I have a lvl 10 toon with lvl 1 gear. I noticed this is a common trend among a majority of other players. In my estimation, there are several reasons for this:
1) Hardly any gear-based rewards
2) Too time consuming to master all crafting and gathering skills which leads from independence to interdependence in acquiring materials and crafting gear
3) No centralized hub to buy and sell raw materials or finished goods (i.e.- Auction House)
Basically, this forces me to stop progressing in exploration and leveling. Instead, I'm forced to spend countless hours leveling my crafting skills, researching receipes, and gathering resources which are things I dont enjoy.

Or spend 3 seconds buying the gear from someone who enjoys crafting?
The real problem is crafter's can't get the materials they require to make the components to make the gear. Partially due to player ignorance on whats actually needed, and another part due to how the system is designed.
For Example A Weaver needs Rubber Soles to make boots. Rubber Soles are made by alchemists at level 1. To make Rubber soles, Alchemists need Brimstone. Brimstone is made by level 11 Goldsmiths.
I never see brimstone for sale so I can make rubber soles, and its hard to find anyone who'll make it. And because of that, we have a huge shoes shortage.
I cannot stress how accurate this answer is. Of all the complaints about the game, OP's "I want gear, gib me new gearz plox," is by far the weakest.
Additionally, over half of the game's content is crafting, so if you don't like crafting you're kind of SOL.

I say we strike all users from the site for not being MMOs.
For me crafting is very essential to a game. I had five crafters in Vanguard which had a punishing system and about 7 in EQ 2 for evil and good sides to boot. Gave me a huge edge. If you do not like crafting you have to wait until others who do figure out the system and start selling. Otherwise pick it up yourself.
Give it time FFXI economy was based on crafting too. Most of the US players didn't notice that because well the game was already out for 1 year in japan.
so it would mean you guys need to work more on your craft right? plus new games tend to have problems in the economy till they have more people working on it, plus you all are still in 1 week adv over the rest of the people, the bulk of people who should come tomorrow can help,
and from what I notice in the OB only way for you get equips here is or prize from leves or crafted, even eard the only drop bosses have are to craft equips and you don't have recipes, you guys have a lot of work to do ^^
It takes time for games with complex crafting systems to get going. I can recall WoW at launch many just getting to 60 with very basic gear sets, though now of course you can get to 80 with epics. MMO are long term projects, SE will patch a lot of content in, the game will have console release, and the economics will slowly develop, I have to admit an AH would speed it up..but not much now as people are still working out crafting and gathering.
Not surprising, given SE's typical approach to things. They are so hysterically trying to not be WoW like, that they are cutting off their nose to spite their(players) face. No doubt they will have some measure of success in Japan and with their dedicated player base, but their attitude will prevent them from gaining anything like the numbers they would have other wise. If they and their investors are happy with that, then more power to them <shrug>
Bingo. It just needs time. I myself though, through going from city to city, grabbing leves that have gear rewards, have almost a full set of non lvl 1 gear at marauder level 8 physical level 12. There is stuff out there, it s just not as easy as finding a glowing exclamation point over a npc s head. I actually started crafting up some food with + to Attack and craftmanship, which are a super easy lvl 1 culinary recipe and selling them for about 500 gil a piece. The mats cost me about 225 a piece. That said I haven t even farmed for the mats I needed for that but now I know what drops them at a fairly good rate, so it s all profit now.
Well players didn't notice it because FFXI had some kind of AH. Without some sort of auction house it will be a real pain in the ass to craft in FFXIV. A blacksmith in this game will need mats from every other professions and with the current system you will not see too many successful crafter. Crafting is pretty complex here, where everyone will need stuff from others.
But SE said an AH will be in the game after the economy has stabilised probably after the first month the auction house will be implemented.
???? I've had zero trouble getting gear.. it took about 4-5 crafting leves to get me to rank 7 carpenter and I made my self a lvl7 maple wand from two items (Maple branch and alpha growth something), after that I've not really bothered with crafting I just purchase gear.
I've changed gear a few times now currently in r14 since rank9, one point I purchased a copper helm for 8k then 1 hour later bought a hooded robe which I found I couldn't wear both so I put the helm up for sale at 8k again even after wearing it and sold it within 2 mins just standing in town collecting leves.
Gear is not too bad price wise either (at least on besaid) the r14 robes go for around 14-17k, which is nothing really as an exchanged 5min leve rewards around 15k solo, even more if you're grouped.
I have had no desire to play FFXIV. But more and more the negative posts that are created are actually making me want to play this game.
First I heard no auction house and I thought "Man it's about time someone went back to a non-AH MMO, I friggin hate AHs and how they dumb down a game." That alone was not enough for me to want to try it. Now I hear "People can't go solo and grind up levels without having their gear suffer." That sounds great to me. I hate games where you can run off solo and 10 minutes later have some pretty good gear for your level, no work involved. I'm not sure if that is yet enough for me to try it, but it is getting closer.
In my Linkshel people have begun to gear up nicely. Why because we help eachother with materials and crafting. Game has been out for what 7 days now? it takes time for the nice gear to start appearing. Like i said, impatient people will always find something to complain about.
FFXIV economy is player generated so you can't expect to see nice stuff within a week. And if you really that desperate, join a good linkshell and try to socialize.
Actually, this is not a common trend among a majority of players. Take some time and check JP players. They are decked out.
I find it rather interesting that a factual piece of information (above) is completely ignored in favor of either blindly agreeing with the OP, or just dismissing him with a very generic (and apparently inaccurate) statement of crafting fixes the problem.
A simple question on my mind is whether Kaisen_Dexx is accurate. If so, then SE needs to look at ways to make the crafting economy more effective. Requiring level 11 materials to craft a level 1 good seems rather problematic in the short term, and may remain problematic long term.
They don't need an AH. They just need a better way to search for things. Nobody (okay maybe a few) wants to search through player stores for hours in the hopes that they will find that one item. Atlantica Online had a search feature for player run stores. I'm sure it's not that hard to implement. Yes, it kind of defeats the purpose, but surely they can't expect players to sort through 100s of player stores to find an item. Why the aversion to an AH in the first place? Scared the gilsellers will screw the economy like they did in FFXI? That's going to happen when XIV becomes more popular. Not much you can do.
Another thing that annoys me is how heavily one craft depends on another. It was the same way in FFXI. It wouldn't be so bad if the item you were trying to craft had components that were of the same rank as the item you're making. There's no reason level 3 pants take level 8 components to make. It will take a huuuuuuuuuuge amount of time and gil to make the crafts worthwhile at higher levels. Also, why in the hell is there no recipe book? So now we have to depend on outside game resources to figure out recipes. Whoever wins the arms race and starts producing HQ gear will be instantly rich, but it's just far too annoying right now for some people to bother with.
What annoys me the most is SE seems like they have learned nothing from their first venture into this genre a decade ago. FFXIV is almost a carbon copy of XI, but the copy is faded and has all of the same problems the original had. I've about given up on this company. I've been a fanboy since I was a kid playing the original FF on the NES, but SE is so stubborn that they purposely design wonky shit just to stand out from the crowd. It doesn't matter if it's terrible and un-fun. They do whatever-the-hell they feel like doing despite customers groaning and saying please no.
Um its not that they're anti wow, FFXI's economy was like this and that was before wow, gear is made by the crafters not rewards from quests. It takes time for crafters to level their craft and demand for gear is high since the game JUST came out.
That's simply not true. There was very little high end crafted gear that people wanted. Good gear dropped off of mobs just like it does in WoW.
After it has "stablized"?... In other words, the AH code wasn't ready for launch, so thats what they are claiming for an excuse. Come on now, the lack of a decent AH is going to hold back crafting for quite awhile(perhaps such is intended?). Look at how little official information there was in the early stages of FF XII.
I took the crafting approach and even printed out pages of recipes to begin to make some armor for my Rank 9 lancer... The only thing holding me back is finding a good way to farm Fire Crystals Can't make my bronze nuggets without them, and I havent gotten any in days!
How can you say that?
With an AH people can increase the cost of items as they want by buying the cheap to sell higher making it hard for new people to get anything.
Not saying it can't happen with stalls but it's much harder for it to work out unless this guy goes in every city every x hours to buy the cheap things so he can sell them higher.
I agree they need an auction house even if it makes it a bit harder, because it is really too hard to find anything I am looking for.
Also FFXIV Lacks a crafting list in game which is really stupid and a reason i may quit the game why not give us a simple crafting list click what we want to craft Nuggets > Gold Nugget > Requirements > Insert in box > Craft
Looking this stuff up online, not being able to ALT + TAB from the game is stupid.
While i agree that the lack of an ingamne list makes crafting more complicated did it not really hinder me so far i just started my own recipe book and look up stuff when i need it.
Finding out recipes is actually fun for me.
I SO agree with that.
