While not a hardcore FF11 player, it is still my favorite MMO out there. The thing that drew me in, and keeps the game high on my list of games is the atmosphere of the game. It sucks me in like no other MMO has before or since.
I'm VERY happy that FF14 has that same "feel" to it. This alone is enough for me to purchase the game and play it. That being said, I DO have concerns and complaints.
I, like many people, don't really like the UI of the game. I find it counter intuitive. My thoughts on tweaking the current UI to fix my problems with it. (Some of these suggestions may already be there, but I haven't found them yet.)
-A setting that allows the camera to "follow" your character. The game CAN do it, it does it when you turn on auto-run, they need an option to just have the camera do this all the time.
-The ability to click on "interacable" items such as crystals, nodes, lifts, etc. to activate them, or at least bring up a window TO interact with them. I find hitting "Home" every time I want to access a crystal annoying.
-Hot buttons for things like Inventory, Gear, Actions/Traits, etc. I don't want to have to create a macro to do this, I just want to be able to hit I, B, P, or something to bring up the respective window. I can do it with "M" for map.
-Adjust the transparency of the map. I would love to be able to hit M, and have the transparency be 50-25%. Personal wish.
There are things I think deserve a better/fuller explanation in the game. I've found myself frustrated with guildleves because the game didn't explain the "waiting time" in getting new ones. Also, the game didn't make it clear that you have to be in passive mode to swap out actions. Something that was very frustrating to me for a while.
I am currently concerned with the lack of quests in the game. FF11 had alot, not as many as say, WOW, but there were quite a few. I've heard that more will be in at launch, so right now its just nervous worry.
I don't like the MP regen system. It shackles players to the crystals or nodes. Though the abilities for regenning mana help aleiviate this, I think that its not quite enough.
A good way to search all the bazaars in the market wards at once is needed. I have heard there's a way to do this, but I haven't seen it. Plus if you want to wander the wards, it would be very good to be able to know at a glance what a person is trying to sell. Symbols that appear next to a name where the bag is that denotates the focus of their bazaar (weapons, armor, cooking, misc, etc.) would help me choose the person's bazaar that I want to browse.
This is not a problem with the game, so much as it is the (beta) community. I have yet to get a group to play in. I've looked, but I haven't had any luck yet. A large amount of the fun in FF11 was in the grouping. I am happy to be able to exist solo, but definitely prefer to group when I can.
Even with the problems I've mentioned, I'm buying the game. I'm even thinking of spending the $75 for the extra 8 days gametime. But really, there ARE problems with the game at the moment, not enough to drive me away, but things that do hamper my enjoyment.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I agree with pretty much everything, but I have to add that the mana regen isn't too much of a problem, as there will be hubs throughout the world people can visit, as well as certain skills, and maybe reward items like portable crystals you can drop and your party can use to regen and get leves and stuff. The beta is missing a lot of stuff that will be available at launch. So we'll see. Plus they will definitely improve the game in the comming months. The launch doesn't set the game in stone like some people leasd themselves to believe. So, I'll see you ingame, perhapse.
Good ideas for the UI. I can't think of any reason why they couldn't add such things. I would only add that a mouse click on the environment should move you to that location. This would give a lin2 style mouse movement that would help a lot of pc only mmo types.
Beyond the UI the only other things that has me concerned is the heavy system requirments. They need to find a way to scale the graphics down more. I am loosing count of the number of people who have mentioned that they want to try it or have tried it but their computer lagging way too much.
All die, so die well.
I won't be using this anymore during beta or afterwards. There is no fun to be had using an interface. The game is lost somewhere behind that.
I was a longtime ffxi player and also a beta tester.
For one thing when you hit the ctrl or alt key it brings up the macro bars. They shoulda kept the macro bar part of the UI. Then they'd have plenty of room on the KB for ctrl/alt + hotkeys. Like they did in ffxi. Then with so many hotkey options that would free up the arrow keys for camera angle, so you could drive your char with the num pad and move the camera with your thumb.
The other thing they could do would be to make a healing class again. The whole hanging out by the crystal thing isn't cuttin it. I realize they, and most other mmo's, are trying to eliminate the whole "looking for healer" thing. But still, be nice to have a healer in the group.
In ffxi the F8 key would target the nearest npc...that would be nice in ffxiv...I haven't found a good way to target just npc's without having to tab thru all the surrounding players. But that's a small issue so far.
I still wanna try a gamepad to see how that goes...if I like the gamepad better then the kb I think I'll wait for the PS3 release to get started.
I had pre-ordered FFXIV but called and cancelled it after playing the beta. I haven't totally given up on it, but I'm no longer counting the days til release. The camera is sorta important and shouldn't be placed on just some empty keys as they did using the IJKL keys...shame too, the game looks awesome...but that's sorta moot if the UI stinks
Good bye then
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
Please post here after the game releases and you have played for more than a trial run. Let us know how you like it then. I am interested in how the repeated scenery/objects/and questing is going to appeal to someone with your resistance to what other people who like the game are complaining about as "just trolling". Do you think the game world and objects have the variety enough to hold your attention for longer than the initial cost of the game? Many folks have had experiences like mine of extreme repetition.

This is an excellent idea. People could choose which icon they wanted to use or perhaps the game itself would use the icon that represents the majority of the things being sold. Think of it this way: if the retainers were real people, surely they would be telling you what they had for sale, like, "Come and get your weapons here" or "Crystals here, at the lowest prices." There should be some sort of indication. Perhaps once the game is released, players will naturally start using the wards for different things and it will become familiar over time: i.e. first ward for weaopons, 2nd for armor etc.
Most everything else you said can/will be solved by you getting a controller (practically a must for this game) and by the game being released and some tweeks to party weapon skill gain so it's worthwhile to party.
Well if you are used to mmos on easy mode like WoW then this game won't be for you. In FFXIV you have to pay attention to details just like how FFXI was.
Exactly where do you need to pay attention to detail?
Combat and crafting ? I mean you can't just spam skills and think you are going to get a kill each and every time. Some skills have little to no effect on mobs. Do I even have to explain crafting to you ? You can't just walk away from the computer and expect everything to be crafted just like you can in WoW or Lotro. There is a method to killing mobs and performing crafting in FFXIV.
LOL, you don't have to pay attention to combat any more than in any other MMO. Admittedly the crafting is more complex than most MMOs, but its not the most complex out there.
As I thought, you can't think of any real ones.
I agree, without the venom. FFXIV doesn't seem to be anymore a "thinking man's mmo" than any of the others. It's just different. Hopefully once they make partying worthwhile, the battle regiman system will be at least as interesting as the ffxi skillchain system, if not moreso. That won't take "thinking" per se, but it will hopefully require coordination.
As for crafting, f they're going to make crafting interactive, I'd wish they'd make it less combersome but more complicated than just stopping a scrolling meter at an arbitrary point. Some sort of mini game or some sort of visualization, like a window with a picture of the anvil and randomly glowing spots that you try to hit, like whack-a-mole or something, would be really appreciated. Something that makes it more FUN.
Re; Battle, I'm sure this willl be fixed, but I certainly can just spam one ability and kill most things appropriate to my level, even moreso than any other mmo I've played before.
Everyone here should be warned that Xipher was the guy that insisted Darkfall didn't have a grind worth mentioning, making a record 20k posts or something on the Darkfall boards. His opinions may vary greatly from reality- be warned.
It's so sickening to take a look in the forums on MMORPG.com these days, it's hilarious to see self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamers whining about how the game lacks a decent tutorial and how they're stuck in the game after the first story quest. The very definition of irony.
At the other side we got the people seeking desperately after a new MMORPG to call their new home in a post-WoW world. Of course, after several letdowns over the past few years their standards have reached the point of impossibility. The games have to be flawless at first glance in the OBT to be worthy of their enjoyment, along with the retail box price.
Square Enix got some major balls to try to market a new type game in this day and age. I shouldn't really say new, but I'll take my chances and take it that you get my point. I guess I don't even have to bring up the reactions of the majority of MMO gamers towards this game seeing as how this forum could easily be classed as an unofficial hateboard against FFXIV and Square Enix in general.
But really, what's the point of sticking around and pointing out obvious flaws with this game if you're not planning on playing it? I've seen several select members on these boards who early on in the OBT loud and clearly stated that they will have nothing to do with this game, and to this day they preach to the masses about how Square Enix got the better of all of us. Pathetic.
Atleast be thankful that you got a chance to cancel your pre-order if the game is such a letdown for you, god knows that there's a whole bunch of titles coming out in the near future that will satisfy your needs, turning your experience with FFXIV to nothing but a bad memory.
I really believe FFXIV targets a select few of the MMORPG players today, indirectly. If you're not feeling like one of the chosen few, then go.. and suffer no more.
Good day to you all.
No Auto-attacking in FFXIV. Mostly other mmos have the auto-attack feature where you can kick your feet up and watch tv while your character kills something. SO I would say yeah, you would have to pay attaetion alo tmore than other mmos. It still requires more thought and knowledge than most mmos out there.
FFXIV seems easier right now because you don't fight higher-end monsters where you will have to manage aggro, mana, etc. Most players stay near the Aetheryte to regen, etc. Once players start to travel, they will have to be carefull not to run out of mana until they finally reach the other Aetheryte (sort of like a Check Point).
The reason why people post their criticisms of the game is because they want and probably still want to like this game, but feel disappointed by it. Those who no longer care or have not cared about the game are not in these forums.
There's a difference between structural criticism and common bitching and whining about not getting what they want from the game, and the need to tell everyone that this game is not what they expected. You obviously haven't read enough posts in these forums to back up your last statement. Take a look around, hating on this game at every given moment in hope of drawing other people from the game is starting to become a hobby for some people.
