like "kids" and "12-year olds" isn't much better than a lot of the other slander that happens, you would likely be amazed how many of the worst offenders are adults, and how many of the well-spoken polite people are indeed 12 years old.
I love America and 99.5% of Americans I have met in RL, but US wow is the worst...by a MASSIVE margin in my experience of playing EU wow since vanill and US wow since WOTLK release date. The US isn't worse in terms of idiotic behaviour and trolling, but defo worse in terms of racism and really vicious and malicious name-calling.
So there is some cultural differences in how anti-social behaviour manifests in games imo. Sorry USA, but I cant help but think that you have a a bigger problem or issue with racism than EU societies do.
Now I don't see this problem going away in wow or any mmorpg until the game autnjorities themselves take responisbilty for policing this. I used to call out racists or malicious types in global chat channels for their behaviour and I kpet it up for years but became exhausted with the uselessness of it and the constant abuse I recieved as a result. I also reported on

Ditto.. After a couple years it just becomes exhausting.. Someone needs to police the chat channels a lot better.. Maybe the start handing out suspensions like candy when you see people finding new ways of typing the N word and other TOS violations and surpassing the chat filters.. Could you imagine what would happen if Blizzard and other companies actually policed their communities.. If you see someone type something like " I want to fork u n the a**".. and POOF, instant suspend them for a week first offence and a month EACH time afterwords.. You would either clean up chat very quick or find many suspended.. However we all know that suspended acounts = less revenue, so we know what that means.. Nothing gets done for the most part..
true....i just played a fiew random groups and there was this guys who had a guild named "i did your mom".......looking for another game to play now as we speak....guess i just needed a drop to spill the bucket if you know what i mean.
too bad blizz is allowing al this.... thinking about going back to vanguard...smaller but closer community.

This to a tee..
Adults are really the wrose offenders in this catagory and it is rampant in ALL online games. (where did that insult Ur 12 come frome anyways I mean its ALWAYS a 12 year old isnt it?,, next time add some flavor and call em 13 and a half year olds sheesh)
My fav right now is the trend where everyone calls everything Ghey or gay I end up asking them so your saying (insert inanimate object here) had same relations sex??? wow that is pic worthy! and they usually shut up.
it really does come down to a problem of no consequences to anyone on the net for the things spoken, it looks cool to act an ass online I guess.....
Trying to clean up World of Warcraft's community would be like trying to clean up a Brothel's community. They are designed to attract the bottom end of the totem pole, because that is what makes them the most money ( the majority of people ).
agreed, i stuck around for my friends on my server mostly, but once they all left for various reasons (marriage, kids etc.) it was really me and the one friend who originally got me into wow. but our lifelong friendship couldn't outweigh the rampant, blatent garbage on a daily basis i was seeing. the last straw was as i was in the AH one day and some low level who was just fresh to the game i imagine whipered me and asked for a ragefire chasm run, i normally would have done it (for a small fee of course lol...or free if i really know the guy or have time to kill.) but i was pressed for time i was really just slapping up an auction before work. after i respectfully declined the young man or woman or grown-up child or whatever decided that instead of just saying "kthnxbai" decided to go on a tirade of "well why the f%^k not?" after i told him/her why "that's just B.S. you're just like the rest of the filthy ni%%ers around here who want a hand out but won't help somebody else." now, even if i WASN'T black (which i am btw) it would have still made me cringe. i immedaitely put him on my ignore list and since he was the ONLY one on it at the time (i usually put the over agressive spammers on it but i know they're gone after a few hours) i went to work and waited until i had enogh time to set-up my co-workers laptop and log in to file a report and get a GM ticket going. so i'm waiting about 45 minutes to about an hour and finally i glance over and see a gm whisper to me, i told him what transpired and gave him the guys toon name and then said something to the effect of "even if i wasn't a black dude that's just some vile shit to say in general. pardon my french." the GM told me to hang on.....5 minutes later he comes back. "we've had other complaints about the person in question. we've questioned him as well, he denys saying such things." i responded "ok, so i wasted an hour to lie?" he says "i'm not saying you lied, but had you hit a report on his name after it happened then filed the ticket instead of hitting ignore and waiting, there might be more to be done about it." to which i said "so you're going to do nothing?" he responded "he will be temporarily banned from his account, unless you can e-mail a screenshot of the incident in which case he might suffer a permannt ban." by the end i had gotten the runaround so much i finally said "the way this is being handled is just rediculous. don't bother with a temporary or a perman ban i'm just gonna hold back my 60 bucks every six months for a while." that was about 8 months ago. my friend who is still on said he foot the bill just to use the toons, which i've let him do until i decide what really to do, but i've uninstalled it from my computer, threw out all my guides and original discs i had to install it. so in essence i've already decided...but i put too much effort into the toons to let them go to waste or just be deleted. my point is i think the guy was i guess handleing it to the best of his ability, and MAYBE i should have made a screenshot, but really that stuff goes on in trade 24/7 and the gm told me they'd heard something about that toon before, but they'd rather keep the inflow of money over a balanced and fair community. yeah this is probably a giant run on sentence, but that's besides the point. point is.....if you can find cool people to be around in that game, god bless and godspeed...i'm just going to stick to lotro f2p for now and get FFXIV because i know either one of those doesn't attract teens or adults with underdeveloped minds.
I feel your pain, today more than ever. I returned to WoW after a nine-month hiatus. I knew the community was going downhill when I left, but I guess being busy raiding with my guild I didn't notice it as much. Flash forward to today, guild is mostly inactive, friends have xferred servers or stopped playing, and I am looking for a new home. I searched upwards of 20 servers trying to find a decent community. I - was - appalled. When did trade channel become a free-for-all? When did it become impossible to find a guild that even has a decent policy against extreme profanity, sexism, and racism? Am I that old-fashioned to think that people can have a conversation without littering every sentence with expletives?
So last week I think I find a guild and join it. It's on another server so in the meantime I am cleaning up my inventory on my main, preparing to xfer. I'm leveling up an alt on this new server and I start to tell this new guild how I had a problem with a group today, with someone who verbally attacked me because he thought I wiped the group. It was preposterous nerdrage, lines of lines of cursing and anti-semitic stuff (apparently calling someone a "Jew" is the new insult, replacing "gay"). So we're tossing ideas back and forth and then suddenly the GM starts reaming me out in front of the guild, saying the discussion was heading towards 'politics'. Say what? I was complaining about how bad the community has become and this is politics? So he says people in the guild are getting heated. They are? Why, because I don't like being cursed at? So after he chastises me like a child, THEN he goes to whispers and tells me he is concerned because they have military guys in the guild and they may curse and he doesn't want to worry about me reporting them. First of all, in my last guild we had plenty of military guys and they were the politest guys I ever played with. Second of all, when does complaining about massive amounts of profanity and racism and sexism translate into being a priss who's going to report everyone who says anything worse than 'heck'? Needless to say, I agreed it was probably not the guild for me and /gquit.
I still can't believe how bad WoW has become. Remember it used to be that there were a few people that were disruptive or offensive, and the community reported them? Now the norm is bad behavior, and everyone turns off the public channels, and if you report someone you are deemed a trouble-maker or a priss.
Well, at this point it's ruining my fun and immersion so the end is here for me. I'm going back to LOTRO until GW2 or TOR. Since Blizz doesn't care to enfore their own policies then I don't care to give them any more of my money.

I have to say that having been gone for a while myself, that there are a bunch of chuckeheads in trade as well as the overall difficulty of finding a mature gaming guild. I keep it close knit and Mainly play with two other people.

But regardless of who it is, Blizzard needs to start handing out bans. And I don't mean suspensions or chat bans. I mean real, no more WoW account for you perma-bans. Because obviously, this community isn't going to police itself, and it's a major factor in why I'm not planning on returning for Cataclysm.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
Join adult gaming guild with high standards. Make lots of friends in guild. Leave all general chat.
Problem solved.
To be honest though, the worst "community" I have seen was my recent return to Age of Conan. Apparently the MA rating gives everyone the incentive and desire to act like and speak like a X-rated movie. I left all forms of public chat in my first 5 minutes.
Its not just WOW, its all games now.
Yeah, but WoW brought all these people into the MMO community. That is the worst thing about the game. Before, the communities were more tame, and tended to be more mature, so a dumb person couldn't spout all the filth without being blacklisted by most players in the game, or being banned rather quickly.
These people have such freedome in WoW to be the way they are, that when they join new games, they instantly start to ruin the community there.
Thanks for mainstreaming MMOs WoW, community wise, and all this watered down crap we call MMOs now adays. (granted there are some good games, and some good communities, but majority, no.)
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.
