A quick question from a new player...which server currently has the best balance? Or, can someone recommend a server? New to the game, I like it so far, but am lost... Also, how does one activate the pet that came from with the purchase of Aion (the bear)?

None of the servers are balanced.
Theres only one server with a strong asmo presence and thats Vaizel. Prior to merge, there was some balance on a few servers but they pissed that away.
I wish I could recommend a server to you, but all of the server personalities have been removed since the merge. Theyre pretty much all the same now. If your asmo and you want to succeed in the Abyss, you'll roll on Vaizel. If your Elyos, hell take your pick. Theyre steam rolling every other server.
If you want the servers to be balanced shouldnt Elyos join Vaizel and Asmos join other servers?
----ITS A TRAP!!!----
ya, but that would take the work of the entire community or NCsoft.
instead you have asmos leaving elyos dominated servers and flooding vaizel making the game more imbalanced.
I dont think theres any way for the community to fix this. NCsoft is going to have to get creative and find some way to do it, though I dont see that happening.
OP, what race do you plan on playing and maybe I can offer a suggestion or two.
Try checking the abyss status page every once in a while. It doesn't seem to include the new areas though but it gives you a better idea about how things are balancing from a pvp perspective than census numbers can give.

Israphel has been the most consistently balanced over the last several weeks with the elyos a good ways ahead of the asmos but not completely dominating them. You can only roll asmo on this server.
On Nez, Siel and Zikel the Elyos dominated strongly up until just a while ago. The asmos had just a sliver of abyss on these servers just over a month ago. They all seem to be getting better for the asmos lately though and that is great to see. I haven't checked but I suspect you can only roll asmos on all these servers. Keep in mind that the fort timers are set off server time zones with Zikel being east coast, Siel being west coast and Nez being Sydney time. Also, Vaizel is west coast and Israphel is east.
While the others were strongly elyos, the one NA server that was strongly asmo was Vaizel. The asmos on Vaizel were completely dominating about a month ago but this is balancing quickly, possibly more quickly than the elyos server are getting better for the asmos. If you really, really want to go elyos in NA then you will have to go Vaizel. This is the only NA server I know of that you cannot roll asmo on.
Short version: Israphel has had the most balance for the longer portion of time but the none of the servers are bad right now. If you roll asmo, and you should, choose your server based on timezone if you are likely to play normal hours in the evening. As of right now. I would say zikel looks like the best place for new asmos but it is impossible to tell if it will stay that way.
Of course, I have no idea what is happening to the servers for the EU. Overall, I would say that things are picking up quickly for the asmos so it is not a bad time at all to roll on one of these servers. Asmos are slightly the underdogs but not so much that they are getting crushed making for a nice challenge but with enough success to keep moral high. The asmos have always had a tougher lot in life. They have had to overcome greater adversity and that has made them stronger if fewer in number. Come join the darker but more honorable side of the war. You won't regret it.
