How does gear work?

1. Where does/will gear come from?

So far I've received a few pieces from leves, but that is it. How did FFXI work?

2. Basically wearing starter gear at ~10 and seem to handle the content fine. Once gear becomes available will it be too easy?

On a side note, is there any vendor loot, or is it all crafting related?

Thanks!

    Good question!

From what iv seen in CB and OB is crafting is going to be a big part of this game.  Chances are a month or so after launch people will be known for who crafts what, and how much they charge for prices etc.....

Gear vendors will most likely be pretty pricey, however that may help set the price range for certain types of gil.

Leves will also offer gear as a reward, so as the harder they get the better you will get in return.

Hope it helps and happy hunting!

It's possible that some of the lower ranked gear may be available through drops, but from my understanding, gear will mostly come from Crafting.

    Not sure about point 2.

There are vendors selling some certain materials at the market area (I only know of Hawker in Limsa Lominsa, I don't know the area in other Cities, but they are there). You will be able to buy all the tools and a decent amount of materials (at a price).

Player driven economy.  Even at level 1-2 goldsmithing you can craft stuff for slots that can't be found at vendors.  I'm curious how they will balance drops vs. crafted goods in endgame, however; considering the importance they seem to be placing on crafted goods/services.

Crafted goods will likely be much better, given the wide range of Material Quality that you can use, and the Max Quality that you have managed to generate during the crafting process (through the mini-game)

yeah and if FFXI is any indicator they are not afraid to make 1337 drops crafting mats that in turn are used to craft some uber item.

When end game gets patched in, I personally expect it to run along the lines of FFXI. Some crafting mats drop, and some rare ex drops, thats my guess, I just dont see it all being gear drops or all being crafted.

Even in FFXI the econmy was strongly driven by crafters or NM drops. You really never bought vendored gear to wear. When we (na) started ffxi the japanese had already made alot of gear and the prices had balanced out to a normal range.

    Thanks for the info guys.

I'll have to learn what items that drop are useful for crafters I guess. =)
