Advanced Classes: Friday update Dev Blog

From the official SWTOR Website and dev blog:

Snippet:

We recently announced the Advanced Classes system in Star Wars™: The Old Republic™, and I’d like to take the time to fill you in on what the team has been up to, provide some details about the game mechanics surrounding Advanced Classes, and answer some of the questions that the community has voiced on our forums (yes, we do read those... daily).

Why Advanced Classes?

As you know, a core feature of Star Wars: The Old Republic is that we are shipping the game with eight classes – each with an epic story, full voiceover, quests and cinematics. This creates a very unique game experience for each of them, something never done in an MMO before.

Furthermore, we wanted to ensure that we had the flexibility to support several play-styles within each of these eight classes. So we built Advanced Classes into the game from the ground up to provide us with the ability to create and support different gameplay and roles inside each class.

I like the way they are implementing this, though I wish there were non humanlike races we could play other then using the companions. Regardless, it appears at least on the surface that the differences between the advanced classes are more drastic and provide a much more unique experience (especially story line) as compared to the WOW talent trees within each class. Though I always tend to play the goody goody ( I can't help it, I'm a good person lol), this is the first game I am thinking about the dark side equally. Especially when I learn more about the Sith Inquisitor.

The term 'stealth healer' in the article raised some question marks with me.

Is this something that has been elaborated upon in other articles or Q&A's?

Just curious how I should picture it.

Interesting read. I'm largely indifferent to SW:ToR but this was good. I liked the shared 'Luck' path.

    Think Enema Assassin.

Heals from cover is my best guess as how that will work. Which could cause some serious use of strategy in PVP if that's the case. It's one thing to make it through a wall of tanks to take out healers, it's quite another when there is an added bonus of a cover system on top of it. I might have to go this route with my smuggler.

    Ah, that makes more sense.

I was already imagining a smuggler, moving silently and unseen to a team member and then hitting him with a health boost from behind image

I cant speak for everyone, but I know I would rather have someone sneak up and heal me, rather than give a 'How da ya do" when you are not looking. I dont favor my character walking bow-legged ala Rob Lowe in Wayne's World. image

As far as skill trees....I hope they can keep this stuff balanced. It sucks when the opposite faction has the "cool" powers/abilities.

I wish they had announced the complete set of Advanced Classes. On the other hand...

    "And finally….

"Star Wars: The Old Republic is a game in development and in active testing. Any feature, ability or even class name mentioned above (or anywhere else on the website) is subject to review and testing, and may change between now and the game's launch. "

I'm betting that this means they understand that 'Jedi Wizard' is going to change.
