I just read an article about Neverwinter, the upcoming CORPG by Cryptic, that peeked my interest.
Anybody ever played Neverwinter Nights from Bioware, also on one of the playermade server worlds? The toolset that came with Neverwinter Nights was something amazing and awe inspiring for its sheer possibilities.
That idea may have a sequel, as this article shows:
So, to start off, how's Neverwinter work, exactly? Is it an MMO? Is it a smaller-scale type of thing? Some sort of middle ground between the two?
Jack Emmert: Imagine Borderlands. Imagine Borderlands with ongoing monthly content, where players can generate missions and quests for each other with a terrific toolset.
How's the mission and quest line creation fit into that? Can players expand on existing plot lines within the game? Are the tools similar to those seen in the Neverwinter Nights games from BioWare and Obsidian?
Certainly, the main storyline would be like that. However, the difference would be that players can sort of find various hooks throughout our game to connect their user-generated content. They don't need to, but that's an option.
Well, we'll have to see how it'll go, but if they manage to create a flexible toolset for player generated content as Neverwinter Nights had but then within a current-state Neverwinter, they might have something interesting in their hands. For a CORPG, that is.

The "Forge" tools - funny how many people out there are wondering if it will be like CoX's Mission Architect - even though Cryptic sold CoX to NCsoft in Nov '07 and MA did not get released until Apr '09 at the same time that NCsoft NorCal became Paragon.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
Explorer: 87%, Killer: 67%, Achiever: 27%, Socializer: 20%
basically what cryptic is saying is:
"yeah NWNO will suffer from the same disease that riddles our games, a mindnumbing lack of content. But unlike with our other games we arent even gonna bother to rush some post-launch patches adding a bit more content. go make your own instead while you keep paying us"
Well to be fair, Cryptic isn't bad at developing unique ideas and good games. They're just bad a year later when they have to expand the game. At that point they launch a fucking nuke and destroy the game, effectively turning it into shit. First year is always solid though.
Too early to tell I havent ven seen a screenshot yet
I really kind of doubt borderlands is the kind of image they want to bring up, cause when their crappy excuse of a game comes out and I was thinking "imagine borderlands" I'm probably going to burn me a studio down. Not that I would buy the game, I'm just kind of dissappointed they would try to mooch off what turned out to be one of my favorite games. Of course Cryptic would have to mooch off a game with rediculously quality production value considering their last couple... titles I suppose is the best word considering what I would actually like to type would be almost illegible with $%@&! symbols.
So it's like they're leaving the content-making to the players? Personally, I think the idea of making your own quests is good. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Hey, even tho I critizised Cryptic many times, I still see they CAN make something interesting. CO had some strengths and wasn't all bad, and even STO had it'S good points. It was just mired, basically, by being released WAY too early and too much relying on copy-paste content, esp. STO. If they avoid these, Neverwinter could be good.

They will let you make your own content, they will also charge you for all the little npcs and props to make that content as well no doubt.
'I want to make a dungeon with a dragon at the end!!!'.... C-Store - Dragon Boss = 5000 Craptic points.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
Don't give them ideas like this
Neverwinter Nights from the beginning when it first came out a few years ago, had the goal of bringing back the glory days of yore when people played D&D on the tabletop with pen and paper, and also figurines, with either game modules provided by D&D or those the Dungeon Masters created.
Such flexibility is why Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 did so well as a PC game.
Hell, I even made a Middle Earth server back when it first came out, including Moria and people were begging me with foam in their mouths to let them play on it.
Now....the fact that its Cryptic and not Bioware causes me much concern...................
This. Sorry OP, but after Jack **edit**ed me on STO, I will never trust anything that man says again.
EXACTLY!!!
100% agreement. turning the nwn into a 'sims like' toolset is what i predict.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

This is just an early reveal. You just wait, the plan is first, we make our own content, but for their next trick, we get to create our own character models from scratch. Their final reveal will be that we get to debug the game code.
Honestly though, I'm very interested to see what they come up with. Never thought I'd consider giving cryptic a 2nd chance after the let down of CO, but, I'm considering it. Lets see what they come up with.
I don't see them doing anything innovative let alone using a system that was used before, this will fail somehow. Cryptic is REALLY GOOD at making a game you can enjoy for a couple of days/weeks but unfortunately seem to slap their caps and walk out the door when it comes to keeping their games alive.
I really want to put trust into Cryptic but they keep playing graba$$ with the customers wallets instead of focusing on making that $15 a month worth it.
Not going to happen.
I have played only 1 Cryptic game, Star Trek Online, and from that experience, I'd have to disagree. It was never good when it came out, and though it hasn't hit 1 year of going live, it's not much better either.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
I'll wait and see what it looks like and how it plays before assuming it is going to be bad.
I'm actually going to assume it's going to be bad without playing it. Cryptic did some pretty insulting things to the Star Trek IP. Staying true to the spirit of DnD seems unlikely.
Imagine Biowares NWN with a monthly fee, I played at some playermade worlds and had fun but I wouldn't want to pay 15 bucks a month for that.
I think Cryptic have the general idea right but I am pretty sure that they will mess it because they are greedy. Monthly fees and or a huge cash shop would kill the game.
Besides that should they at least be able to do an acceptable game, they are not as good as Bioware but they are not worse than Obsidian at least.
Wait what....Sub fee's? F THAT, People would be better off playing Bioware's Neverwinter.

What made NWN good is the ability to make levels. But also to act as DM
Without DM , it would be just another game editor.
And although its not yet specified (they dodge that question constantly) i dont think there will be DM in Cryptic NWN
Hmm, I'm not so big on the whole game company-hating thing or on following hype or hate trends, I tend to look at each game itself. I've never played STO, but from what I understand from the recent articles Cryptic seems to have come a long way in improving things with STO, much in the same way that AoC had been improved a lot in the 2 years since launch. But I can understand that ST fans consider STO to be far from how they pictured their MMO to be, after all, I think it's difficult to capture that specific ST vibe into a MMORPG.
I did play CO however, and even if it didn't have enough content for the very longterm, I still had a great time and enjoyed myself with it, the graphics style and environments were distinctly different from other MMO's and gave you that comic vibe, the customisation was great, the combat challenging and engaging, and the missions and quests fun.
And that was also a game of Cryptic.
I don't expect Neverwinter to be as flexible as Neverwinter Nights was - I don't expect there to be player made serverworlds, for example - but I'm a big proponent for the possibility of player generated content in MMO's. If they can manage to provide more flexible tools than is provided in current MMORPG's, I'd consider it one of the unique features and selling points.

Agreed. I wouldn't pay a sub for a glorified Borderlands.
Except Neverwinter isn't an mmo, so you'll still be waiting for that.
