kind of random, but doesn't anyone else miss the interactive text with NPC's in EQ classic? They would say something then you would respond back about key points such as "who is BLANK" or "Where is BLANK"
honestly i feel like I have ADD with current MMO's i can't seem to follow the stories at all cuz I just gotta press a button, but maybe shtats just cuz I am special.
The truth is, MMOs advanced the way they did for a reason.
When instanced dungeons were talked about the buzz around them was generally positive all around. People on average had a bad experience in open world dungeons and wanted them to be instanced so they could acheive the goals they wanted. People didnt want to sit around a dungeon for 5 days to acheive in them. Dungeons in many games back then served as a leveling spot AND a equipment spot. In which case having them open and not instanced made sense. Was there interaction in them? Yes. But like alot of people said it was almost forced interaction. Which alot of people didnt like back then.
If im force to deal with the high level asshat that has 5 high level characters escorting around 1 and taking up all the spawns, asking them to share is almost always regarded negatively. That sucks imo. Will i become friends with him? I guess that all depends. But if its the same experience ive had, most of the time they dont share. They finish their business and leave whatever scraps around they dont want. Now say theres 5 guilds in there doing the same thing.... Sure, they might work that out between themselfs. But what about when YOUR party of adventurers are there, and ready to take the dungeon on! Now you really dont get the experience and items you want to because other people are there and essentially interfering. Now your not rolling between 6 people. Your rolling around 6 x 5 people actually trying to get that item or camp those mobs for experience.
So the thought of having instanced dungeons naturally came around in the progression of mmorpg's. Which is something that i still think is great. As well as having dungeons that arent. There were many caves in wow that played like dungeons but very small scale where you could still find interaction like others are talking about. The main dungeons were instanced. Which was a REASON i was excited about wow back then. It was a plus. And it still is imo..
I think old MMO's were far better than today's in just about every single aspect. The dungeons were really full of excitement and wonder. There was just so much great content hidden around in some of the dungeons.
I remember in Everquest, i was with a group in Najena and three of us fell through a false floor and landed in a LOCKED jail cell with mobs patrolling around us. There was no way out since we did not have a rogue or a bard and we had to tell the other group members to run and find someone who could pick a lock and get us out. I think we ended up sitting in that cell for around an hour or so just talking and joking around cause we were trapped. Finally someone came and got us out thankfully but i still look back on that memory as totally awesome. We didn't know at the time, but a jailer actually held a key to that cell and if we would have killed it, well we would have been free. Oh, and the people i was trapped with, they were really cool and i had a blast hanging out with them in that little cell. Stuff like that doesn't really happen today in MMO's.
These instanced dungeons have little danger in them. I mean, if you die all you have to do is run back to the zone line and wallah you got your junk! That isn't challenging, it is just boring. You don't even have to talk to your group and if you do, you may or may not have someone reply. Had me and the few others died in that jail cell in Najena, we might have never gotten our stuff back. That was the thrill and excitement of it. The fact that there was a hidden floor that led right to a cell was something we never thought to look for and we paid for it. In these current MMOs, there is no danger.
Also the quests now adays suck!
Luke says "Go kill me some wolves, thanks bye."
That is pretty much it. There are very rarely any WORTHWHILE stories in these quests and they feel unoriginal and are boring. A quest in Everquest never really told you where to go or what to kill, you had to find that info out yourself. The quest for Ghoulbane in Everquest was so long and hard to figure out, but it was fun and in the end, you got a really good weapon (especially if you were fighting undead!) Although by today's standards, Ghoulbane would not be very wanted in any MMO, old or new. But back then, that thing was really killer. Later i also found out you could have camped a mob for Ghoulbane but i was proud to have quested it and figured it out on my own.
Here is a link to the quest. (some typos in the quest text)
Things always look greener in the rearview because the view is fertilized with bullshit.
Seriously though I think there are games out now that have dungeons like those of old. Vanguard has some good dungeon crawls. As does EQ2. Conan has a couple I really like. I did love AC's though. Game was much better than EQ imo.
Yet EQ2 and Vanguard are getting long in the tooth as well so the Next Gen needs to come on already lol
Naaa you missed it man. I can attest that one zone alone in Black Burrow was more fun than the whole of wow. Ever seen a train and get into that fight at the zone and get knocked out the zone by a darkpaw and thinking you are safe because you almost died only to zone in on the otherside to see someone trained the deadbones from the crypt into the cave hahahaha!
Or, Oasis and have the orc trains running all over, the failed Spectre party trains and the Giants. Or, or being in that swamp waiting to get into Cazic andthe bouncer runs up trained in back slapping people all over, or, or.... I could just go on an on.
Lolo, the good old days of Black Burrow,it was the first Dungeon i ever entered in EQ1. I think Vanguard comes close to EQ1 with it's non instanced dungeons.
One of my favorites in Vanguard is Trickster Haven aka The Buried Gallery of Al'Rahid.
