If a new game is crashing for you, and it's not crashing for everybody else, what you have is technical problems with your system that require you do some rigorous troubleshooting. No, it doesn't particularly matter how new your system is - on the contrary, really new systems can also have really new (and buggy) drivers.
If you're unable to solve it on your own, your best bet is to try to contact the tech support of the company that made the game and see if they have some solutions. They're going to run you through a lot of things you've already done because they're not perfect, make mistakes, and are probably outsourced from India like almost everybody else's tech support.
You can ask the community for help, but you don't want to frame it along the lines of, "this game sucks, you all suck for liking this game" unless you're hoping to get flamed. At the very least, you might want to tell them some better details, lest they become more sympthetic with the tech support you're apparently having trouble communicating with.
Failing that, yes, you should return the game. Compatibility problems happen. It sucks, but such is life.
you can actually file a charge back through your bank for a quality issue. As for a software purchase, if you can prove that you've contatced the company and requested a refund based on the context that you didn't recieve the product/the product didn't work as described. You have the right to a chargeback if they won't refund it. But you need to have a record of an attempt to return the product in its entirety, without keeping anything. You also need to have proof that you as a consumer have met every requirement laid out for this product to work, and that the reason for you returning it isn't of your own fault but of something that effects the quality of the product. Due to such an error...malfunction...etc on the companies part, you have recieve an item of lesser quality or you recieved something of lesser "value" (as defined by the IRS).
If you can do the above you are completely entitled to a chargeback. Now whether your bank actually does this is different story, most banks will do it with no questions on credit cards. Always use a credit card because funds can be reversed on credit. Credit cards are backed up by much stricter rules then debit/cash transactions.
I deal in construction law practices daily so I do have an extensive knowledge of credit reversal transactions and what is legal/not legal.
First bolded red, did you contact the retailer where you purchased ffxiv? This lays squarely with the retailer as it is they who provided you the product. By purchasing at their store, you are aware, as it is evident on your receipt and posted most likely in the store, that you are purchasing that product, you are agreeing to their terms and conditions of the sale, its not the retailers fault you did not pay attention to the specs ect.
Second bolded point. SE clearly states the minimum system requirements on the box, giving full notice that this software requires those specifications to run and to be usable. If the person can prove that their system can run the game and they have tried every avenue to remedy the issue, they are entitled to a refund. But the reason why this will cause him an issue is, the consumer MUST MUST MUST provide full documentation and proof that, if a one time key is used, in this case as a MMORPG, that the consumer has requested that the account be disabled and unable to be activated ever again. Then and only then would it be ok to get a refund, otherwise its still fraud.
But since he not stated his specs or come back asking for help, i can already tell you he would be in a heap of sh!t if he did this.
In response, I was just trying to correct the issue that someone said it is illegal to chargeback software. The only illegal part is if u chargeback and somehow keep anything of value. you have to return, or in this case prove that you attempted to return everything inorder for the charge back to be legal.
I agree though it can be a shady area with stuff like software or anything that isn't a physical good. but this isn't the first nor will it be the last. People expect games MMOs to be released 100%, no bugs, nothing. but the problem is that its just to damn expensive to do that. Now increase the up front fee to say 100 bucks per account, and you might have a little more income to prevent relase errors and such......all comes down to financials.
