I never got to play GW1 because at the time I was full on progression raider mode for The Beast that Blizzard Built™.
Kind of like growing up and seeing pictures of yourself when you were younger and thinking "God, look how dumb I was."
Ok I wander what the rest of us can say then. Since we were all playing UO, EQ, and Nexus when we are all in our teens and early twenties.
Yea, wow is a pretty childish looking game, but GW1 is not any better. GW1 /= game for adults.. most games aren't for adults really, but while the MMO player base has grown older , more and more adults are now playing MMO's.

Yeah, I don't agree with heavyhebrew here. I had tons of fun in WoW. While I believe that there were many flaws in the game that kept it from being perfect, I've never felt that GW1 looked like it was better. Thats just my opinion, but I don't look at GW1 and think "God, look how dumb I was for playing WoW".

I played it and I didn't like it, for the simple fact that it is NOT a true MMO. It is more of like a single player co-op experience with hub cities. I really didn't like that and that was the main thing that turned me off to the original game. I like to see plenty of people running around in the world. Not just be in my own instance by myself. Makes it feel less of an MMO imo.
This is why I am hoping that GW2 goes the MMO open world route. I think they are doing that, but I am still somewhat skeptical. I definately hope the game is more MMO than the original, from what I am hearing it will be. Just gonna have to wait and find out more information when people actually get a chance to play the actual game.
People have played the game and the devs have made it clear more times than i can count that it's full open world.
You being the avid swtor fan would question it but that's obvious. I could turn around and say the same thing about swtor because we have seen none of this so called open world.
As a matter of fact we have seen very little of that game. I could also bring up the fact that a BioWare dev has said the entire game is soloable.
Now if you look up the word entire it means the whole, not just some parts or up to a certain level, the dev used the word entire.
Guess you will find that out once you have payed your money to BioWare.

lol yea, maybe one day he will grow up and say to himself "damn how dumb was I. I mean jeez, you can't even say good things about a game and be a fan boy without other fans jumping all over you, because you worded your optimism about a game in a way they did not like. I have said nothing but good things about gw2 here, I wish you would get off my back about it.

Nah you were choosing your words carefully, that all. You don't believe it is, even though people have played the game.
You know people have played the game or you must of been under a rock for the last four weeks. If i was you i would be more concerned about swtor because right now it's not looking good.
I might be wrong about your intentions but looking at your post it obvious that you really support swtor. All i am saying is we have seen more proff that GW2 is an open world than we have swtor but i don't see any of your post questioning that game.

But after playing the demo for GW2 at PAX, I am full on for this game.

A game is a game to me. I don't care one way or the other if one fails or if one wins. I just want something to play. You don't see me going around bashing these games. I didn't choose my words carefully, I said that I believe this game will be ALOT different from gw1 so there is no comparison.
I think the distinction here for many is great mmo vs. great game.
Anet never claimed GW1 was an mmo. For me it doesnt have to be. My tastes aren't so limited to where the only games i can apreciate are mmo's unlike so many people here it seems. Alot of current mmo players didnt start off with mmo's. Many people started off with single/multiplayer rpg's whether it was a dragon warrior, final fantasy, gauntlet, etc. Hell diablo 2 was the whole reason i bought my first computer. Very few people are going to tell you the diablo games werent good and those where mutliplayer lobby games. Many people here are looking forward to Diablo 3 (sadly im not among them, but thats a totally different subject).
So why do we continue to speak badly of GW1 for not being something it never claimed to be in the first place, but not hold other games that also dont hold themselves to the mmo standard in a negative light? GW1 was a great game and in many area's that it had in common with mmo's, even better(pvp, lack of necessary grinding, lack of griefing/ganking/kill stealing, more endgame content, etc). Are the tastes of people here at this site really limited to purely mmo's? Has no one else here been able to apreciate any other type of game at some point in they're lives?
I had played only a couple mmo's by the time GW1 came out, and at that point i liked GW better because of the differences. I liked not being ganked constantly, or kill stealed by some jerk, or not having to fight over loot. I liked that if i didnt have all day i can go out and solo something that actually progresses my charachter in a meaningful way. I liked that i could respec my toon accordingly for free and whenever i wanted to make up for a class we were missing for a group. I liked the fact that i always made a difference to my party reguardless what class i was, instead of getting lost among 20+ other charachters where if i was afk would anyone notice? I loved that the enemy AI was more intelligent then artificial and didnt simply go after the hardest guy in our group to kill simply because he yelled at it. I liked that when i pvped i never had a moment where i would come up against another class and already know who was going to win. I loved that my role was not necessarily decided by my class. These are all things i cant say for the vast majority of mmo's and i have played alot since then.
The only real complaint i ever here is about it being instanced which is amusing since that is what end game is for most mmo's. Yet you dont hear alot of complaints about that. Instead you have players complaining about there not being enough instances. WTF?!
I read up on GW1 when it was coming up for release. It didn't pique my interest. But some people may have thought it was great. Because they were entertained. More power to them. And I am glad people like you and the OP(crainey92) thought GW1 was a great gaming experience.
I just think this genre's gaming regulars are the equivalent of disgruntled postal workers. Disillusioned, frustrated and angry at life. Personally, I think companies like Cryptic and Mythic (hey, they rhyme, conspiracy time!) owe mmo gamers free donuts. Or strippers.
I have to ask, Nailzz, did you get any hands on with the demo? I would be interested in hearing from a GW1 vet the distinction between GW1 UI and GW2.

I was struggling with dipping into my savings account and going on a road trip up to seatle for PAX(my gf wasnt helping, she is almost as excited for gw2 as i am), but in the end my sense of responcibility won out so i didnt make it up there. That being said, i have been spending alot of time viewing footage from gamescon. Given the new utility features that the classes are being given the new UI does make sense and is an improvement over how the previous UI handled adrenaline (was an additional type of energy for weapon skills for warriors beyond simple mana which all the other classes used). Seeing as how it seems every class is getting something else to monitor having another gauge on the left side of the diabloesque health ball that is in the lower middle of the screen (where it will be hard to miss if your getting low on life) makes sense. It will allow warriors to see how much adrenaline they have. For rangers it looks like that same bar will instead show pet health. For necro's it will show how much "death shroud" life they have built up. etc. On the right side they will of course have the other bar extending from the right of the health ball showing energy.
My only concern is how they seperated the skill bar by putting 5 skills on the left and 5 skills on the right of your health ball which is going to be a pain in the rear for people that click there skills as opposed to hitting numbers on the keyboard. For most mmo's clicking numbers is fine, but if your wasd hand is going to be busy dodging/rolling then clicking becomes optimal since your mouse will be more freely available to you in combat and seperating the skill bar into 2 parts with a gap between them means that youll be having to move your mouse around alot more in combat. Its minor but most mmo players are lazy and will use this as a reason to complain. Now again, i havent played this in person yet, but this is just what i get from viewing footage and paying attention to the UI. Im hoping someone who has played can dismiss my concerns.

the reasons here is exsactly why i think it would be such a bad idea to throw the legacy of GW1 away. Not having respect for thesse acomplishments at that time is in my book ignorant.
So to sungodra. You can claim that you only talk good about GW2 , but when you talk bad about GW1 the way you do, you forget that the reasons GW2 is hyped to the lvl it is to day , is because of the trackrecord areannet has with GW1 and because of a very big and loyal fanbase that has done a great job at correcting many of the misunderstandings there have been about GW2.
if you want to be a fan of gw2 , pls don't sound like a troll
I have been playing guild wars off and on since its release, have done most of the end game and really enjoy the PVP (best PVP out of all the online RPGs I have played). As for the discussion in this thread about not recommending this game since it is not a MMO to new GW2 fans. To me this is weird; if they have not tried it then they should do some research and see if they are interested in it. Arena net even says that Guild Wars is not a MMO they call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game), while GW2 is being classified as a MMO. So with that in mind they should be able to see that the games are going to be totally different. So they can try the first one if it sounds interesting and if not just wait for GW2. Let them be the judge and try not to put preconceived notions in their head based on your opinion, because they might not share your opinion (I know that is a wild and crazy notion).
As for me I look forward to seeing GW2 in action since Guild Wars has been the only online game I have really stuck with and enjoyed over a long period of time. I absolutely love the way the game does not use the traditional agro mechanic for tanking, and the dynamics of the dual class system. Plus I really look forward to the traditional holy trinity not being used in GW2, and the other innovations with questing that it is bring to the genre.

Didn't really care for the first one, was linear and instanced, didn't feel like an mmo.
This one is open world to my understanding, except for the pvp (which i often contemplate why?)
Will give it a look when it's closer to release, but i'm not to excited about whats been shown and discussed thus far.
