Obviously I have an interest in it. I played in beta and got a buddy key.
I also think that the people that criticize the game (like me) do more to help the game than people that praise the game constantly (like you). Not that there isn't an argument that neither of us is having any effect. But you did list wanting it to improve as one of the reasons you post.
I also post often in religious/political forums while I post here. So, I sit here with itchy leg keeping my brain occupied until I can walk around more easily.
Nice assumption there but its alright. Your leg is itchy and so are you. I don't want to indulge you, unforutanetly i don't have unilimited time to burn. looks like i hit a nerve.
Now excuse me so that i can get back to discussing game again.
Uhh, you asked me.
And no, you didn't hit a nerve. I actually thought you needed that explained to you. Maybe you didn't want the question answered. That wouldn't surprise me.
I don't. Just wondering why would you hang out on forums of game you dislike. Unless you want the game to improve which is not your intention either since you are just burning your time here.
Just a curious question.
I won't be playing this game, so I have no invested interest in seeing it improve. I also have no reason to want to see it fail (which seems to be what you are implying). I didn't buy the game. I was in open beta and used a buddy key.
I have opinions about the game. This is a forum to express opinions. It's not really all that complicated.
I think that along your same line of questioning you should ask yourself two questions:
Why do you post about a game you like?
Why do you care if someone posts something that you don't like?
I am here because i actually want it to improve? i answer questions and help new players with their queries whenever i can? i am not here just to burn my time. I also post on FFXIV core on regular basis to see if someone need to clear some queries about the game and try to correct mis informed posts. So that is my reason for posting. satisfied?
And for the second question i hate to repeat myself. Scroll up and read again. When i dislike something i usually give me opinion once or twice and then move on. So i find it a little strange to hang up on something i dislike or have no interest in.
Obviously I have an interest in it. I played in beta and got a buddy key.

I would just like to point out that the underlined part isn't an assumption, it's an opinion...
I also started at UO and EQ1. I played FFXI for a long time too.
Personally, the game is strangely silent and I feel I won't make friends on there. It also lacks a distinct FF flavor the previous mmo had. In no way I will say the game is bad, but when I log on, I can't make myself stay overly long, I do a few leves, grind a bit then log off, no one to talk to.
I play mmo for the massively multiplayer online to make friends. In FFXIV I don't have the feeling I will make any.
I agree. You try to strike up a conversation or ask a question and you get no response. Nobody is talking. I guess everyone is in their own lil linkshells or whatever.
I did answer a guys question today because I knew the answer. I noticed that he was being ignored once again by the community, so I decided to speak up and help out. Especially since it was an easy question to answer. One that I am sure almost everyone around could have answered.
I was in a linkshell before I moved server, and they never talked. I know some on the bigger server and linkshells say their chat box is a wall of green text, but not everyone is that lucky and since no one talk, those that are trying to enjoy the game and don't get their questions answered end up leaving.
I read FFXIV fan forums, and talks of weeding out the idiots and all is that talk of a "wonderful community"?
What fan site is this? Yea, I imagine something is going on , this is one of the most unhelpful communities I have ever witnessed. Just feels kind of unwelcoming to be honest. Though, I don't have a problem looking something up myself, but I do like to help others if I can.
Keep it up helping others is a good thing.
i don't think community is un welcoming just that people are too busy crafting and looking for materials. game can be really confusing and thanls for no AH, everyone runs around all puzzled. So many times i have to ignore someone because its hard to talk while crafting. I messed up twice earlier and lost all my mat ;(
I think players are too focused as game demands lots of attention and searching all the time. Linkshells are where most of socialising is done.

Im guessing people that played beta and CE can really say if they don't like the game or not but i have yet to play it.
To be honest the audience for MMOs has changed i think for the worse, everywhere i see people only care about endgame content and gear i guess. I started playing UO: the second age and i was hooked to MMOs.
I only cared about exploring and finding new things in the world by myself i never was an awesome player, i didn't pvp but exploring and meeting people that were just excited to play their own pace was what i enjoyed.
so i ask, are the people saying this is a bad game are just the new school of MMO players who are just worried about stats and blowing through the leveling process the easiest way possible to have a capped char? or is this game really just bad?
I'd say it's time to read some legitimate things about the negative aspects of this game.
Look at post 35 of this thread. There are some very valid complaints and worries in that post.
Coming from the old school, this game is really nothing like those old games. There are key things that make it this way:
This game is linear. There is a story quest you can run through about every 10 levels.
Much of this games progression is based on daily quests. That alone takes so much away from it.
You can explore, but when you do, there is nothing to see. There are tiny caves, but nothing really in them. There are castles across water, but you cant reach them. Exploration is limited to either forest tunnels (literally, their version of forests are tunnels), or vast expanses of land with no landmarks. Exploration feels pointless in this game.
It's not just new players complaining. It's old ones too.
so i ask, are the people saying this is a bad game are just the new school of MMO players who are just worried about stats and blowing through the leveling process the easiest way possible to have a capped char? or is this game really just bad?
It's a simple-minded concept, "badness." I don't like sometihng, it's "bad." I like something, it's "good." Useless answers. Good/Bad in what way? All ways? No, obviously not, but seeing the difference is beyond the ken of a child or child-at-heart.
It's been my experience that the people who have a hardest time with Final Fantasy XIV fall into these categories:
They've played a lot more streamlined PC RPGs that sport a mouse-and-click interface, and are now too spoiled to go back to anything less optimized than that. JRPG menus scare them, they can't be bothered to learn them.
They've discovered this game requires you speak to several NPCs to find the one you're looking for to advance a story quest, freaked out, ran away, and never looked back.
They've played more forgiving balances, and find a game that threatens their character with death because they've yet to learn the strength of a particular kind of mob, or a game where failure is a possibility in crafting even if you're of a higher levle than the recipe, to be too hard for their liking. They prefer a game that simply gives them victory.
They've encountered some of the game's technical issues (most likely back in beta) such as much-higher-than-usual technical requirements (for an MMORPG), client/server latency in rudimentary interactions, or tendancy for the game to crash when you alt-tab out of full screen mode, not to mention the failing of guildleves if the client does crash or you are disconnected while performing them, and found these surmountable flaws to be game breakers.
They've heard about the Fatigue system and think it's much worse than it is, having never bothered to correct the initial misconceptions spread by Sangaku Complex.
And it all boils down to this in the end: the game simply wasn't made for them, they're the wrong kind of player to enjoy this game. Hopefully they discovered it early, but if they discovered it late (after they've dumped however-many-dollars into buying the box and/or game time and/or computer upgrades) then they come to these forums screaming their heads off because they've encountered a fundamental truth of life: that when you hold expectations contrary to what a thing is, you will suffer. Finding this truth unacceptable, they're hoping the developers will be good businessmen and accomodate their wrong-minded ideals so long as they're paying real money.w
I'll throw my 2 cents into this, i'm sure if i'm out of line somebody will let me know .
First off I consider myself to be a casual player with limited play time and i'm enjoying the game, my first impressions are:
Things I like:
Linkshells will mean something in this game, pugging is possible but ultimately it looks like having a solid base of people to play with will be extremely beneficial both for grouping and crafting, as a casual player this is important to me as when I do play I don't like wasting my time and I tend to avoid pugging as much as I can in general.
I think this is a game which is actually meant to be played through, what I mean by that is you have to branch your character and play it in different ways expanding on it with crafting and multiple classes. If you try to play in a linear way you will probably be in for a rough go of things.
While teleporting is an option the Anima system keeps it as an option so people will be traveling the world some people will call it a time sink but I feel its just a part of exploring the game. /shrug
I feel its more along the lines of a virtual world so everything takes time, crafting/gathering/leveling. There are things in the game which can be described as inconvienent.... I feel this isn't always a bad thing personally as I really want to feel i'm playing the game i'm paying 15 dollars a month for,but there again opinions differ.(yes I said inconvient... flame suit on)
The game is also not what I would consider hard, leve quests all have map indicators directing you where to go and tracks what you have to kill. (I feel they could actually increase the difficulty of these quests quite abit). Information while not visibly obvious is there but you have to read your journals etc.
Some of the NPC dialogue I find hilarious.
Things I dislike:
Not so different from whats been stated repeated on this site actually.
I feel the UI could be improved quite abit. I'm using mouse and keyboard right now and i'm not having a problem with the game itself its just the UI is click heavy while performing certain actions. Not honestly to hopeful that this will be fixed in the future as i'm not really sure its broken or working as intended but time will tell. (Click and Drag would be a huge boost also)
There is lag especially in heavily populated areas.
The economic system needs to be more functional. (this was addressed today on the lodestone site, changes within the next couple weeks.)
I think the crafting system should allow for some type of in game recipe recall rather than having people either write the recipes down or using an online source for information. (I play with a laptop sitting beside me so I don't feel it as much as others but I do truly sympathize with people on this issue and I think correcting it would improve the game considerably)
Is it a good game? I feel it is but I also feel it has a ton of potential to be way better than it is.
Is it a game for everyone? Definately not as i'm sure some people here can tell you.

I saw it on FFXIVCore and Eorzapedia.
I don't hate the game, it has a lot of potential, but if I can't make friends that makes me want to log on to see them, then it's not for me. If I made a tons of friends fast, probably would stay there. I dread paying 50$ tonight to move my WoW toons back to a EST server and hope to find friends there.
Alright I pulled that post so people don't have to browse to a different forum to view them and then post here

This is my list of annoyances:
Having to pay monthly for each character slot.
Game doesn't allow you to save gear/ability settings automatically for each class.
Can't move some base abilities from their default slot on the ability bar.
They greatly reduced gil rewards for main story line, making it almost impossible to start as a crafter and get anywhere.
Crash on alt+tab from full screen.
30 minute completion timer on leves and auto fail if crash, plus no way to retry.
Repair costs are way too high once you get past starter gear. Mat costs to fix yourself are usually more expensive than NPC repair.
The most interdepedant crafting system ever. Way too many obscure crafting mats, plus each crafting profession, in addition to needing components crafted by all the other crafting classes, needs mats from all the harvesting classes, plus combat drops.
Lack of AH. (See point 8. Neither is game killing alone, but combined they make the game one huge head ache).
Very little content, a lot of grind.
Very little variety across a zone, very few, uninspired points of interest. Cut and paste zone design. In short, horrible world design.
Once again, the very old and tired "kill rats, again, again and again until level 10" syndrome.
AI is very weak.
Targeting is like pulling teeth.
Clunky UI, everything takes too many steps and there is server lag on every single step.
You lose money if you try to focus on grinding. Vendoring all drops doesn't yield enough to cover repair costs on post level 10 gear. Lack of AH makes selling drops to PCs frustrating, slow and unreliable.
Anima regeneration too slow. Freedom of teleportation seems nice at first, but in the long run, you end up with far fewer teleport opportunities in a week than in games that have a 30 minute timer. There are no other methods of fast travel.
The game completely lacks in creativity. The elements that make Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy, are all missing, other than the renamed, recycled player races.
Difficulty of Combat Leves is very uneven. Some are super easy, others impossible.
No way to store recipes you learn in game. Need notes, a spread sheet and flow charts to be a successful crafter. Too much like work, too little like fun, for me.
Item management is poorly designed. No sorting, automatically or manually, one screen to equip, a different screen to unequip. (Took me a while to figure that one out, when I asked in game, people insisted there was no way to unequip an item with out equiping something else in the same slot), etc...
Some people will see some of these as neutral or even pluses. That's fine, every one is different. This is just a list of what annoys me and I have a feeling I'm not alone on a lot of them.
I also started at UO and EQ1. I played FFXI for a long time too.

From what I've observed and been told by fellow linkshell members a large majority of the player base is Japanese. One specific member said he attempted trading a few times and they asked "Do you speak Japanese?" and he said, no. They then ended the trade.
So maybe its the language barrier, not sure. I know I've shouted to recruit and got no answers even though 10-15 people have no linkshell icon over their head. I'm not going to rule on the vocalness of the game until after a week or so gone by. It would greatly help to have some sort of area chat though without a doubt.
The game isn't horrible, its just not streamlined to help the players get an economy started. We are forced to use methods that would not in any SOCIETY other than a hunter/gather society be successful. The whole selling/buying and equip items need to be streamlined with modern technology. A lot of stuff *if* it ever gets streamlined since it should of launched that way would go to great lengths to help the game out. As of know, it is more catered to the well organized linkshells that were prepared for this exact method. Can it work most certainly, would it work a lot faster with basic stuff in the game that is missing? You bet.
I mini-auction house in each city(with items only available in each city) with a hardcap of a low gil limit, then all the retainers later to take over for higher end goods, but the hardcap could go well into creating a solid economy for everyone to participate.
I don't consider it a bad game! Many will not like the fact that it's easier with a controller - What's finally ending it for me is the additional costs! I love alts and experiencing the game from different angles...but not at the cost of $3.00 per alt per month
Why would you want to have an alt? unless you need a mule. Everything can be done on one character.
Because sometimes you just want to get away from everyone you know and play in peace, or meet new friends, or re-do the early content with better gear/different builds (melee vs ranged, magic vs tanking etc) or just to keep a character in a particular area while the other is located elsewhere.
Not offering alts in silly, even EVE provides you 3 slots and its defintely a game where you don't 'need' more characters.
I have 3 accounts in EVE and a total of 7 characters that all get actively played in some capacity. (some more than others of course)

For those reasons maybe yes;) but i was talking from more gameplay side of viewpoint. Thats why i asked him a question as to why he would like to have an alt. i thought maybe he didn't know that all classe can be played on one character making alts pretty useless.

Another complaint you might want to take under consideration is community. MMO communities back in the day had a pretty solid attitude overall. You could start by reading a lot of the posts of the people that are liking this game in these forums.
Of course this site probably isn't the best place to get a feel, but there are other sites like FFXIV core that you could check out to get a feel.

RIGHT on target. There is just something "missing" from the game to make me WANT to log in. There is no "addictive" factor that FFXI had, no long term goals I can really see myself striving for other than level maxxing, but that's a given in this genre anyway. I think alot has to do with how annoying selling anything is and the complete lack of side quests, possibly other issues as well that maybe aren't so glaringly obvious.
Funny enough, for months before this came out everyone was griping about the speed of combat. Now that it is live, the combat is the best part of the game. It's the rest that doesn't seem polished, done, etc.

That's a good point you make about the combat. Let's hope they fix up the 'quality of life' issues soon as well. Most of the issues are not gamebreaking on their own, but they are just plain annoying. It's a turn off. Like why can't I sort my inventory. Sure it's not a game breaker, that would be just silly, but it adds to the annoyance meter. There are just so many features like this that don't really have any direct impact on the gameplay and progression, but the number of things and the frequency at which you encounter them makes for one miserable gaming experience...often enough.

If you spent any amount of time playing FFXI you would know this is the "JP ONRY!" problem. I've seen JP players outright refuse to group with NA players even if both players share the same goals. I've asked JP folks to craft things for me and they literally say, "JP only." I don't get it. Is it because I don't speak the launguage, or are you really just a racist? Of course, there were some nice JPs, but a larger majority of them were very rude towards NA players.
Everybody goes on about how the XI community is/was so great, but it's the harshest MMO community I've ever been a part of. Gear not that great? Tough shit, no XP for you. Wearing the wrong ring to WS in? Get ridiculed by the elitests. I've seen some poor newbie with an underleveled/weird subjob get thrown out of a group before the first pull. Don't even think about asking for help with some of the harder missions. It is the unfriendliest most elitist-filled community I've ever played in. I imagine a good portion of that community is making the switch to XIV.

Yup, I remember I was leveling my Thief for a subjob and got kicked out of a party because I had bad gear, even after we had pulled a few times and my damage was fine.
I came back on my 75 full AF2 and geared out Samurai and killed everything until they had to disband.
So you forgot vengeful as well.
In all seriousness though, FFXI was not an easy game. A party was only as good as the weakest member. If you were slow on kills or died now and then you wasted hours of six peoples time. There were reasons for the 'eliteness' sometimes. Im not trying to defend it but that was the reasoning.
In FFXIV recently though I was fishing and the guy fishing next to me started talking to me. Im american but my character has a french last name, he was french and had a japanese character name. We had a good laugh and it was a nice chat.
Like any community, your going to run into the good and bad eggs. My linkshell members have all helped me out and all of us have met someone who was willing to sell us an item we needed for really cheap just to be nice.

Alright I pulled that post so people don't have to browse to a different forum to view them and then post here
From what I've observed and been told by fellow linkshell members a large majority of the player base is Japanese.
