I'd love to see an MMOFPS from Valve or ID. They could make it using a "WoWesque" model (wait wait, give me a chance) whereby the main open world is PVE, but have battlegrounds and PVP dungeons, where you can limit the player numbers to avoid the lag.
But, make it with a UO/SWG style of branching levels, where you get skill points for doing things, which you use to grow your level. Have armour and weapons only usable when you progress in your career path, and add stats to increase your DMG, Speed, Health and Armour - rather than accuracy.
A really good MMOFPS, would be amazing - making the SKILL of the player the main thing, where the player gets better at the game the more they play, rather than their character (which will happen naturally the more they play).
I'd buy it.
Edit: Why has there not been a decent one yet? Cos MMO's are made by MMO designers, not FPS designers. I've yet to find any MMO where you can scroll into first person view and not feel as though the camera is in your navel, and that your floating.
How do you have:
"making the SKILL of the player the main thing, where the player gets better at the game the more they play, rather than their character"
and
"where you get skill points for doing things, which you use to grow your level. Have armour and weapons only usable when you progress in your career path, and add stats to increase your DMG, Speed, Health and Armour"
Unfortunately imo there will never be a good "true" mmo for fps. Why? The quality of fps games cannot be emulated in an mmo, counter strike, crysis etc. I just don't personally think that the two can be combined, just take the gameplay from fallen earth and compare it to counterstrike or crysis.
The difference is pretty laughable.
Global Agenda did a decent job, but it is not an mmo in my opinion. And i would still play something like crysis or unreal tournament over global agenda in a heart beat.

Go play Face of Mankind, it's a MMORPGFPSTPS, there's a government and factions and etc etc. a REAL MMORPG.
FPS are twitch games and twitch games don't work particularly well online. Anyone who has played modern warfare, halo or battlefield bad company on xbox live or PS3 online will have experienced some lag. Mostly I barely notice it, since it's only 100th of a second but keep in mind that the battleground will only have around a dozen players or so. However, once you go above 20 people the performance begins to drop and you begin to notice the slight lag and it does begin to effect gameplay. It's pretty furstrating pulling the trigger and nothing happening and then finding yourself lying in a puddle of your own blood less than a second later.
Of course you can limit the number of people in the battleground but I think people would prefer to play the likes of modern warfare 2 on their consoles or PCs when it comes to FPS PvP. These games are pretty good and well developed as well as being cheap and accessable. For these reasons I don't see a real reason for a MMOFPS thats built around PvP. In regards to a MMORPGFPS, there are a few around such as planetside but these games seem to have a limited appeal.
If I wanted to play a MMORPGFPS I would want a game that would be fairly realistic - no crazy things such as needing 1000 bullets or a tactical nuke just to take out one guy and I think most people would feel the same way. I would also want all the things that MW2 and battlefield bad company provide as well as a full PvP. The problem is having that and still having a game that is compelling, diverse and challenging enough to make people stop play modern warfare 2 and pay $15 a month to what might turn out to be a zergfest where a good internet connection is the difference between life and death.
Arakazi, you know FoM isn't a copy of MW2? and that it doesnt use a lobby or isnt instanced?
Play the game first and argue later. And about the 1000 bullets and etc, would you like to enter a battlefield nd the first shot that hits u kills u? that'd be fucking boring.
Why dont you know about the already existing MMOFPS games that are really good?
I would definitely call Darkfall and Asherons Call really good (if you can call them MMOFPS?). Global Agenda and Face of Mankind are better for the more casual players. Oh yeah theres Fallen Earth as well.
Have you tried those?
For a long-term FPS in an MMO I would definitely go with Darkfall. The combat in this game is amazing even with the lag.

The reason being, of course, is that no one can quite agree on what a "true fps mmorpg" actually is.
Well what kind of person doesn't look at Planetside and clearly see MMO, FPS, and RPG elements? It pretty obviously fits all three criteria.
I mean I'm gonna call it an MMOFPS at the end of the day, because the primary gameplay is more FPS than RPG...but that mostly just because MMOFPSRPG is a stupidly long acronym (6-letter acronyms are bad enough already :P )

since planetside - which although its still running, its a shadow of itself, and apparently.. plagued with hackers.. i dont think there are any true fps' mmo's although there are plenty of online fps multiplayer games... i think the best of the bunch.. imo at least.. is Left 4 Dead.. which is a hillariously scary funny adrenaline packed 20 mins or so... what i would personally like to see though, is a planetside 2.. updated graphics and no BFR's... ... since hellgate london and tabula rasa and now.. apb.. hit the skids.. im not sure any company is going to risk time and money on a fps game though
An fps mmo would not work because the average fps fan is is too crude and immature to sustain a reliable community. Without a good community, the existing gamers will always run off any new gamers. FPS games delve out instant-gratification and mmo's are anything but instant-gratification.

I actually get more cooperation and camaraderie from Shooter communities, such as TF2 than the MMO's I've played in the past 5 years. When you are playing to get better at the game instead of getting an item reward that makes your stats better (thus making the game artificially easier) , I'm not sure why you would justify calling that instant gratification. One takes practice. The other takes time (or money nowadays).
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
I prefer to se my avatar and watch him improve with stats and gear over time. FPS is for when I want some mindless violence and can sit back and snipe people for hours on end. I play mmos for the rpg elements and I play fps just to blow somebody's head off I don't want to know their name or really care if they breathe just let me line them up in my sights after that they are meaningless.
Try Darkfall. It's fantasy MMORPG with an FPS/TPSlasher combat, huge world, politics, full loot and everything you need. Sure, it's pretty hardcore and it takes 1-3 months to build your toon up...
It depends on what you mean with FPS but if you mean the typical twitch gaming FPS then it would be hard to combine an RPG, where the efficiency of your character is largely based on your stats, class, experience etc, with an FPS, where it is based on how good your "twitch" skills are.
I just dont see the combination of the two work in a way that would satisfy both playstyles.

Once upon a time....
Ehh.. Face of Mankind, very good MMORPGFPS

There was allready a good fps mmo it was called Neocron and was holding my attention for over 5 years .

What this world needs is a Boderlands MMO imo
Thank you, I was hoping someone mentioned Neocron. Best game I ever played until Neocron 2 ruined everything.
