Actually the graphics design for WURM online isn't it? Amazing textures overhaul btw, I'm surprised you haven't commented much on FFXIV's artwork.
It’s absolutely stunning. But it’s using EQ2 era techniques, so I’m confused as to the performance issues on very capable machines.
My sadness comes from the fact is FF, its beautiful, but there is no content, this wont change magically with live.

Definitely not a bad idea, there would be a lot of backlash if the game didn't have one. I appreciate any mmo game releasing an mmo for open beta, and my thanks goes out to SE. I personally am still on the fence about this game, i'd like to see how the group play feels and especially some instances or dungeons.

For a person that refuses to explore, to find hidden contents, you seem to complain a lot. No, they will not hold your hand and show you the contents. You have to go find them.
Did you check out the dungeons yet? Bosses? You think guildleve and the tiny fraction of the main story line are all contents there are? Duh, There are 3 to 5 dungeons per Nation map. You just have to find them.

I found them, and soloed them. There is no fun in this game other than looking at nice graphics. Just a solo-player game with a weird UI. You do not even need a group for the dungeons. That is good, because the terrible combat system is driving away all healers anyway...
I always hear that there is so much content and fun that all the so-called pointless haters just didn't find. But nobody tells me, where is all this content and fun?
Yes bad idea, as people don't seem to understand what the BETA is for. (but then again maybe its a good idea, as its not those kind of peoplk I would want to be playing alongside)
But I can't think of any other way they can stress test servers, they would just get slated for non-stable servers at launch. Maybe this was the lesser of 2 evils.

In the game at release is where its at, check your Sqaure folders, hundreds are deliberatly empty and the BETA is 6gb short of the full version.

If this is true, then SE is completely ignorant. Open Beta has morphed into a "trial" over the last number of years, and mmos are judged based upon the performance of the game during this phase. SE should know this, if they learn from other's mistakes, and make available as much of the actual game as possible during their open beta phase. It doesn't matter what the literal definition of beta is, it doesn't even matter what an open beta is supposed to be. What is important is how potential customers view open beta and how the game is perceived based upon that view.
If they truly left out 6GB of content during an open beta phase, within a month of release, then they deserve all of the backlash they are getting.
Completely agree with the OP. Any and all judgement should happen on the 22nd. No if, ands, or buts.
Agreed Elocke. The naysayers came in, saw it wasn't dumbed down like WoW and they quickly called the game horrible. FFXIV reminded me of how gaming was in the good old days.
You know its one thing to defend your game and another thing to make assumptions about other players. To say these "naysayers" just don't like the game because is not "dumbed down" is just as bad as them saying it sucks and only fan boys defend it. Granted some folks might not enjoy it because it has a more advanced system that requires more "patients" and "follow through" to understand and cope with but this dose take the game to some kind of higher plane nor does it demote those who can't find enjoyment in it to a lower one. Some people just don't find it fun, not to say they don't enjoy a challenge or a chance to flex that brain muscle or theres, but to say that that they don't find this particular challenge worthwhile.
As for the OB as one of the other posters said it is to troubleshoot network issues and other minor issues with the game client which a fix to is usually released in a patch at launch.
My two cents on FF XIV:
Gameplay- controls are skittish at best even with a controller one can find themselves very frustrated, but if you take the time to learn them they are not as bothersome. Movement and menu navigation was laggy but most of that is a network issue though i can see how the UI can get on peoples nerves I personally would have preferred a FF XII like UI but thats just me. The slow movement can also be chalked up to the concept of world space, the space feels larger when your not just zipping trough it I see it as SE's middle ground between reality and fantasy space (world size that is).
Continuing with movement many player actions don't seem to flow smoothly, IE transition between active and passive modes again nothing a patch or a few cant fix. Combat movement seemed a bit lack luster actions didn't not seem to flow smoothly and the enemy animations felt off, no real fluidity between them roaming and them engaging you in combat. These combat issues might also be fixed with some patches.
As far as combat goes the stamina gage is a decent concept and i am sure as more skills are available to the player it will require more forethought on the players part as to which actions to use and the appropriate time to use said actions in different scenarios. As far as positioning tactics go i can not comment as I didn't try any group combat. Although i find the combat system unique it was a bit slow though faster than FF XI's. I personally could't get into the combat though although I am sure it gets more involved as you progress and as you group to fight more challenging monsters.
Menu navigation I personally feel could have been worked around but menus have been SE's way since the first FF on the NES (man that game could be a pain, but was fun). That aside the menu system if your not use to going though menus to do many standard game functions can be a nuisance especially due to network lag and computer lag many players may experience. One annoying instance is switching between player/ retainer goods menus in the market wards, this can take a toll on though with less patients or time. I don't feel this menu system adds any challenge to the game more of just an awkward UI for players to get use to but if you can get past it, it is a different approach to how players interact with the game. I may be missing the point of the menu system though so if anyone wants to elaborate on it i do not mind.
Guildleves seem fairly basic kill x of y or obtain z of a from b. Seems these leves are used for an aside to the main story arch and a way for player to earn gil. recipes, mats, some gear, and faction reputation and can be skipped entirely if one so chooses to do so. Leves are also a two step process you must first obtain them from the guild then proceed to x waystone to activate them one at a time which is no big deal since the guildleves correspond to the area around said stone, but as i said the leves are more of a side option for quick rewards and reputation. More advanced leves at higher levels may be more involved though this is just speculation.
Onto.... crafting, for one it is different and again takes patients to understand and follow. I wont say that its hard to learn because it is not it just take time to figure out and patients to take that time, but if you like crafting enough I am sure you can pick it up. Yes it is move involved than WoW and you will lose your materials if you fail to craft your item again this is where patients comes into play, you have to watch your crafting to determine if its going well, this is not for everyone though everyone who would like to take the time can learn it though i personally don't enjoy crafting as is this was definitely not my cup of tea, but for those who prefer a different (not better or worse) approach to crafting and enjoy to craft it is worth a go. Additionally i felt that crafting could have used more of a tutorial mainly due to the fact that much of the economy is going to revolve around it and it is very different from what most players are use to.
Aside from the above stated there is not much else to say about gameplay at least not on my end, as that is what i experienced thus far. So far even for its uniqueness and slight learning curve the game just didn't or hasn't drawn me in with a mix of good and bad this game just does not have the stuff for me but as i said other will like it for the same things i mentioned above. I say just give it a whirl try to learn some of the mechanics if you have the patients to and then decide. As a side note for the this game doesn't hold your hand like WoW and other games argument some people just like to kick back and relax while some want to embrace a challenge, and what one finds relaxing another might fight dull , some might also find challenge, and in what others find challenge some find a lack of or a dis interest in such a challenge and neither is wrong or right in their views its just what they enjoy, i mean in the end don't we all play games to have our form of fun. A better way to put it is some like Jack Daniels and some only drink Mikes Hard Lemonade the guys that like Jack might call the Mikes drinker a sissy and to drink a mans drink when in reality the other guy might just think Jack tastes like ass.
One more thing the graphics in this game are dam decent but the requirements are dam steep.... Hope this was at least somewhat informative and less of a gripe and moan fest.
We go trough life with many yet there is a time we must walk our path alone.
Suppose, theoretically, that Square Enix purposely left out a portion of the game that was not considered necessary for the purpose of Open Beta and that very option which was excluded from Open Beta is something that would have convinced you to stay with the game long term.
Honestly, I am still going to try it, but your hypothetical would indicate incompetence which isnt very encouraging. If they know they left something out that will indicate to OB testers that the game is lame, then wouldnt it seem like common sense for them to mention it?
its already been proven they have left alot of content out of the open beta. the open beta was for stress test not for play to see if want to buy like most people. only gripe ihave is that i hope they remove the stamina system i dont ever like someone trying to tell me how long i can play when im the one paying
You "it's beta" people really piss me off to no end. You are the WORST type of player and "tester" in existence. I see your type in every beta test. You don't do anything but blindly defend the game and repeat "it's beta" over and over and you never question anything. You just assume because it's beta they are going to fix it.
Well guess what? This is NOT a beta test no matter what they are calling it. This is a final stress test before live. If it's a beta where are you filing your bug reports at? Oh yeah, nowhere because it's not beta. Where's the developer feedback that happens during beta where they listen to what hte players like and don't like? yeah, nowhere because it's not beta and in this game especially player feedback doesn't matter. The entire purpose of this portion of their development process is to simulate live conditions and collect metrics so they can balance a few things. you're feedback doesn't matter and you are NOT a tester, you are a connection to the game and a player.
The majority understand what a beta is for, and in this day and age 90% of mmo betas are nothing more than stress tests, live simulations and metric collection. they can't go and look at the majority of players bug feedback as most of it is unuseful gibberish they have an in house team that tests bugs and reports them. There's too much white noise from players.
You are absolutely deluding yourself and have a grandiose opinion of your worth of a beta tester if you think that you are here for anything other than playtesting. If a player decides the game sucks during this time then more power to them. I guarantee you the final release is what you have here. All the stupidity i'm seeing about the requirements say 15gb but you only have 8 or whatever is asanine, the extra is for the installer decompression, end of story there's not GB's of content missing. If there is anything missing it's voiceover work. Quest data and such isn't going to account for that much missing data. The whole thing that devs said that players don't have all the content applied during closed beta, not the current test.
That game as it stands is what you are getting on launch day plus a few bug fixes and maybe some voiceover. Mark my words as you'll be eating your's come launch day.
I always hear that there is so much content and fun that all the so-called pointless haters just didn't find. But nobody tells me, where is all this content and fun?

Maybe it has in the west, or it has been used as a marketing ploy for some games.
Is it necessarily the right way to go? We can't really answer that question, it's up to the companies themselves if they want to use it for marketing, or if they actualy want to use it for stress/systems testing. Now if they called it a free open trial period, then I could see how someone could get upset over the apparent lack of content.
There is a big difference between broken and suiting your own personal needs. Were you disappointed when it wasn't go kill 10 rats kind of quest or was it that fact you actually had to put a little skill into the game to make progress. Or was it that they did not have pointed arrows all over the place showing you where to go all the time. It is funny, people did the same whining when FFXI was launching and 10 years later it is considered to be one fo the best mmos in gaming. FFXIV will be doing the same thing all over again. No doubt it is not going to be a perfect launch for all but most of us players will be there at launch playing anyway.
"Considered to be one fo(sic) the best mmos in gaming".
Considered by who? You?
I don't know a single person who a) still plays FFXI b) liked it when they DID play FFXI. I know people who still play AO, EQ1, etc. Not a single person left from FFXI. My online friends are spread over most every MMO out there... except FFXI.
Was Open beta a bad idea? Well, for Square Enix it probably was a bad marketting move.
For some people open beta saved them the 70 dollars they would have spent on this game.
I may just let gamestop keep their 10 dollar deposit and go sub AoC or something. I can't even get the patcher to work, and I'll be damned if I have to go to an outside source to patch through to this game. The game launcher should be the best way to patch and download a game, but in this case it is garbage.
I am pissed off, I think I will let my friends buy the game and if they tell me everything is going fine I will pick up my pre-order the next day. If they have any problems that is it. Finite

It’s absolutely stunning. But it’s using EQ2 era techniques, so I’m confused as to the performance issues on very capable machines.
