Looking for cool dungeoning, is this game for me?

sylentnytesylentnyte Member UncommonPosts: 68

Couldnt find anything on this so:

I've been playing mmos since the original eq, played most, but did not play FFXI.

I'm looking for a game that is mostly group oriented Which i here that FF is, but Cool engrossing dungeons are a must have for me.

Cool dungeon settings, rare drops, and lots of grouping - Does FF XIV have this?

No. The 'dungeons' it has are just holes in the ground with the same or similar mobs spawning in them. They do not have a theme as in EQ2, WoW, or LotRO, they do not extend very far or are they very 'dungeon crawly'.

This is not a typical quest themed game. It's more a lightweight sandbox for JRPG enthusiasts. If you are looking for lots of adventure and quest depth, avoid FFXIV. If you are looking for an escape into a JRPG world where everything squeaks, looks and acts KAWAII!! (cute) then this might be for you.

'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

Lets look a little beyond the rant even though it has the basic idea about Dungeons at the moment.

Well besides the Kawaii, the game will fail in Japan if they dont fix things. I can understand Japanese for the most part even if slowly and I read the same thing people are saying in English.

"Where are the recipes? Where do I learn new recipes?" I pointed them to our English website of goodies on crafting... Then later I hear him talking....

Sadly the different starting areas vary tremendously in how people view this game.

In Ul'dan(sp?) for example there is a "dungeon" in the NE corner of the starter map. The mobs there are hostile so I didn't make it too far in.

Another note, the majority of the game isn't live yet, so we don't really know.

I'd assume they have similar design decisions to FFXI though, so might want to check that out.

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

I would have to disagree, there ARE holes in the ground that are just caves that have a few mobs that spawn in them.

However, there ARE infact deep expansive dungeons and mines and caves that go in so deep as to span most of a region.

Most of those are marked on your map with an arrow pointing to their entrance and the name of the cave, dungeon, or what have you listed above said arrow.  However most of these places are for Physical level 20 or higher it seems I can't go in very far without being killed.

So far I'm not a fan of this game at all, in-fact I've never even tried to get in this bata. However I'm sure in a years time alot will be worked out to the point I may give FF14 a real good shot, because FF11 was all about grouping, and was always Julius of that and their dungeons but never invested the time in learning the controls.

I'm giving it 6 mo to a year and see how things go.

There ARE dungeons in this game. Some of them are really tough to get around. However there are basically none of the typical instanced labyrinths filled with endless waves of aggressive enemies and a giant boss at the end.

As for grouping... you absolutely need large party battles to survive some of the tougher encounters. You can even get more EXP that way, and the guildleve limit helps parties and linkshells even further. Classes like Conjurers and Lancers are essentially support classes- use them if you're planning on staying in a large party pretty much the whole way through.

For the record, that wasn't a rant. I made that post completely emotionless. I've dropped out of the beta weeks ago realizing that the game wasn't for me. I don't have any vested interest in the game either for its success or failure. I just gave the most blatant and undiluted response to the man's question that I could.

When it's all said and done, in the end, you have to blame WoW for spoiling everyone :P

I bet the OP enjoyed low level WoW instances and how abundant and diverse they are compared to most MMO's.

Not saying this should be made the standard, but logically.. and if you think about it hard enough, it makes sense to have such a system of instanced dungeons.  They provide a PVE challenge, focus people into groups or geographical locations, and require some semblance of strategy or timing usually.  I don't play WoW anymore, but I did pick up Global Assault for 20$ recently.  Even the missions in that game are exactly the same. i.e. get a balanced group, clear out some trash, and kill a boss for loot and exp.

As I see it, FFXIV encourages grouping to do 5 star rated leve quests with others.  As far as dungeons, they have caves and whatnot, but it maybe somewhat of a let-down if you are used to WoW's dungeons :P

I Blame WoW for existing in the first place.  It offers too much for all people.  Many try to copy it hoping for a similar pay-off, but usually end up failing.

I would just let Blizzard monopolize the MMO market and all other publisher's and studio's work on making sweet SP or MP games :D

Maybe I'm reading the thread wrong, but from what I read FFXIV had the things he mentioned. image

If it is similar to FFXI, then it will have everything the OP mentioned, but no one knows what will be available at launch.

Sir, it is unclear by your context to whom you are referring to: me, Laughing-Man, or yourself.  I think the most honest answer would be yourself, because my personal experiences with the game reflect that what Laughing-Man said was quite correct, and all I did was agree with him strongly and indicate your conflicting opinion was such as to suggest you are falsifying your sentiment in order to demonize the game further.

The game will do well in Japan because they'll play it on the PS3. Just a theory.

Let me just say this. If this game is anything like FFXI then dongeons ( i am not sure what u yourself call dongeons) will be amazing. scary, tedious, confusing, frustrating, open. And I mean all of these as compliments. While 11 had instances reserved for you and your group in the WoW sense of dongeon. The place the game shined was the open dongeons all throughout the game.

He's actually right about this. If that's all SE cares about, great.

However, judging by their stock prices LOL I hope that isn't all they care about.

The one thing no one has mentioned is loot. As far as I've heard most weapons and armor are player crafted. Will there be epic loot from dungeons? I know there was in 11
