Well, what do they mean by free? They said that items in their shop won't effect normal gameplay, didn't they?
i assume that they said that as the slots will be free...you dont have to get them in the store
if they said all weapons/armor will have one free upgrade. then i would be worried

Yeah, but don't underestimate the power of people twisting words. So far arena net has been good with being straight up, but seriouly, all these other mmo's i've played over the years have made me second.. and even third.. guess what the company is actually saying to the player lol. Maybe they just mean 1 free upgrade, the rest is payed for IN GAME gold? I hope that's the case.

I'm going with free meaning that each item has one slot that's free to slot as you please, once it's got something in it it's no longer free, it's used.
Hope Gw 2 is so good that would feel like a dream.
I was always dreaming of the absolute mmo that would satisfy me 90%.
Lets see if that dream will come true.

Could be just the 1 and rest gold either way not a game breaker for me personally.
In GW the only way you can retain the same look from lvl 1 to lvl 20 is to purchase a costume from the game store or ncsoft store. All GW players know this and hence why I don't understand their complaining...
It has never been possible to get pre-searing or any other starter armor and give it max armor values. You could always give them new runes (Crests in GW2 are equivalent to runes in GW) to improve them but they were still a death sentence in high level areas unless you were a 55, 105, 330 or 600 builds. But they are specialised tank or solo farm builds anyway and those armor sets were useless outside of their pre-designed purpose.
If you want to remain the same cosmetically then yes I agree its a fluff or pay item. It doesn't affect gameplay or bestow any advantage its just bling.
As for the free slot in the armor I think they mean free as in 'empty' so you can just slot something in. In other words the armor comes 'clean' or 'neat' or however you have heard it ingame. Buying slots is against what they have already said about game store items giving an advantage over other players.
I think because the game has delivered so much under the buy to play model they have announced their first game store item the bubble has burst. The game and content are free. Fluff is not and neither are services like character slots and storage etc.
Sounds like people want to have their cake and eat it and then eat everyone elses cake too!
This won't be the 1st game store item either. There will be more and I will be checking them out too!

You dream of something that cannot satisfy you completely?
You are disappointed even in your imagination?

Well, you dream to have a job, wife and kids? Than you're dreaming for something that doesn't satisfy you completely, and you know it. Having a job means working all the time and, most of the times, have a lousy payment or other problems. Having wife means beeing faithful to her no matter what happens and get a hold of all the discussions you have. Having kids, well, that's really troublesome. But it's your dream, because there are so great moments with it that you feel it's worth it.
He's dreaming of an mmorpg that satisfies him knowing that it will be a flawed, but still a dream.

I do not dream about that, actually. I have a job, and a boyfriend (thankfully no children), but I do not dream about that. I have that. That is the real world. When I daydream the things I have are much better than the real world.
Of course, that logic does not work for a game. When we play a game, we do not want to have the same things that annoy us in the real world. A good game makes it feel like a real world, but does not force us to do the tedious or annoying things in the real world. That is kind of the whole point, I think. I play games that do not satisfy me completely, but that is not my dream game. I date men that do not satisfy me completely, but they are not my dream lover.

RMT is the epitome of a degraded community, in my opinion. Have fun in your item mall.
Yeah, glad Anet doesn't have an item mall. I can't stand them myself. Selling services and fluff items like normal pay to play MMO's is fine with me especially since in this case there's no monthly fee.
UO - Name changes, Lady bug lamps, extra storage etc.
WoW - Name changes, vanity pets and etc.
FFXI - Name changes, server transfers and etc.
Glad to see Anet staying away from the item mall approach and are sticking to the fluff and services that pay to play's generally use.
Name changes, fluff items, gender changes, extra storage, extra char slots, etc. etc. etc. are a part of pretty much every pay to play MMO and have been since they've been around. Don't confuse fluff and services with an actual item mall
But in the end if you think that what Anet is doing is more than you can bare, my advice is to leave the MMO genre all together because Anet is actually on the lighter side than most Pay to Plays
I mean seriously $25 for a celestial mount in WoW lol!
Hard to disagree with you. I know it's becoming the norm, or has been for a long time. I just can't help but feel even fluff items offered for real money are basically saying that item acquisition and social status in general, mean nothing. I'm not in favor of excluding players from content, and there are plenty of MMOs that have mechanics that do so. However when the divisive factor depends on how much cash you can (or are willing to) spend on the game, it totally defeats the purpose, in my opinion. I have not really been part of the MMO gaming genre for several years now, but I still feel that I am a part of the community. At least there is no RMT on this site yet, hehe. Is there?
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
This site has ads they pay for the running of it. What do you mean defeats the purpose. The purpose is to make money they are not running a charity. What did you expect running servers cost money so yes they have to make it somehow.
I liked the info, but I fear the transmute stones will be going into the direction of certain other F2P titles, where you have to buy them 'in bulk' for stupid prices.
I hope that they will be cheaper and also obtainable ingame as rare drops (think dyes at 5 times less drop chance in GW1 for example). People would still buy them because they are impatient (see skill unlock packs) but other people can collect them over time to do a set change every once in a while.
Anyway, I hope there won't be too much itemshop stuff, I much rather pay for a content expansion every 6 months than have an itemshop where they sell loads of stuff (hell I'd rather have a subscription model than an itemshop).

I meant defeats the purpose of playing the game. Defeats the purpose of acquiring items or using items as social status. If you can just buy that stuff, then it has no intrinsic value, in my opinion. But yes you are right, people love to spend money, and the game companies need it to run the servers.

So, resource nodes are in the game for the crafting. First thing I heard about it so far.
thanks, Ave, interesting reading.
Yeah, I wonder how it will pan out with the nodes.
