f2p is the best deno ever created. the free 2 weeks or whatever the p2p normally have,is just ot short and they cut out so much you really can't decide if you like the game. you can play as much as you want and IF you like it then buy what you want.will more of the p2p do this?maybe as the players leave in droves.
Whatever, cool. Hopefully this means they update the game once every year, and not just with one new map or a rehashed classic instance/raid. They've really been slacking off on new art assets since Moria. I have no idea how people toughed it out for two years with basically zero new content. What a joke.
I have been playing the game for about 2 years now. I must say this is by far the best mmo I have played and I played a lot. I never saw a decline in numbers, always a lot of people running around, chating, doing quests. People are looking for others to do raids, etc. The game was not dieing, trust me on that.
By going free to play, they will dominate that part of the market as this is an AAA title. I think things will get better for the game and I'm really glad for it.
Now only if Codemasters would speed things up, but then again, it does have its advantages. We won't have to put up with the frustration of bugs and hiccups in the conversion.
Anyways, if you like the game, keep playing and have fun. If you don't, just move on.
There was a decline but that was before you started. But I am not sure that it will rule the market because they are charging for a lot of more things than the other good F2P game is, Runes of magic... Compare the shops of both games and you'll see that LOTRO (and EQ2X) charges for a lot more stuff including quests and I am not sure how the F2P players will like that.
Maybe it will rule the market, maybe they would make more money to continue as F2P, it is still hard to say. But I am surprised they didn't make even more money the first month, I thought they would.
It is anyways too early to say if Turbines decision to change from P2P to F2P was a wise one, it is always risky to make a change like that to a released game. We will know next summer.
There is no such thing as F2P. There is only a choice between monthly sub and micro transaction consume at your own pace. I have not yet seen a "F2P" game worth playing that did not require you to spend some money in the store to make the game playable. This is not a bad thing overall as the devs do have to make a living, however, its just the misnomer of F2P thats gets repeated so often.
I personally like Eve's model the best. Players can buy time cards which they can sell in game for in game cash. Players who dont want to spend RL money on the game can just use in game cash to keep an account active. Players who dont want or have a lot of time to get in game cash to play the game can use RL cash to buy time cards to boost their in game cash saving a lot of in game time. Best of both worlds in my opinion and no need for special game store items.
I'm glad it seems to be working out for them. LOTRO is a great game and it was a shame to see the number of players as low as it was. It's nice that, when I log in now, there's people around.
Wasn't every really low they were around 300k+ subs before going to its f2p system.

Well, that's great for you.
I personally have played free to play games without spending a dime. I didn't need to spend any money to make the game playable. Archlord and Shaiya.
It seems very possible to also play LOTRO without buying anything. A pain in the neck in a few instances but I think a person with patience could do it.
I would agree of course that these games are there for people without patience or who want to add an amenity here and there. But if a player knows what he/she is about, has a bit of patience and is willing to work through the landscape of the game on their own terms then there is a good chance that they don't have to pay a dime.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
And those % won't save Lotro, nor did it any good for DDO (game sank again in Xfire ranks after 6 months).
X-Fire? LMAO! I hate to break it to you, but for every one person that uses X-Fire, there are probably a hundered that don't. I wouldn't put to much stock in what x-fire trends are. Means nothing overall.
As far as the OP goes, good for Turnbine. I thought it would be doom and gloom after a period and I still think it might. Only a matter of time until ithe greed bug hits and more and more of the game shows up in the store and you start seeing game breaking items that can be purchased. I hope I'm wrong, but I guess only time will tell.
I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

I'm sure you have the link where Turbine or Warner Brothers said they had 300k subscribers before F2P, right?

EVE has had it's plex for gametime of isk for items for a while now. CCP just does a better job at masking it. Also it takes nothing away from the game since you could buy plex with In game isk just like we could earn cash shop point I'n game I'n lotro or completely avoid the CS by subbing. Both models are excellent.
I agree with the guy that said the population was too low to play before the F2P. I subbed to this game for a while and it was fantastic except the whole time I played I barely saw anyone else. I'm going to have to give it another try since it seems it might actually be a MMO now.

Honestly before really giving lotro a solid go I felt that way also. It wasn't until recently when I bought my character a mount and started exploring that I realized that lotro is freaking massive and even if the population is healthy on a given server people will be spread out. It's not like wow where players are packed into two main cities giving the illusion of a packed server even when I'n reality it's low pop.
The game was boring to me before the f2p conversion. This translates in mho to nothing has changed other than a shot of mooch f2p population.
Sorry, but that's the truth as I see it. Your mileage may vary.
A good Percentage of that "mooch f2p population" actually use that shop. Hell... I've spent a 100 bucks I'n the shop that's more than your so called non-moochers will spend on a sub I'n the next 6 months.
hahaha i love these obvious posts about how games are doing when they go free to play, its almost like they didnt know every one that used to play would come back and play again when the game is free. i mean how stupid can they be. and there revenue has doubled. ofcourse it has, thats what happens when you restrict content and offer a game store to unlock said content. people rush off to buy it not realiseing it was once all part of their orriginal subs.
as a returning player myself i havnt noticed any restrictions on my account yet, but im assumeing im on some kind of welcome back package to soften the blow.
and who was it that said games developers had the interest of the game at heart and not solely there wallets lol. games are not what they used to be, today they are just revenue generators and really bad looking ones too. lord of the rings will take a definate hit to its enjoyment now its free to play, all games do.

ive played lord of the rings since a year after lanch and it was full then, problem with it now is the expansions, every one is grinding mirk wood and all the new raids and instances. newer players that are restricted to shadows of angmar and mines of moria wont see the rest of us untill they get past the first 2 stages of the game, you have to unlock each area and to do that you have to be a certain level. so yea it will look barron to the new players, the free 2 play conversion has brought an influx of players in but like all free2play games its just a short term novalty that will dry up in a few months. free2play games usually take a huge negative hit in qaulity. and the player base becomes a lesser community.
we are going to end up with all those kids from perfect world international flooding the lotr servers. not good!!
The people that think they will play lotro fully without paying a cent won't last very long. It's incredibly tedious to grind deeds for turbine tokens. I've been playing for a week or so and have earned like 100 points I can't imagine anyone playing and deleting characters over and over again to play for free.
I don't think LOTRO is going to last either. I bought a retail box for a cheap sub + expansion, but I'm sitting at level 36 in a nearly empty zone, no one wants to group, etc. It's very boring.
Monster play is okay, but I'm snubbed for being a 'noob'. No one wants to have me along and show me the ropes, they just want all of the exp for themselves. If I ever do get to max level in PvE I'll have fun stomping in the faces of the elitist monster players.

Monster play is probably the worst mechanic in the game. It's just doesnt fit the more pve centric focus and the players that partake In it are complete twats. This is one game where I will say pvp just doesn't belong the majority of it's playerbase are extremely helpful, warm and inviting nothing like the monsterplay elitists.

It really depends on the population. There was a time when Monster play was a blast. There where defined leaders within the monster community and anytime one of them hopped online and got a party going, everyone else joined in. These where leaders that knew strategy, knew what they where doing, and they knew how to be a good leader and how to get people to listen to them. When one of them came online word spread fast among the community and the action started and boy was it a blast.
It's really all about team work and how good your leader is. If the party leader sucks at being a leader then its going to be a complete flop and a dud. Thats why most AV and WG matchs in World of Warcraft tend to end up being a complete mess. Theres no central leaders and noone that has the know how and wants to be a leader to stand up and take charge of there side. Then you also have the issue of people actually listening to the leader.
This is just one of the reasions why DaoC RvR was a stable back in the day. Defined leaders and people listening instead of trying to be the lone hero on the battlefield.

I think it's a bit early to draw conclusions here. LOTR have been f2p for very little time. I'd be curious to see how he goes in a year or 2.

I am really happy for them. Their business plan is very solid.
Too bad I love EQ2 much more than LOTRO so I would keep playing that even though the business plan is inferior imo.

I'm really surprised and discouraged. I was really hoping players wouldn't be amused by killing pigs, bears and wolves nonstop.
Umm... a lot of the f2p players made more than one account because of the limitations and such, so it`s not as much as they think.
