There is no way in hell I would do it. First off this would never happen, but if something like this would happen? I am not that much of a nerd that I would rather people die so that I can play my online games. That just seems rather silly , selfish , and childish if you ask me.
I have to say though... this ISP in question sounds about as evil as my current one.
Not to get all FB on ya, but I sometimes wish posts had a "like" button. I'd push that button. Not just for the quoted post, but a lot. Many people on this site make me laugh.
Valuing your own life over that of others is fine (maybe). The only thing preventing you from ending the life of another person is the fear that it may result in the end of your own, is pretty fkin sad.
Nothing to do with fear at all. Only to do with the likely manipulation being played upon you and the outcome of it. You will note I never actually said I cared or did not care that someone was going to die, you put those words in my mouth for me.
I didn't put those words in your mouth, I didn't even type the word care. It's a moral 'choice' and a balance of the value upon which you put to certain things. The reply to your post was based on the implication you made that it wasn't the act of killing a stranger which was necassarily the deterent but the possibility that it could end in your own death. Even needing to make that point, beyond the death of a stanger at your own hands, should surely then make any other consideration irrelevant.
Perhaps so or perhaps I just see it as a scheme meant to show you that pushing the button to kill someone else is as good as pushing the button to kill yourself. Thus the entire point of it is to show people that other people do matter and should not be killed due to greed or gaining something for themselves. Because in the end that may just come back to haunt them when their disregard for the lives of other people in turn ends with others disregarding theirs too.
No, but if a random troll would die if I played another MMO. I'd download mmorpg.com's entire list and hope the joker with the box meant someone would die every time I played another MMO.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

LOL thats what I was just thinking . .. and a lot of people who did not watch 'the box'

Scenarios like this always assume people will stand there listening to some monologue about the 'game' they are about to play. No.
Some strange man even starts to propose anything other than installing what has previously been agreed upon is thrown out. I don't listen to door to door salesman, street con artists, or internet scams. Some jibber jabber about 'the button' and you end up head down on my porch. Threaten me with death from some hidden death squad if I don't comply and I subdue you until my brothers can come over and we decide where to start....okay I am getting carried away. hehe
Now, of course this doesn't translate well to a storyline as in so many movies where someone runs up and yells "The aliens are attacking! We need to get down to the stadium!" your reply is "Let me get my coat and rifle!" obviously.
I'm reminded of the lengthy scene in Shaun of the Dead where the zombie apocalypse is happening all around him as he casually walks his normal route to the local convenience store.
The suspension of disbelief required for many of these constructs is mind boggling even to set up a moral fable. Might as well be a game of 'would you rather'.
In other words, it is easy to ask someone to pull a virtual trigger and get many saying 'yes' but when the gun is sighted most will refuse to pull...unless appropriately threatened.
This question is based on the short story "The box".
Your internet breaks down one day. You call up your internet company to come fix it. A strange man appears at your door within the hour and claims to be the repair guy. He replaces your modem with an odd looking box with a large button on top. He tells you that your internet is fixed but in order to play another MMO again you would have to push the button on top. He warns that if you do..someone that you don't know will die in real life.
I voted yes but not because I'm evil but because I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday, that can't happen and if they did die I'd send them after his creepy old ass.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
A person dies in this world what every 2-3 seconds? by pushing a button 1 person will die once, to be very blunt it wouldn't really effect me very much. A couple people died while I was typing this.
I'd press it, then press it again, and again and again.... iirc I got 90 clicks in 10 seconds on some stupid facebook game so could go through reasonably fast.
If it was just a 1 click thing I wouldn't. but instant easy untraceable killing? let the culling begin.

So if you push 2 buttons a person will die twice?
-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.- -And on the 8th day, man created God.-
Think of it this way: everyone wants an internet connection, right?
So if everyone pushed the button... ultimately the human race comes to an end. Period.
So I just can't push it, if only to prove that some of us won't. There would be a chance that few of us survive such an apocalypse. Then we'd go building working-as-intended internet connections!

tbh after that initial death it loses a lot of it's je ne sais qui.

keep pushing the button = eternal life? (he keeps staying in the dying state which is per se alive)

I voted "No". If it would spare someone's life, I could walk away from MMOs. I have other hobbies anyway. Easy come, easy go.

"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"
Beat the guy to death with the box.
Sell box.
Call out for another modem.
Profit.

And some of them do it intentionally.

Anyone remembers the original in the Twillight Zone from back in the 80's?
I hear there's a gremlin on the side of your plane.

can I push it more than once?
I pushed the button 14 times.

I would throw it at the dude so the button is pressed on impact, then tell him "how's it feel to be a murderer?".

Lol. I like that move.
Good move
Though if we want to get analytical about intent..
I voted no, partially BECAUSE of the movie/story that your question is based on.. LOL
You know....karma can be a bitch, and I'm not willing to risk ALL THAT to play another MMO.

Some guy just gave me a button that I can use to save the world? I'll need some time to think about this.
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.
