Classic Mmorpg.com "Blizzard" and "World of Warcraft" hate. That's all any thread connected to those two names ever boils down to.
It's really pathetic.
Also, while I do not have children, anything at all that helps protect children from harm is great in my book. Some real sick people out there.
Edit: You know what else annoys me: If this had been CCP instead of Blizzard, you'd all be screaming how awesome and beautiful they are for doing this for the world. I digress at this point.
Wouldn't take the hate/love personally, thats pretty much what every thread on this forum boils down to. People who love the game will defend the actions the games take, people who hate it will try and tear it down.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
Blizzard.... damned if they do damned if they don't.... if blizzard found the cure for cancer and gave it away free people would still complain or spin it to make blizzard look bad. /sigh
While this is a good thing. I always wonder though whatever a company does this because they really want to or because in this day and age doing charaty is more or less expected from them. Regardless though, it a good thing! :P
Regardless, the reason this was posted is that it brings notice to Web Wise Kids that truly DOES work to keep kids safe online 100% of the time, not simply paying it lip service. The partnership with a company as big as Blizzard can only bring more attention to WWK.
As a junior high teacher, I used Web Wise Kids regularly and the kids really learned something in the process. It doesn't sugar coat the dangers that the Web can present to kids and gives them tools and information to handle things they come across. In addition, there are some of the best tools for parents I've ever seen with resources to access if kids become vicitms of stalkers or worse.
Bottom line is that the attention that Web Wise Kids gets with the partnership is worth it in the long run.
Parents, I urge you to check Web Wise Kids out. You won't be sorry.
I agree that WWK should help the process. We have no doubt that WWK is a great organization with good intentions. Nonetheless, it does little to demonstrate that Blizzard is truly treating the problem seriously.
Please understand that Blizzard could have been a lot more a long time ago. Blizzard's behavior has been just short of criminal regarding the neglect they've shown regarding activities in game. As someone pointed out, they have been making money hand-over-fist, and absolutely should have been hiring more moderators which they could have easily afforded. From my experiences in the 1/2 dozen MMO games I've played pretty extensively, both the WoW forums and in-game chat are hands-down the most brutal of them all. How come the other games don't have this problem (at least not to nearly this extent)? They other game companies spend a fraction of their profits to hire sufficient moderators in game and for the forums.
That said...parents, please check out WWK. Blizzard isn't interested in doing their job, but WWK should go a long way towards supporting your kids.
Regardless of the effectiveness of WWK, if Blizzard themselves can't become active in moderating their chat channels in their own game, they don't deserve any parent's money.
The secondary goal of Web Wise Kids is to create and foster ethical behavior while online. The partnership will help families work together to maintain appropriate relationships with others online and to ensure that kids make wise choices.
Yes please. Teach these kids how to act appropriately online, as well as some adults. Wonder if this will lead to Blizzard making a "home phone call" to the kids parents, telling them about how much filth their kids were spewing in general/trade chat.
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.
Thanks for the lol... Blizzard tried to impose real identity to promote a social network and make more profit then backed off because of outraged reaction and legal risks but telling that "as usual we care for our community and listened to our players". Truth is they knew this would be outrageous but thought they were so smart and their fanbois would even gobble that down.
Protect kids? Sure... Then why with all the insane profit Blizzard is making they never hired moderators for their channels and enforced their own rules? I've been watching a constant abuse of channels for months when I was playing, not only common off-topic discussion and insults which is breaking the ROC but hot topics like drugs, sex, rape, hacking, politics, racism, etc... Basically Blizzard created a nice game and turn a blind eye on what's going on as long as people pay, as if they weren't supposed to watch over peoples' behavior and discussion to ensure the game's quality.
Surelely hiring some GMs would cost them money and shareholders would say it's useless, just let the stupid consumers wallow in the channel mire, and Blizzard barely can't afford it right?
Yeah "Blizzard helping keep kids safe online", it made my day.
Why should it be Blizzards job to babysit people? If you don't want your kids so see inappropriate content use a filter. BTW blizzard puts the filters in there games just for that reason.
That's just the thing. Blizzard knows that their product is far reaching and there is a generation of gamers that grew up with WoW. Six years is enough time to graduate high school, finish college and start a family. So what harm is it that Blizzard has partnered with an organization that gives budding parents a tool to educate their little ones about the vices that exist on the web?
The last generation of parents were clueless about the gaming industry. You don't know how many parents ran to the store to buy little stevie that copy of Condemned because he kept whining about it and they didn't have a clue what they were getting. Or the parent that never thinks twice about allowing a child to have a pc in their room (camera included) without schooling them about how to steer clear of unwanted advances.
None of this crosses any of you posters' minds with you negative remarks because you have no clue how to gauge the just of the problem at hand, but effortlessly contribute to it.

If you're not part of the solution you are part of the problem.
I am glad to see Blizz and WWK teaming up to help some issues and potential issues among kids using the internet.
Regardless of what may have already been done, it means something for a company to do what is being done here.
I swear these forums at times remind me of the very forums you are all bashing (WoW Forums) nothing but negativity.
Im so tired of the other people need to protect my kids crap. When do parents take any responsibility for there kids safety. If u are seeing that kind of stuff like rape talk which i personally have never seen and i play at all hours of the day in chat. Dont let your kids play.
This is a game u have to be an adult to have an account. If u let your kids play fine its up to u as parents to choose what your kids can and cant do . Oh and blizzard is no where near as dangerous to kids as facebook or any of those social networking sites. All of which parents let there kids post all kinds o stuff u should never let your kids put online.
So please i do see politics and religion talk in chat. That said i tend to ignore most of it but im an adult. I let my nephews play but the realms i play on arent to bad for the sexual inuendo and stuff.
Again its up to the parents to protect there kids not blizzard. Im so tired of everyone saying ill let my kid watch or play this but dont take it upon themselves to make sure its appropriate for them Then they find out it may not be and whine about it. They still let there kids watch it but its the tv show or the game companies fault. Grow up raise your own kids people.
Some of the worst offenders in chat are kids themselves. New found freedom for grown up wannabes. Fact is that most grown ups can drop the F bomb in real life and don't have to resort to internet anonymity. Most talk about an imaginary sex life to try to impress others is done by kids.
Blizzard should provide a chat log to parents. That way they can see for themselves the crude comments that little Billy or Sally are making. If kids knew this was available, they might curb some of their nonesense. Unfortunately, a lot of parents would cancel the game once they saw the crap being spewed, ergo no more money coming in. It would not be rocket science to provide this service though.
Sexual predators do exist, and these are the types that kids need to be warned about. This is where WWK would be helpful. This is a start but more needs to be done.
I felt dumber after reading all the blizzard/WoW hatenotes. You haters need to educate yourself first before posting all these hate and guess what? WWK can help! Get your facts straight and give Activision Blizzard a chance to redeem themselves. This is a very good thing for all of the mmo world. First big step IMHO.
WoW chat = comedy gold and not to be taken seriously. Abusers get banned. I've been banned twice for going over the top. Warnings here and there. I learned a few lessons hahah
Blizzard doesn't need to put a moderator in every server and every channel reading everything that is typed in chat 24/7. That's just ridiculous and dumb. In-game reporting, chat filtering, and WoW parental control are there for a reason.

This is rich coming from athe company that just tired to force real id down their customers throats. What a crock.
Anti-establishment mentality much?
