So why is it that every single solitary MMO launched since the genre became "mainstream" (i.e. post-Everquest and mid-DAoC) falls victim to the same cycle of name-calling, doomsaying and pointless diatribe?
It's simple, really.
On the one hand, you have people who try a game before it launches (this isn't strictly limited to MMOs mind you, but for the purposes at hand...). They either expect the game or want the game to be fun. It doesn't turn out to be what they expected or wanted. They go off about it. Here's the rub; the ones most often perceived to be the trolls are the ones who seem to stake themselves, personally, on their claims. In effect, if you disagree with a troll, you're perceived to be saying that said troll is wrong. Stupid. Uninformed. Unintelligent. Crude. Unevolved. And so on and so forth.
Basically, the troll sees you attacking him and not his argument. "This person doesn't agree with me that Epileptic Platypus Online isn't the WORST MMO ever made in the history of mankind dating all the way back to the Pleistocene age? FUCK!! That's it, it's on!" so he goes to comically great lengths to defend his position (and thus himself) from attack.
Or, could be they really are just mouth-breathing socially maladjusted people with an unhealthy taste for schadenfreude.
Thoughts?

Mostly because they get baited with thread titles like this and somewhere in the post are insults thrown in.
A game is just that... a game, not an emotional crutch.
You know, the FFXIV hater trolling is bad enough without polluting the forum with completely off-topic messages.
If I had a nickel for every time the word "schadenfreude" was used... I'd have...

A shamefully joyous number of nickles?
