Since there are first and surnames, can players have the same first name or the same surname, just not both?

Unless it will change no you can't and won't see people with your name in the server even if the surname is different.
I've seen people with the same last name as me. I never saw anyone with the same first name, however I believe that it's the combination.
During beta I had a friend use the same surname as me.
Actually now that I think about it I have seen many couples have the same last name and I have seen people with the same first names. Therefore I am drawing the conclusion that it is based on the two together.

I guess the true test is if you can whisper someone with just their first name. If you can't it's probably the name as a whole.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
I think the name is unique because when I tried to make my first character I made a name randomly that sounded nice and made a surname got that it's not possible so I tried again a different surname still I couldn't and so on and so forth till I edited the name and finally I was able to create it.
You can only whisper with full name. Or at least that is what the manual says. it says /t or /tell FirstName LastName.
I'm going to go test it out right now.

I was able to make a character with the same first name different last name. So it's uniqueness should be based off of the names together. However I'm going to now try pming someone using just a first name to see, because it could be possible that you can have the same first name on the same account.

It's no problem. I'm curious too, and it doesn't take too long to get through the city intros. =D
Anyway Just tested it and the game does not recognize /t or /tell if you only use one name, first or last. The experiment is complete.
Have fun coming up with your names, I know I'm having a horrible time with it.

I just found out i'm going to be out of town during the head start and was concerned about some of the names I had in mind.
Neat, I'm going to be gone most of the first couple days of head start as well because I'll be helping my little sister move because it's her first year of college...
