If WoW died tomorrow... (Yes, i'm very aware that this isn't going to happen)

What would be the effect on the mmo industry, both good and bad?

The MMO gaming world would survive as if they never existed. Not sure why Blizzovision is the center of some people's universe. They are just another company providing a gaming service. They aren't irreplaceable.

    Archlinux ftw

My guess would be they would either move to LOTRO or EQ2 or some other game. Good for the profit margins of other games, perhaps not so good for the community of the games. Is there a point to this question?

Absolutely, and a lot of people would like to see them replaced.  I would just like to hear more well-thought arguments on exactly why they want this, what they would hope to get from it.

People often talk about a "wow" killer, and i'd like to see a more intelligent discussion about exactly why they want wow to die, and what they hope would come of it.

Well, that's easy. Some People think that if wow was to cease to exist then other games with different requirements, different rules, different purpose would then flourish. Then again, some people hold an irrational hatred for wow, thinking that if there was a wow killer then somehow they would be vindicated.

But that won't happen. WoW was inevitable.

If wow stopped "being" then a new WoW would take its place.

Look, if I were to eliminate rock/pop music would people suddenly start flocking to jazz or 12 tone or *insert other style of  music here*?

No of course not. People would create music that reflected their times and their needs.

No, but if you had eliminated Madonna, Cindy Lauper would be a huge star right now instead of a sad hasbean :)

You know, I wonder what MMORPG the players would migrate to if WoW did shut down.

A lot more people would get to use the southpark joke about "THE END OF THE WORLD!..of warcraft". not much more would change after that.

The best thing  to happen would be:

    1. immature, easy mod, Chuck Norris jokes non MMORPG community gone forever

    2. other companies realising that 200 - 500k ARE a success too

    3. we would see a resurrection of our genre. End of MMOS comeback of MMORPGs

    Worst thing:

    1. immature, easy mod, Chuck Norris jokes joining other games -> destroying everything

    2. Ghostcrawler finding a job at Nc, Anet and destroying those games

    3. dead WoW -> Blizzards new supereasiest MMO releases..

Perfect scenario would have been that this game had been never ever been made or made but with less of a success. Despite the fact that I've met some really nice people there (which all have stopped playing long ago btw.) this game has destroyed our once beloved genre + community and harmed the whole MMORPG genre for years to (still) come.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

Do you think the majority would migrate to the same mmo?

Don't think it would have much of an effect apart from giving us all hella youtube videos of lemmings offing themselves and making the planet a better place for the rest of us.

Other mmos would suck just as much as they do now and most people would not find them deserving of a subscription fee... as they do now.

Yep. WoW brought in millions of NEW people to MMOs. I would think they would try a few other games, discover that they are not as fun as WoW was for them and then leave MMOs behind and return to what they did before they played WoW, such as console/PC games, TV, reading or maybe even go outside.

Like a couple said above, I'm pretty confident that if WoW stopped  - a huge amount of them would return to what they did prior. I know too many people that have no interest in gaming outside of WoW. From my experience and this is not to say as a fact, a lot of people play WoW strictly as a social network. They would rank WoW and Farmville as the same :P

I'm on the boat that would like to see this actually happen. Only in the hopes that some of the talent would go to making the "next-gen" mmo arrive before I'm dead. Not that I know what would make something a great next-gen mmo.

I never really got the "next-gen" label. Does it mean HD widescreen or is it to do with internet downloads etc? Or is it just a marketing gimmick?

more or less a marketing gimmick. for me it means the next step in the evolution of gaming. kind of like how mmo's went from MUDs to Meridian 59 or Ultima Online to "real 3d" of EverQuest. For me, the mmo industry went stale after this. Nothing really innovative other than streamlining the gameplay and keeping the graphics to current hardware. I'll be the first to admit that I have no clue as to what the next step would be. I'm not a fan of the whole virtual reality headgear immersion thing, so I don't know how or what could change the face of mmo's.
