I always type in the name of the patches into Google and download them individually from mediafire/megaupload links (usually stemming from FFXIVCore). I don't think SE likes it, but that's honestly the only real way I've been able to keep updated. The only 2 patches the official updater has done itself were the really small, practically 1kb patches, and even then it took like 10 minutes each.
My ports ARE open, and I know a lot of people have no issue with it, and that's cool. But a large group of people are also having this same issue. And honestly, I don't see a real reason to wait 10+ minutes waiting for that thing to download, when it takes less than a tenth to just manually download them.
Screw it. After about 16 hours it only DL 64% of the first file. I'm done. I'm not going to open a bunch of ports or hoop jump when mostly no other developer is that silly. Coupled with what I already heard from others and the bad first hand experience with thier installer I will be spending my money elsewhere. I thought I would give it a try as people have said it has a nice RP potential but I got better things to do even if it is free.

The download works on a Peer To Peer system like any Torrent client such as BitTorrent or UTorrent. Opening the ports if you don't have a UPnP option is the way to go and this goes for most games. One of the first thing companies will suggest players do when they are experiencing issues (connection, lag) with a game is to often open up the ports. It's very simple to do, no danger.
Hell, opening up the ports lowered a 26 hours long download down to 4 hours....
