I found this game, and it looks like it might be great and exactly what I've been looking for. Only super apparent problem so far is that the game seems dead. So my question is, just how low is the population? Too low to even bother?
EDIT: In response to the first reply, just fyi in general, I wouldn't recommend the game to most people. I just happened to be looking for this type of game.

No Idea but im downloading it now.
i havent heard about that game maybe because its dead, a game with low numbers of people are boring games so no point on staying if that so.
This game seems to be exactly what I'm looking for, but it does look pretty dead. Do you want to maybe make a guild or something, so even if the game is dead we still have someone to play with?
Yes I have a dream And its not some MLK dream for equality. I wanna own a decommissioned lighthouse And I wanna live at the top And nobody knows I live there. And theres a button that I can press, and launch that lighthouse into space.
Dransik? You mean Ashen Empires or Dransik Classic? Dransik Classic is good, if you can stomach the horrible, even for the time it was created, graphics. They are beyond bad and just nauseating (literally, I've felt physically ill after a couple hours playing), but the game is good.
Dransik, the one that became Ashen Empires, was one of my first MMOs. In the beginning, it was very UO like and it was a great game with a small but dedicated community. Then, when it was sold out to TKO the game went to complete crap. (which I think Lothgar's crew bought it back from?). But, this was about 8 or 9 years ago when all this happened. I went back around 2005ish and the server was very populated, but the game was complete crap. It had went from being a spectacular sandbox where you leveled any way you liked, to a complete hack'n'slash grindfest for gear and levels.
I wouldn't play if I was you. If you're interested in those kinds of games though, I think Lothgar's Crew (sorry I don't know the name of the company) may have 1 or 2 other games besides Dransik/Ashen Empires. They are very talented and know what it takes to make a good game.
TLDR:
What game are you talking about? Dransik Classic or Dransik/Ashen Empires?
This is Dransik Classic:
It's a very very good game, but I suspect it's pretty dead because it's been around for a long long time. The graphics though, are just terrible. You see how hard it is to see the characters on the background, the entire game is like that. Now, imagine what it's like seeing that for hours on end.

this game looks very interesting
I've played Dransik when it was in beta. It reminded me alot of UO.
Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished
Dransik (which is now Ashen Empires) was awesome back in the day. However it's at the point now that no new players really come in, and everyone who does play is max level with unbelievable masses of loot stashed away.
Before or after Mainland was put in? I played mostly before, I think I stuck around about 4 months after it was put in though.

I was indeed referring to the original Dransik, not Ashen Empires. I checked out Ashen Empires too after finding Dransik, but both games seem to be completely dead, or as someone else said, everyone is max level with no influx of new players.
I'd love to start a guild, but I don't play enough to make it worth anyone else's time to depend on having me to play with.
But back to the main point, I'd love for a game like this to have a great and active community, with a strong emphasis and reason to group up to dungeon crawl and explore huge worlds. Lots of content + lots of reasons to explore that content in groups + people to actually play with + an engine like this would be a helluvalotta fun.
I only played in the mainland. There was only one large landmass that I remembered.
Playing now: Cities: Skyline / Ori and the Blind Forest / Banished
Yeah, that was before Mainland was put in. It was a portal to get over there.
We played together then. Back then, there were only like 120 people logged on at once. I started less than a week after beta opened. I only remember 2 characters though. "Lysergic" and "Frost".
The game is made by the people who made the first Ultimas though. (Not UO)

I googled the name Lothgar and found some interesting stuff, including a new 2d mmo game by him. Links below:

EDIT: I'm trying the Elderlands beta right now. Anyone should be able to get in, but if it doesn't let you it's probably because the server is down. If the game is worth playing imo then I'll make a post about it.
Yup, that's what I was thinking of. I tried that a few years ago, but I didn't play long.
