Hi there,
I was wondering if there is a tool/site where you can compair the size of landscapes in MMO's...
I ask this because I used to play SWG before I heard of WoW and now I cancelled my SWG account and am eagerly waiting for my WoW box (I live in europe so still some time to go). The only thing I am wondering is how large WoW is compaired to SWG (since SWG was really huge imo)...

There is a website that did do a comparison of total playable land surface in all major MMORPGs. I can't find the link right now.
WW2Online is suppose to have the largest playable land area.
Then Star Wars Galaxies.
Then Everquest.
Then Anarchy Online.
WoW has just came out so no one knows for sure what its total playable land area is. (Have their game DEVs made any statements about it?) But It definatly is not equal to, or larger than SWG. Each planet in SWG has the same surface area as the complete Everquest main world.

But Star Wars Galaxies environments were bland and boring (except for tatooine. Then again, I playing in desert environments) and WoW has a lot more fun stuff crammed into it, whereas every SWG city looked similar on the same planet.
I´ve read that the world is like 900 Km^2 or something like that. I don´t remember it perfectly, but I remember that the size of DnL´s world was 44 times bigger, so I supose that it must be 900Km^2.
The MMOG with the largest area is WW2O. The largest MMORPG is SWG, and after that Horizons. SWG has like 2100Km^2 and horizons was near 1000Km^2. EQ was around 120Km^2.
The next "bigger MMORPG" will be Dark and Light with their 40000Km^2 enormous world and amazing anviroments. (Just a little spam, forgive me)
Well thats all great, but I guess you people forgot Dark and Light... only 40000hm squared.
Eve/Vendetta/Jumpgate all have the smallest with 0m2 of landscape

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...
SWG is definatly larger in scale compared to WoW.
Except when you look at SWG... it's large in scale with NOTHING!
You'll travel kilometers far from civilization, find 1 base in the middle of nowhere. Travel another few kilometers away, you'll see a change in environment ... but that same environment spawns for another couple of kilometers away.
SOE made SWG huge and empty because they were planning to add player cities since the beginning.
The only planet which is very well detailed is Dathomir. And SOE was able to make Dath that detailed with lots of different plants and dark forestry because no one can build houses to disturb the environment.
Unlike WoW which may be smaller than SWG, but still huge for a MMORPG. But all areas are different. Every new place you will discover has so many things to awe and drool over.
What SOE did is not bad, they made a lot of empty landscapes for the players to build stuff, and is the reason you should not compare the size of SWG with WoW. WoW is already huge enough as time passes by, you won't be able to wait until you can afford to buy a mount just to get from one place to another because it's big enough. Any larger and all you'd be doing when playing WoW is walking instead of fighting and doing quests. lol

Stealth - Ambush - Hemorrhage - Sinister Strike x2 - Cold Blood - Eviscerate - Vanish - Preparation - Cold Blood - Ambush - ... you're dead! :P
At least make an attempt at the truth. You claim there is absolutly nothing in SWG LOL! Geee um... so all those cities on the planets are fake then? They do not really exist?
SWG on purpose made the wilderness feel like.... *drumroll* ..... a wilderness! That is why it is called "wilderness"! And civilization feel like.... *another drumroll* ...... civilization. The cities are large enough to feel like cities. Many planets have 3 - 5 huge cities. Other "öutback" planets have 2 or more bases on them. Some planets have cities and bases.
And yes SWG on purpose made the wilderness large to accomodate player houses, player cities, and other player structures. One of the most fun aspects of SWG is building your house, store, or industrial complex... on beachfront property, or high in some mountains, or in a forest, or swamp, or on an island, high on a cliff, by a river, at the bottom of a canyon, etc...
Does WoW allow players to mine resources while offline, or off adventuring? No. And it can't have such a revolutionary feature because it's playable landarea is far smaller than SWG.
Just like in real life if you drive accross many states in America, they are almost empty, while other states show more signs of civilization... so it is with SWG. Iowa vs New York City. Idaho vs Los Angeles. Etc.. etc...

I agree - SWG open areas are nice to walk through - remember walking? And besides, very often you find unexpected things, like houses, temples, ruins, and caves. Just the feeling of running across the terrain trying to get to that resource waypoint, or running from stormtroopers, coming up on a city and hearing the roar of engines overhead - It makes it feel very realistic. There are always things to find out in the wilderness. I'd like to see more games with open areas like SWG's. It's about the only really cool thing left in the game.
Anyway, each planet in SWG is about 16km x 16km = 256 km^2 x ten planets ~ 2560 km^2 = lots of open area.
See. Size does matter.
Seriously though. It's not about how much space you have, it's what you do with it. I can't count how many hours I spent playing Space Invaders. It essentially has one location. I still had a blast.
I played SWG, and yes, it was big. Luckily, I got bored of it so fast that I didn't have to waste so many hours wandering around from place to place.
Remember walking? Yeah, I remember walking. I remember walking around, or skating around rather, saying, "damn I can't wait till I get my driver's licence so it doesn't take me 2 hrs to get to Scott's house to play D&D". Once I got my license, we could go to the mall, play some video games, and then cruise back and have time to play D&D most of the day. They have video games that incorporate those types of things: video gaming, and D&D. How many hiking video games have you played? I've only played one, and I won't be going back.

Or are they? Perhaps they are infinite.
Hmmmm.
Debate time!
