Just installed this today and I have to say it peaks my interest. When they say the tutorial is long they weren't joking, its about 10 miles and glacial in its speed. Well worth doing though for the exp, money and items. You also need to do it as the game itself seems to be pretty deep and has a shed load of detail which would be difficult to learn on the fly.
The only thing making me nervous about this game is the couple of incidents where new players have asked for help or advice and have been met with open hostility. A surprise for me as the nature and the pace of the game would lead you to believe such a rancid pubeless community wouldnt exist. I hope it isn't a sign of unpleasant thing to come. 
Other than that the whole thing is fairly unique and well worth investigating. Its free after all

LOL no. I am saying that some of the players, regardless of age, were behaving like childish jerks XD
You get them in every game to varying degrees, it just surprised me that this game had them from the off. Its not exactly a fast pace game that can be fubar if another player doesnt know what they are doing. Its more Jamaican in its play style.

The tutorial is indeed boring like hell. No doubt about that. Most of it is just long speech and running in the city.
Just read the things you feel interesting. It's more about making easy experience then really show all the tricks in game.
The game is very different from most other games on the market, so it takes a while to get up to speed. Without the tutorial, a lot of people would pick up the game and be completely lost, and quit after half an hour of wandering around unsure of what to do.
Little bit of necro posting here but.... I just started playing this game about 4 days or so ago. I do agree the school quests/tutorial but they are there for your own benifit. This game is actually pretty complex with the way you have to go about naval battle and knowing how to move your sails around to the changing winds, as well as the ridiculously hard to grasp without the tutorial adventure school.
The upside to doing all of the school quests is you learn how to actually play the game so you do not get frustrated and quit and you get a ton of exp/money out of it as well.
