My curiosity was piqued so I decided to try this out. I've heard good things about the game. Just got done playing for half an hour. Figured out the basics of the UI, how to cut down trees and make basic stuff. Very cool. It's not going to win any graphics awards, but it looks like it could be a lot of fun for crafters and explorers.
What resources are out there for Wurm newbs? Any tips or pointers?

Welcome to Wurm Nizur. I've been playing for about a month and a half now and what the small team that have been working on this game have achieved is commendable. For sandboxers, explorers and crafters this game is truly a gem and shouldn't be missed. There is no other game on the market I've encountered that gives you this amount of power and freedom to change the game world.
The game has its flaws for sure but that is to be expected from a very small indie group working on a shoestring budget, however if you can get past the warts this game is remarkable.
Tips:
First of all make sure you can feed yourself well for when your free food and drink runs out at the bartenders. The best way to do this is to barter with another player for a fishing rod (the player assistants can usually sell you one cheap) and put the fish you catch in a pottery bowl with one edible foraged or botanized item to make casseroles.
Also, If you manage to mine yourself any ql10+ gems and there is a chance you may sub in the future then hold on to them. They are worth much more on the freedom server than on golden valley.
If you make the trip over to freedom I found it very useful to take a mooring anchor, mooring rope and a boat lock with me through the portal. That way, once you arrive you will only need woodworking tools to finish crafting a rowboat. Samling is one of, if not the most, heavily populated areas on freedom so a boat can help you to get out and explore for a nice quiet spot to build upon.
Lastly, there are a lot of kind and helpful players in the game (the community is really top-notch) but be careful which village you join if you don't plan to be a hermit as a minority of players are only too eager to exploit the newbies. Check out the recruitment section of the forums and do your research before choosing.
Resources - I don't know what fansites there are but so far I've found everything I need to know either on the wiki, on the forums or from asking questions in-game.
Best of luck,
Torluk
Your best resource is their dedicated forums. The players in this game are very genuine, and there really is only one person that will try to get your goad (hi, rand). He's cool at times though.
If you have any questions you can pm me as well, or just ask in this thread, but their forums will no doubt be faster. I haven't played in quite some time, but I spent 2 years with it, and question going back on a daily basis.
Oh, also check their wiki (can be found through the main site). Seriously, almost anything you could ever need is in it.

Thanks for the replies. I have been going over the wiki and it has a lot of great info. There's a lot to read up on and learn, but it's all good.
One thing I've noticed about the game though is that it crashes to the desktop fairly regularly. I've tried adjusting all kinds of settings, but nothing seems to solve the problem. I've got a few more things I can try, but if it keeps crashing like that, it'll be pretty much unplayable for me.
