In the latest update to the Arena.Net Guild Wars 2 blog, Rewards & Item System designer John Hargrove has a detailed look at what drives many to play the games they do: LEWT. In the post, Hargrove outlines the main principles that the team used when considering the reward system: Rewards for all; worthwhile rewards; a player's look; customization; and upgrading gear in a meaningful way.
In the case of distributing general monster loot or opening dungeon end-chests, this principle means that each player gets their own roll, so it’s alright if you are soloing and someone begins fighting alongside you. This won’t cause the loot you would receive to degrade in any way, as long as you actively participate in that combat. Likewise, when you get to the end of that big dungeon with your group, you each get to individually open the chest and receive your own personal reward.
In the case of gathering materials from things like ore nodes, plants, and the like, this means that when you gather from that resource you use it up for yourself, but not for others. In Guild Wars 2 there is no need to race to beat other people to the same resource node. Take your time ripping that bear’s head off, because no one can walk up and steal that copper node in the back of its cave from you. You may be helping others in your world reach that copper safely, but rest assured that you’re not just clearing a path for a node ganker.

I'm torn on the instanced node thing. In UO I loved that when someone depleted a spot it was depleted for all..... but in UO there were so many mining spots it didn't matter. You walked up to a mountain or inside a cave and that whole thing was a mining spot lol.
In other games I've hated the non instanced nodes because then it's basically a race, you win some you lose some but in the end whether you won or lost you still spend a ton of time running around checking empty nodes in a area before you find fresh ones.
It is good so long as nodes are scarce enough.
"With the transmutation system, you’ll be able to acquire new items known as Transmutation Stones through our in-game store that allow you to customize your appearance."
First mention of the cash shop? Or did I get it wrong? Still, it's a cosmetic feature so it's nothing too bad.
Making gathering easier is not something I liked, fighting for any resource is always fun.
The rest looks pretty good... looks like GW2 will have lots of customization
They will likely stick with the GW style of shop which doesn't have anything on it that you can't play without. Mainly fluff and convenience items and the standard services such as name changes and etc.
Not very fun when every node is camped by RMT 24/7.
Yeah that tends to be the issue. They find a means of forcing players to buy from them basically when resource nodes are in short supply by perma camping them with bots and then jacking up the prices on AH or w/e else they decide to sale those resources. Which of course allows them to amass a great deal of gold or w/e the in game currency for that particular game is, which then in turns allows them to sale in game currency lol.
I'm not too worried about the stone until I see the pricing option. At the moment, I'm thinking the cost is similar to a costume which amounts to $7 for the whole set. I'm hoping they consider 6 pieces in an armor and price it accordingly.
Anet was out in full force last night expecting this mixed reaction. We will be getting more details this week, I think they said that. I'll just have to remember very few MMO gives this fluff feature but then again we had something like this in GW1.
Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished
i can see my money going into storage space and transmutation stones =x
now: GW2 (11 80s).
Dark Souls 2.
future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
"Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
I was really hoping that they would implement an appearance slot system rather than this 'transmutation' system. It's so much better from a player's stand-point. Now they got us by the balls whenever we want to look different :
"Oh, you change your helmet's appearance, awesome. Oh? You want it to look like something else? Another transmutation stone is needed. (Several transformations later.) Ah, I see you want the appearance of your old armor again. Well, time to go acquire that set of armor from the dungeon of way-back-when, since it got consumed in an earlier transmutation. "
Yes, an appearance system is better than no system, but if this is how it's going to work, I'll be a sad panda. You won't be able to collect sets of armor very easily.
in GW1 i have newer feelt forced or seduced to use the ingame store.
but this article did just create that feeling.
I know that its purely cosmetical to change armour appereance, but lets face it, when described and showed like this, it creates an exspectation in me that says, "i have to do this." and when then reading i have to pay for it. I feel dissappointed.
And its not that I am saying that its not fair, I find the ingame store with cosmetical offers perfactly fair. I just don't like to face the fact that i properly will not be able to resist its offers anymore.
I'd like to hear more about this, as well. Cash Shop or merchant-based? I can live with either, and since GW2 is sub-free I am likely to give broad latitude concerning Cash Shops, but I'd like to know the details.
There will definitely be a Cash Shop. There's been one in GW1 for quite some time now. There's never been anything game-breaking in there though. As long as the same trend continues into GW2 and it keeps me from paying a sub I'm fine with that.

Im not a fan of nodehunting in most games. Especially at prime time on a busy server this is nothing but a serious waste of time and has nothing to do with playing a game anymore.
The only games where I could stand nodehunting were games that had a lot of them (Vanguard if you were willing to explore, EQ2 also has a lot of nodes).
So Im really glad that the devs are taking measures to prevent nodeganking and cherrypickers so that nodehunting gets more worthwile.
@Talthanys, check the linked article about dyes. The dye system already lets you customize your armour in many ways. And you dont have to buy from the online store for that.
Imo transmutation stones are perfectly fine for cash shop.
Aion has same option (for free), but it's not like I'm remodeling my gear every day and if the overall quality of design will be good, most ppl will not even feel the need to do it.
Hey someforumguy.
Yes, I read the Dye blog when it came out a few days ago, and I am very happy about the direction and emphasis on customization that Anet is taking. But dyes and outfit appearance are two different things underneath the same umbrella of Customization.
If Transmutation stones are in a cash shop, that won't bother me too much, though my preference is to have them attainable in game, whether that means an alchemist type merchant or as a drop (or both).
What it will do is maybe force people to wait until they have a sizeable collection of items and then pick and choose items for Transmutation. Otherwise you might pay for a Stone and Transmute, then the next day score a great piece of armor that you want, and then buy again.
Like I said, not a huge deal (unless Stones are like $10/per), but personally I will by with the dye system initially and then grab Stones at end game.
Good stuff. Although I am sick of reading about it. I just wanna play it -_-
I honsestly like the approach they are taking with all of these. The one that I could say I don't like that much is the Tranny stone. But it might prove potential to be something good and different. Nice job Anet!
good stuff
No one knows yet how transmutation stones will be offered through the store. Pricing is still up for discussion. It could be you need to find a stone in-world, but would need to purchase recharges for it through the store. Or maybe the reverse - you purchase the base stone, then hunt the world for recharges. Or you could have to purchase each individually, with each having multiple charges. There are many directions they can take it.
However, one thing I know for certain is that ANet will be giving it a great deal of consideration before making a final decision. Judging from the outcry, which has largely been the most negative I have seen yet for a design decision in GW2, they won't make the decision lightly.
Either way, I'm glad the option is available. I intend to use it whether I have to go through the item shop or scour every dungeon in Tyria for those stones.
*face palm*
Anything cosmetic in a cash shop shouldn't even be debated. Its good way for them to make money and a good way for those of us who care to look good. Just like in the real world, you can pay 400 dollars for useless shoes, or you can pay 4 dollars for a sweater that will keep you warm.
How are people finding it nessesary to complain about cash shops with purely cosmetic items. Come on people, stop and think.
Whatever they decide to do, I just hope they don't make you lose the item that you chose to have the transmutated gear appear as. I don't want to have to go back several times to a dungeon just because I want the gear I just lost.
best read !!
So What Now?
Yes. This smells like first mention of cash shop
Well we should have expected it should rear its ugly head sooner or later. The things started to sound little bit too perfect
Alas. Cosmetic changes. I guess its a reasonable thing to be in cash shop. Lets hope it is the only one.
