Out of the MMOs you've played, which one has the best lore in your opinion

KareshKaresh Member UncommonPosts: 242

Well just like the title says, I'd like to hear which mmo (out of all the one's you've played) has the best lore and why?

For me, it would have to be Guild Wars. I always loved the game and it was filled with so much lore that there was always stuff to learn. I really liked how much story the game world had behind it, even from the beginning of the game there was already stuff to learn. Then after max level (which most of the game is after max level) there's always more lore wherever you go.

So what about you?

LotRO, of course - it's based off Tolkien.

For lore concerned only with an online game I have to say EQ1 up to the Velious expansion (my first MMO, so rose-colored glasses).  Otherwise Warhammer Online has the richest lore due to the Warhammer IP, but that's not just the online game.

LOTRO and AoC. Both lores are masterpieces and the greatest fantasy works of their time.

If you mean a lore just created for a game it is Guildwars, by far. The world makes sense in a way Wows and EQ worlds really can't compete with.

I don't agree, Mythic tea bagged one of my favorite IPs and what is in the game is not Warhammer, just some cheesy Wow lore with a little stolen Warhammer lore added.

WARs lore has nothing on the real Warhammer lore.

I've played over 75 MMO's by now, and I have to agree... LotRo has the best lore and use of the lore in each and every way.

Second runner up for me is Lineage II. Too bad most players rush through the quest-text and click "accept" without any reading (then again, this is true for most players in most MMOs)

On a side note, most (Asian) F2P MMOs have little to no lore at all. The games are mostly just one quest to an other that are completely unlinked :(

I have to agree with the last, although WAR's lore is pretty good in the game itself, it definitely doesn't stay true to the IP.

    FFXI

As far as not-pre-existing lore goes.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Until now if lore means the world, the background, the storys and myhts be they out of the real world or total fantasy it is DAOC.
    I love Midgard!

Of upcoming MMORPGS the FF XIV Beta impressed me deeply!

Easily Asheron's Call. In large part because that original development team update the game each month with new content and updated lore. They launched the game in 1999 and have only missed 3-4 months I believe as far as updating the game.

i think it's cool how we all have strong, different opinions.

My favorite is Guild Wars, each game's story was so believable it always felt like i was playing a character in a book or movie. in fact, i wouldn't be surprised if someone decided to make a guild wars movie/series.

    Everquest.

If i had to pick one, I'd say AO.  It did lore right by having a storyline in which you were just a regular dude in an extraordinary place.   You were not "the great savior / chosen one".

LoTRO and SWG obviously had excellent lore as they are based off great IPs and they both used that lore well within the context of the game and your character.  Tabula Rasa had really simple lore, but it worked really really well within the context of the game, so I consider it one of the highlights as well.

Everquest 2 has got to be some of the worst.  Stuff you read in and about the world seems to be just totally random and completely unrelated to how the characters (both PC and NPC) act and about what they do in game and things they pursue.  On the bright side, there is TONS of it.  So chances are you can find a story you like somewhere in the lore.  The problem is that the lore as a whole just doesn't make sense and makes the world harder and harder to believe in.

I am a huge fan of Robert E Howards Conan and I felt Age of Conan was very true to the setting and feel of the world - probably one of the best parts of the game in my opinion.

I never really thought about it. Though I enjoy just dreaming of my own lore cause it tends to be just like a fun puzzle.

But anywho. I'm not so sure about best, but the most fun in my opinion was the Runescape's Mahjarrat-race questlines. I love playing them.

In how many games does the lore actually explain the actual mechanics of the game?  ie: existance of multiple servers, what death means, where does magic come from and how is it limited, the ecology of creatures rewspawning, etc.  These are the details - the physics and metaphysics of the universe - I personally tend to value in lore more than the history/story.

Everyone is talking about Fantasy games with like trolls and what not what about some of the under dogs like super hero MMO's such as CIty of Heroes, CoH had 3 books and a comic book series and the lore INSIDE the game was just amazing and ontop of that a player could make his own mission arc therefore creating his own story line/lore so the stories in the game were endless which i have to say gives it the ebst lore in the MMO world, period.

How would I know... I don't read that stuff.

What I want to know, is what I need to know:

    1. How to assemble a good race-class combination

    2. How to play my class effectively

    3. Where I am supposed to start progression

    4. What cool stuff (usually dungeons) is there to do along the way

    5. How I am supposed to earn enough gold to keep on top of the gear curve

    6. What opportunities there are for socializing and grouping, perhaps finding a cool guild

If I wanted story, I'd watch a movie.

Why, exactly, did you post in this thread? Are you one of those people who like to hear themselves talk?

Anyway, out of the games I've played I enjoyed the Guild Wars lore the most. AoC's lore also made the overall theme in tha game put together very well.

    Anarchy Online pre-Shadowlands.

If you are talking strictly as a game then it is Everquest. The world was well entrenched in lore and you really had to work at changing things . It was not easy and it required a tremendous amount of work to change faction and I am talking about the game at launch and not how it might have changed after. Action had bad repercussions and you paid for killing things indiscriminately. So people observed the lore and paid attention to detail and since it was very rich that required a certain amount of actual reading of quests instead of clicking through them.

Of course if the discussion is just about lore per se then I would have to say Lord of the Rings since I loved the books when I read them in the 70's. However LotRO has done a reasonable job of it and it would come second in my view with WoW occupying third position as I enjoyed the Warcraft series very much.

I have read all LOTR and Conan books and however much I love them as stories........

Everquest1 for implementation of deep lore done with meaning that was around you and involved you at every corner,

EQ without fail if anything else was original not a rip off.
