I don't really care about the name, Guild Wars 2 sounds nice in my opinion. However the name Tyria (Both the whole world and the continent of the initial release of GW2 are named Tyria) sounds quite nice as well.

Then Guild Wars 2 sounds better, just Tyria doesn,t seems right.
and please people don,t post GUILD WARS 2 .HE ASKED FOR ANOTHER NAME.
Tyria. Guild Wars is and always was a terrible name. What PvP Co-Op or MMO doesn't have guild wars? Sort of like DCUO, CO, or COH naming themselves Super Hero Fights.

I never understood what connection name Guild Wars has with lore of the first game ?
Can someone explain me please ??
From advertizing and gameplay point - Guild Wars perfectly illustrated PVP side of GW ... but lore ?!
No connection to the story that was otherwise very well written.
So I would say , any other name would fit better. But who cares about the name after all?
THE Guild Wars date back far before the events in GW1. The Guild War was a massive war involving almost guilds all over the continent of Tyria. King Adelbern (The Last King of Ascalon) was the leader or atleast part of the guild that ended The Guild Wars.

Fair enough
But here is the thing. Why is that I, who played the original Guild Wars, and do read the quests in game, have no idea what Guild Wars represent in game lore ?
Second why name the game based on something that happened before the game took place , and is largely irellevant to the game storyline ?
If you ask me. They named the game Guild Wars to illustrate competitive GVG side of the game (which is trully the best feature of the GW1)
And than stitched some background story to justify it.

My guess is they initially planned on making Guilds a much more important aspect than just (but still fantastic) for the PvP, but were limited in this by the game itself perhaps.
Also the way you could have known besides reading it on the wiki was reading the Guild Wars Prophecies Game Manual. That is where I knew it from.

I don't know what game you played but there's a guild wars between the White Mantle and the Shining Blade besides the story line. Same with the guild wars among the dwarfs.
Back to topic. I would rather call the game "Guild Wars: Twilight of Men"
Oh my god, with all respect of the world guys, but most of yours suggestions sucks, and very hard.
Some of them are too short, or too long. Too complex, or too simple. Others had nothing to do with the IP itself. Yes, it is very hard to bring up a nice unique name.
But maybe i had this impression because i really like the name Guild Wars. It's simple, in fact very common to the MMO genre, but it has a deeper meaning (both in competitive PvP and the pre-lore of GW1), it sounds nice and is now very unique (because of the franchise). To the guy that said that the "guild wars" were more of an excuse, i'll explain it further:
The historical event "guild wars" were fought by organizations WAY larger than the average guild present in normal MMO's, better start with that. It's consequences are present everywhere in the Prophecies campaign, because this civil war between the humans kingdoms and inside themselves weakened them hard, making it much easier for the Charr and Undead invasions (main focus on the Ascalonian arc and minor focus on the Krytan arc). I never played Factions or Nightfall (i'm just starting GW:EN though), but you can see "Guild Wars" all over the Prophecies campaign: the white mantle and shining blade conflict, the fights between the dwarves, even between the player guilds, etc. In fact i believe the consequences of the historical event "guild wars" will still be seen in GW2, not as clearly as in GW1 though, specially in the Orr kingdom, which we know almost nothing about yet.
So yes, i would stick with the name Guild Wars 2.
Playing: Starcraft II. Played: Tibia, Ragnarok Online, Ultima Online, Guild Wars, World of Warcraft. Wanna play: Guild Wars 2, SW:TOR, Final Fantasy XIV, Diablo III.

GDubbyah - A Rebirth. The Age of Tyrian Darkness and Anarchy's Call to Everquest for the Absolute Master Guild's Final 14 Reckonings.
Being that Guild Wars is an established franchise now, it would be hard to change title because of the first game.
Guild Wars applied better to the lore of first game and is now perhaps out of place in the second? I kind of liked the Utopia idea.
Perhaps something like: Utopia: A Guild Wars Odyssey.
Guild Wars Online
EverEvent
Guild Wars Galaxies
World of Guild Wars
Guildscape
Guild Wars: The New Tyria
Guild Wars: Planes of Tyria
GUILD
Guild & Wars
Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished
