I've definitely been thinking about this too!

There should be a rank 1 crafting leve initially available to you, too.  However, I find even the rank 1 leve is not a sure thing if you haven't had a chance to practice crafting a little first.

While I didn’t try alchemist, maybe if I describe my experiences as starting off as a culinarian, it should be similar concept, right?

So recently, I decided to start out from character creation as a DoH class, specifically culinarian.  Up to this point, I’d only ever switched over to a crafting class after having earned gil and shards etc. with my botanist or a DoM/DoW class.

I wanted to see how I could pull this off, knowing that my culinarian has 0 gil and she really doesn’t want to fail any of her culinarian leves right off the bat.  Maybe it’s just me, but I find the starter rank 1 local leve for a crafting class is kinda hard when my crafting rank is also 1.  I botch it more than I don’t in this case.  And with the 48 hour leve wait before being able to try it again, well, that’s not a good start to a career as a crafter.

What I normally would do is practice up my crafting skill of choice, and gain rank 2 and a bit before trying the starter rank 1 leve.  But without gil to buy ingredients if you start off as a DoH class, you can’t practice, so there’s a good chance you’re slightly stuck if you botch the starter leve and really want to be a crafter from day 1.

So here’s what I ended up doing (and maybe this will help you):

    1. Created a culinarian.  I picked Limsa Lominsa for the starting city in this case.

    2. Did the “Treasures of the Main” quest up to the part where you get 1000 gil for the balloon fish, which is not too far into the quest.

    3. Used that 1000 gil to buy a hatchet (yay, I’m a botanist now).  I could have bought a DoM/DoW weapon instead of a hatchet, of course.

    4. Did the 2 starting botanist leves, giving me some more gil and a few fire shards among other types, plus a few things I didn’t need that I could sell to NPCs for even a bit more money.

    5. Used the money I made to buy chicken eggs and mineral water from NPCs.  These are needed to make boiled eggs.

    6. With these ingredients, plus my fire shards, I could now practice my cooking enough to become rank 2 culnarian.

    7. Then I tried the rank 1 culinarian starter leve.  I was able to complete it successfully, much easier than if I hadn’t raised my culinarian rank up a little first.

    8. All this can be done in a reasonable amount of time, making it very possible to start a crafting career on day 1, just maybe not as simply as with the other types of classes, which can get right into their leves and be successful right away.

However, is this really “starting off” as a crafting class?  It’s not like it’s a big deal, of course, since it’s so easy to change classes in this game with enough gil to purchase a primary tool or weapon.  I just thought it was interesting, based on my experiences with the beta.  With the approach I took above, at least I get to keep the starting crafting outfit on my character, which has some pluses for a crafter (plus, some of them are cute :D), so that’s not bad.

I hope this helps you a little. xD

If you do the starter quest (Through the bartender in your town) you end up with 30,000 gil.

I did the starter quest in Gridania as an Alchemist. It's highly entertaining throwing rocks at mobs for 1 dmg, but it completed the quest.

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

Yup. xD  But to practice crafting before trying crafting leves, you need shards as well.
