Is anyone else a bit disappointed by this game?

I mean this as a humble opinion, and just as that "my opinion."  So by no means is this meant to be a Troll post.  I have been a long time fan of the FF series,  ever since  FF2 on the SNES.  I have played all the games, and especially loved FF XI.   I am also an avid fan of MMO's,  and have played all the major ones that have been released since EQ 1.  I know this game is still in an early stage, and much will get done to improve it, but I don't think I have the patience.  I feel that SE, like a lot of other companies these days, released a game that is in an unfinished state.  And now it seems that they want the computer people to pay-for-beta, so they can release a good product on the PS3 next year.

Now  with the global rescission, I can understand them wanting to increase their profits so their company looks good to the shareholders.  But to release the stinker that was FF XIII ( I had such high hopes for that game too) and then to follow up with this, at best, archaic console excuse of an mmo is just bad business.  Why could they not make an interface that was a bit more computer friendly?  Would it really be that hard?  Sure the graphics are realistic and good, but they remind me a lot of EQ2 at release.  Pretty, but lacking any details or substance to really make them shine.  And when it comes to Content, well all see right now is grinding the same boring quests, or crafting endless pieces of junk.

I know a lot of you like this game, and I wish I could be there with you guys.  I mean, am I missing something or should I just wait for this game to get better?  I did not get a CE,  but I have a buddy key and am playing now.  I was also in the OB, and I felt the same way then.  I find it funny that a lot of ppl said that a "bunch" of new content would come with release, but we all knew that was a joke.  Does anyone have some constructive comments on this topic?  Am I alone in thinking that SE has dropped the ball once again with this FF?

Thanks

What I saw of the game was good.  It wasn't good enough to make me want to wrestle with the interface though.

I am also dissapointed. The horrendous UI (and don't give me excuses about gamepads, this isn't rocket science to make a PC game with a good interface using the keyboard/mouse), the crashing when you alt-tab out, the lifeless towns, repetitive enviroments, poor performance (on a quad core 3,700mhz and a GTX460), etc. I am not writing off the game completely, some of these things can be fixed within a few months BUT Square has always been slow to fix things in their past MMOs. Don't expect a highly polished MMO (which is sad that in 2010 you have to lower your expectations) and you may have some fun.

You are not alone in thinking this, anyone with an objective viewpoint will concede the game has some issues. Only fanboys will claim this is the greatest game ever and has no problems at all. But I won't be subbing past the first month (unless they somehow fix some of these things in record time) but I will keep my eye on it.

It is like always: If a game isn't fun in open beta, it won't be at launch and probably never will (see Vanguard, Champions etc.). If you read things like "Miracle Patch will fix all, we're playing an old build!", "22 GB content at release!" or "performance is just poor because of debugging software running in the background!" , it's clear as day, that every sane customer should avoid such a game like the plague.  Things like these almost never get fixed and even if they are after a year, the game has already gone down the drain. This ist just another example.

=D Personally I didn't have any EXTREME emotions that lasted longer than a couple hours and that was mostly during patching.

In terms of the game, it has everything on my top 5 things I want list. And doesn't have anything on my top 5 things I'll kill myself if I have to put up with list.

I have to admit, I was majorly disappointed during testing.  I, like many others, struggled with the interface.  I didnt do much testing at all to be honest because of this and went back to playing games like Aion and Age of Conan.

Just recently I started playing SUN again which didnt last long, and I re-activated my EQ2 account only to find myself bored to death

Eventually I got burned out on Aion and Age of Conan (for the third, maybe fourth time?) and started playing some Lord of the Rings Online..again...until I got burned out on that also.  None of these spontaneous game subs lasted me more than 2 weeks, and most I found myself not logging in within just days.

I found something in common with all of these games and it was the interface and quest systems.  Theyre not identicle, but theyre very similiar.  After you get behind the wheel and start zoning in on levelling, you almost forget what game world you're in.

Then I thought back to my Ultima Online years, my Asherons Call years, the early stages of Everquest and started comparing it to what i was seeing with FF XIV.  I wasnt comparing it in a way that I was trying to find similiar "game elements", but how I felt playing those games when they first came out compared to how I was feeling with FF XIV.

Make long stories short, Im glad now that FF XIV didnt turn out the way I was hoping it would initially with fast paced action, point and click pez dispenser quest NPC's and an interface that conformed with the standards.  It feels like MMO's did when I first started playing them, when developers were trying to set what the standards were and what the best way was to get a player into their game world.

I gave FF XIV another shot, and trying to look at it from a different perspective.  Theres still a lot of inovation there, but theyve also managed to bring back a lot of what I missed in older MMO's while attempting something new.  I really hope I see more MMO's break this hotkey bar, button cycling skill rotation, pez dispenser NPC and pushpin map objective location mold thats been set for the past 7 years now.  Its about time.

I love smaller communities too.  I played Saga of Ryzom for years.  The community is nice, but they don't seem that vocal.  Maby its the JP, maby they are in link shell, but I miss some General banter.

Are you talking about FFXIV or Saga of Ryzom? If it's FFXIV did you get this during CB/OB or since Wednesday? Because people have been a lot more vocal, at least it seems to me since release. However if you are on one of the servers that are mostly Japanese that may be the problem.

I usually get people to respond when I talk to them, and haven't encountered this problem .

I am right there with you on classic MMO feel, and FFXIV does have that.  And I have missed that in the scope of WoW clones and such.  I love that aspec about FFXI as well.    I will play the game, and who know, maybe I'll get into it more.  Is there any place like The Dunes in this game, is there a point where we have to get togehter with others to play?  I certainly don't see a lot of ppl LFG to share their quest yet.  Idk, but I really appriciate all your imput.

I agree it has a different feel to it and thats one of the things that really drawn me to this game (also started MMO'S with EQ1)

On new releases especially in regards to MMO's theres always going to be a cross-over between beta and release (especially with a pc version) as there are so many variables within the community itself to be addressed, Hardware/software compatibility and player ingenuity being the two things that come to mind, i'm sure there are more that I can't think of.

I'm fairly comfortable with whats in the game right now and I'm sure that SE will be adding to it and making improvements in good time and thats the main reason why I purchased the CE and didn't wait.

Others will feel differently and they should probably wait and see what happens with the game.

This isn't a decision that anyone has to make right now.

Hopefully the game will grow on you as you use your buddy key but at the end of your time if you have any concerns I would definately suggest looking back into it in a few months as it seems to have alot of potential.

As to grouping my playtime is extremely casual and I haven't really had a chance to do any but I'm leaning towards a like minded linkshell and possibly a static group for weekend play since thats when i'll be playing mostly.

If getting a group in game is a problem I would check out http://www.ffxivcore.com/ as they have server specific forums for linkshell recruitment.

I'm not really sure how pug friendly the game is at this point as its still really new to most people.

Maybe I'm just nitpicking .. but I think they could have done better especially whenver you level up.  I mean is it me or the whoe guildleve completion is over the top.  a nice big fanfare sounds - glowing aura coming out of the ground .. that should have been the stuff whenver you LEVEL up.  instead whenver you ding a level  it is like sitting next to your girlfriend and she let out a silent queef.. and your like.. huh " what was that?? ..

I'm guessing it would have been too hard to take three seconds to read one of the numerous threads related to how people don't like the game. Whatever. I'm enjoying it, I'm getting into crafting which is dificult but rewarding. I'm waiting to see how long it takes to make anything good.

I'm not saying I didnt like the game. I'm quite enjoying myself .. but at the moment I'm bored to death from mining, next to some avatar named "Jenna Haze" and "Avocado Pizza" .. so I'm here browsing around.

no bank - no house - your bag fills up fast, specially when you have multiple prof and class going. even my retainer is filled up.  forcing you to buy more retainers or buy character slots.. well not forcing you but limiting your options.

As someone who also started with the classics (EQ, AC, UO, etc) I can understand your sentiments, but I wouldn't say that FFXIV really does anything to break the mold in that sense (in regards to the underlined statement). They give you  access to a hotbar, along with two bars for macros, and from my experience with the combat (as multiple melee disciplines) it seemed like the same ol' spam/rotate system that are present in countless mmos these days. The combat system is actually the main reason I decided not to play; I don't really see much innovation there.

I don't think FFXIV brings anything new too mmo's but it does bring a different style of game play which I think alot of westerners game players don't like. MMO's have really changed in the last five years with game stores and free to play and  botting.

I find theres seems to be alot of choice for mmo gamers but theres not. Its always tank/dps/healers even if its from DC to Eve too EQ2. You don't see mmo's like Roma Victor anymore or a Dune mmo. CCP was supposed to be working on a vampire mmo when will that be done.

It does in fact appear to me to be the greatest game ever, from what I can tell at this point, and it's clear it's only going to get better.

However, nobody, not even me who is in love with this game, claims it has no problems at all.

Let me ask you this- since when did the MMORPG AAA Title release bar get set to "No problems at all".  This is the smoothest release of a AAA title yet, and yet it's not good enough?

Last I checked, the typical bar was set at "If you can play the game on a non crashing server and interact with items without getting stuck within a week, you're lucky."  Because that's basically how every single MMORPG has launched.

But no this one has to be perfect.  Forget the fact that the servers are successfully juggling a thousand people in one area and you're still able to play the game as intended and none of them are crashing.

SE is funny in that they actually make quality games and tackle the most important problems first.  Alt-tab will cause the game to crash curently, but you can run it in windowed so there's not really an issue.

Hmm do we want stable servers or do we want them fixing the simple thing with alt-tabbing?  Hmmmmmmm....

As for lifeless towns I really have to suspect you're not even playing the game.  People are EVERYWHERE on my server.  NPCs also add a nice touch and are there for purely rp purposes.  There are way more "characters" in a ffxiv town than a WoW town.  I really don't know what you're talking about here.

The enivornments seem about as repetative as any other mmorpg I've ever played, only they look way the hell better.

Chess is actually the greatest game ever if we're going to get serious about this thing.

How exactly is this game in an unfinished state?  I'm sitting here playing it right now, and other than the fact that it does feel as if it's going to be a bit of a grind, imo, it does not feel unfinished.  Does it feel as though it has the depth of FFXI?  No.  But 3 days release vs. 7-8 years...  Of course there isn't going to be as much content.  But how much content do you really need from level 1-11? (Where I'm currently at.)  Further more, tell me ONE mmo that isn't a grind?  They all are and going into this, you shouldn't really expect any different.

As far as the UI goes... If you've played FF since the beginning, shouldn't you be used too and expect all the menus?  Personally, I feel as though this game is more representative of the FF series than FFXI.  It took me YEARS to get into FFXI because, once again this is my opinion, it DID NOT feel like the rest of the series.  I eventually came around to it, but right off the bat, FFXIV feels like FF to me.  Disappointed?  No.  Excited for the life and evolution of this game?  Absolutely.

I'm blown away with disappointment for this game.  I'm not a FF fan per say, although I do enjoy their games when they are good, but I was/am a FFXI fan.  I'm of the personal belief that the only people who are happy with this game are either very patient and enduring to the point of a saint or they are blinded by their fanism.  I wish this game were still in alpha stages.  I'm pretty sure that I'd be pleasantly happy with the outcome if that were true.

  • WSIMikeWSIMike Member Posts: 5,564

    I wouldn't say "disappointed"...

I'd say I'm underwhelmed at this point.

Was running around tonight with a couple friends and thinking, "you know... I'm just not 'feeling it" with this game..."

There's something "missing" from FFXIV that FFXI always had - and still has to this day. It's not a "fond memory of my first MMO" thing, since FFXI was not at all my first MMO... was actually my 3rd. It was the first that grabbed me, pretty much from my first few steps in Vana'diel and didn't let go... to this day.

If anything... FFXIV has made me want to play XI more lol.

One thing I can say... FFXIV feels too "safe" to me. Everything feels like it's just a bit too easily within grasp. The first run to Jeuno was a challenge. A serious, difficult challenge.. which is why it seems anyone who's played FFXI long enough will have vivid and fond memories of that very first trip. It was dangerous.. following the "main road" didn't guarantee your safety. You didn't have the map for the more difficult areas along the way. Getting to Jeuno for the first time is a milestone in the "career" of any FFXI character, and it's memorable for a reason.

Getting to Ishtar in XIV on the other hand? Just follow the clearly marked road, and you can make it to the gates of Ishtar, or any of the other cities, with only travel time to worry about. Same with traveling from one starting city to another... too safe and "convenient". I think maybe that's an element of my impression of the game overall at this point.. among other things. Eorzea so far feels very "safe and sterile" to me.

I'm gonna give XIV a bit more time to bake, I think.

I'll give you four quickly that had very, very few problems at launch, those that did exist were extremely minor(by even non-mmo game release standards):

    LOTRO

    EQ2

    Guild Wars

    City of Heroes/City of Villains(both)

FFXIV is no anarchy online on launch day but it definitely makes the list for one of the worst launches of all time.  Hopefully it will improve like AO did overtime, maybe then it will be worth putting my hard earned money towards.

TBH after square merged and becomes SE. FF series went downwards, it is souless unlike pre-merge FF (FF7,8 etc). Cant say i'm dissappointed with FF14. One thing though (and i know the trolls will bring this up) payment options~! There I said it. Why no direct payment? Why must I pay to third party company (with extra charge i might add). It's just ridiculous.

Agreee with your first comments (waiting a few moths to try ff14 though). And would like to add that they also completely ruined the Secret of Mana series (and never ported or re-released SD3). The only post SNES FF I really enjoyed was 9... oh well
