Hello there,
i got intrested in this game but i have some questions , hope someone here could help me...
how narrow are the paths ? i mean.. i've seen some gameplay videos and i noticed in the mini-map that some paths are really narrow, how open the world really is ? does it has an exploration feeling while you run through the map ? Those teleports from city to city, how often do you need to use them ? how many times you (who was in the beta) thought "i wish i could jump" while playing ? does the game have Instanced areas/maps like AOC ?
at last (for now) How heavy is the grind ?
alot of questions, but i hope someone can answer them...
Comments
1. If I pretended my character was in real life, the paths seemed like they were 12-15 feet across (3-4 meters). So not too narrow, plus the huge canopy of the forest made it seem more open. And the Uldah area is just one huge open area but with caves. And same with the LL area.
2. Yeah i felt like I was exploring once I got passed the heavily populated areas, even found a nasty looking Morbol deep in teh woods, and then found an undead, underground basement area, twas fun.
3. You don't NEED to teleport to another city per'se, but if your a crafter you need to grab the training books in all the different crafting guilds. Also you could grab more leves in the other cities and make your levelling seem faster.
4. I never felt I needed to jump... but I did find it inconvienient that I couldn't sprout wings and fly.
5. There are instanced areas while questing, and therefore might be instanced dungeons later, but for now we don't know.
6. The grind didn't seem that bad, not that I was racing to level as quickly as possible or anything. I took up mining which gave me 2 extra physical levels which I thought was fun. I was still getting decent skill ups and xp from mobs that I was killing at level 1, so killing quickly didn't give me the "grind" feeling I got in say AION or soloing in FFXI.

so the maps does not give a restrictive feeling ? thats good
what about crafting, how important will crafting be in this game ? everything is craftable ? i read that weapos have some durability, but its like wow and lotro where you pay a small fee and the item is good to go again ?
and finally, how different this game is from others mmos ?
ty for your time
Everything in the game almost is crafted, and crafting is very dependant on other crafting classes. Crafting parties work out very well so that each craft can make what is needed for others. Also items need to be repaired from crafters as well. They will be focusing on having groups of crafters or companies have a major economic role in the game.
The game feels very different, but it may shock you. Many don't like the difference. The class system is also very different. You equip any crafting tool or weapon and you are that weapon/tools class and you can level them all up on your 1 character. You can also mix and match abilities.
The world is seamless and even travel is real time ish. You get on a boat and sail to the destination. The world is just a launch sized world now so it could be bigger and I am sure they will be constantly adding to it. The tight paths exist mostly in Gridania, the forest city.
You probably want to try it in OB if you have any chance. This game just isn't for some people.
As mentioned, two out of the three starting areas has wide open spaces. You may get blocked by terrain sometimes but mostly you can go anywhere. In Gridania where you adventure in the forest there are a lot of more narrow paths to follow but I didn't get the feel that it was very restrictive. It just seemed more like a forest where the much of it was impassible. You still get a great sense of exploration but it is more like being in a hedge maze. You can only go certain directions but there is much to explore still.
Everything is crafted and every craft is needed. Not only to create the original items but also to repair them. You can get your stuff repaired at a vendor but they can only restore so much of the durability. Only a player crafter can fully repair and item. Also, all the materials for crafting can be gathered. You can buy some of the basics but it is very expensive. It is much better to gather or to buy from gatherers the raw materials. There are three gathering professions but you also get crafting materials as drops from killing things. The interesting thing is that you don't get any cash or any gear from non-humanoid mobs. I don't know about humanoids, haven't killed any yet. But you also get crystals from killing mobs and crystals are essential for crafting. So the adventurers are also essential to the crafting economy. Everyone depends on everyone.
Jumping didn't seem like a big deal. I haven't missed it. Though you do wish you could jump off small ledges often.
The only two things I would caution on would be:
1. Realize that it uses a console interface. It is best played with a game controller but you can mimic the game controller on the keyboard. But you have to be willing to learn something completely new if you have not played FFXI. It is not so bad though. You can get used to it. I learned it and I haven't played console games since the old Atari days. It does take some effort though.
2. It takes a pretty chunky machine to play. Done assume that your machine will handle it fine because it can runn everything else. SE has a program that will check out how good your machine will be for running this game. I don't remember where to find it though. Just be sure you can play it before you buy it.
All die, so die well.
ty again for the posters
I do have the benchmark, in high resolution i got 2457 in low i got 3200+-, i guess i'll be able to play it, not in maxed high quality graphics, but still....
The game sure looks amazing, i'm enjoying what you are talking about the crafting system, the problem is, since i can be everything, will i really need the others for crafting ? or it'll be easy to have and alt focused for gathering and the main as a full crafter who can do everything ?
About the controles, i'll be pleased to play in a controller.... i have a Xbox 360 controller for pc, i guess it'll work good won't it ? i'm a console player too, i have a ps3.
The thing is if you craft everything it will take a lot of money and resources to be able to create full items. One early level item may take materials from 4 different crafts. It can be pretty time consuming and money consuming to do it all yourself when the other crafts have those extra items unused usually.
YES use your 360 or PS3 controller. When you install/dl FFXIV go to Program Files->Square Enix->FFXIV->FFXIV Config and setup your gamepad. Use the keyboard just for typing and you will feel pretty comfortable with the game. If you need help go to a crystal in the game, press start on the controller, and select help or the Aetheryte and go to help. Good luck, and enjoy.
If you specifically start in Gridania, the paths are quite narrow, because the map is basically weaving between the hills and roots of a tremendously overgrown forest. Anywhere else, they're mostly wide open plains.
This game definately has sights that took my breath away upon discovering them. Your milage may vary.
I've already almost completely out of "anima," which is used to facilitate quick travel, so I'm going to say that you won't be using teleports all that often unless you play very sparingly (allowing your anima to replenish). The world is big and the teleportation is limited enough that it does not diminish that bigness. On top of that, you need to have walked to and visited each location before you can teleport to it.
Very rarely. If a slope isn't able to be walked on top of, it's often too high to have jumped anyway. Sometimes I wish I could jump down an embankment rather than having to walk down to a ramp, though.
It does have instances, but instancing is used very sparingly here. In fact, if you get a Guildleve, instead of spawning you a whole map in which that Guildleve takes place, they spawn you monsters which belong to you and your Guildleve in the main world. That really dedicates a commitment to cut down on instances. However, you will nonetheless encounter instances, particularly when going through plot-driven quests.
The grind is less heavy than I thought it would be, they diminished it somewhat from FFXI, but it's definately there in a palpable amount. They tried to put casual players on the same level of hardcore players by limiting how far hardcore players can grind on a single class in exchange for encouraging them to diversify into other classes while keeping the grind relatively short. However, this is still a grind that assumes the player is not afraid of playing the game.
without instances, with those graphics and a global server, how they handle the lag if alot of people come together at the same spot ?! might lag as hell, i've seen reports from people with a insani Rig still not running the game smoothly
They have a phasing system which only displays what you can handle and others are hidden until you have enough resources.
Game performance varies wildly both in FPS and lag in general.
I'd have to say going to a camp my fps didnt dip too bad.
I would highly recommend trying the beta to see how your system deals with the game and how tolerable you find the existing lag to be.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
I dont have a beta key, or even the game client.... i did a queick search and found nothing about beta giveway.... i think i'll just wait for a trial when the game releases.
Some bad news there... you might be in for a bit of a wait. The Final Fantasy XI trial showed up on Fileplanet 9.29.2008, the game was released in 2003 If they have a similar lag behind Final Fantasy XIV's trial, you could be looking at a 5 year wait . This is no F2P Eastern import, but a humongous name-brand title, they're not going to be real quick to offer trials.
As apparently your Google Fu isn't very good, I shall direct you to the beta signup: it is here. I anticipate you will have trouble downloading the game, look on top of the forum where we've already got a thread about it.
as i said i did a quick and lasy search =P
but i've areadly got the beta key and registered... its not common to have a open beta key so easy this days... thats why i even bothered looking the official website lol
i just found the game client at a torrent tracker... guess i'll download from there.
Ty for the info anyhow
Will house system be available at launch ?
